Anquan Boldin the next Moss (1 Viewer)

Anquan Boldin is entrenched as the #3 WR according to reports out of ARI.So far he's shown tremendous hands in training camp, and they want him on the field for big play potential. He doesn't have great WRs ahead of him. He won't draw double teams. Additionally his QB is known for throwing a beautiful long ball. And the offense is supposed to be more aggressive this year...Any thoughts?

 
Right. Having a solid run-game, great #1 WR option, and a good O-line, like Moss had as a rookie, should help Boldin...Uh, wait a second....

 
Santana Moss or Randy Moss? I'm sorry, but had to ask....As for adding something of substance to the discussion (as too many people avoid when trying to be funny):I think Boldin has the potential to be a very good player. He did lack speed AT THE COMBINE ( I think he ran a 4.8 or something silly like that). Maybe he has "game speed". I don't know, as I haven't seen him play a lot live in college or preseason. The coaches also have said that his hands have been fantastic in the preseason so far. However, I do think he lacks the sheer physical abilities that Moss has. Boldin is strong, but Moss just simply takes things to another level when he decides to actually play. It is obvious that Boldin will get the chance to play this year. The question is whether he will emerge as a true stud player just yet. I doubt this happens this year. In a redraft, I'd probably make him a very late pick as my WR5 or WR6. As for a dynasty draft, he is an excellent WR prospect. He has a bunch of things going for him: Blake throws deep well, the depth chart is nowhere near being established yet, and he is a very good player. Bottom line for him in my opinion --- he has A CHANCE to become a very good player, but I doubt he can rise to the level of a top 3-5 WR. A VERY good dynasty league prospect, but don't get too excited in a re-draft format this year.You could certainly do worse than this guy in terms of digging for deep prospects with a lot of upside. That was Jerry Rice's problem too. It also allowed Terrell Owens to be the 10th WR taken in the draft. And Shaun Alexander had terrible 4.58 speed.I like Boldin more then Andre Johnson. :shock: :eek: :shock: :yes:

Has the explosive burst needed to gain separation after the catch … Does not shy away from the crowd, using his hands well to force his way through traffic … Plants and drives sharply on deep routes … Has the lateral agility to shake free of press coverage at the line of scrimmage … Very effective on vertical routes, showing elusive moves to the corner … Can create space with his acceleration and knows how to drive toward the sidelines in clock-management moments … Flashes to the ball with his hands properly extended and never hesitates going over the middle for the ball … Shows the athletic ability to adjust to the ball and take it away from the defender … Has a keen knowledge for moving the chains, knowing how to stay uncovered once the coverage spreads … Displays the speed to find the end zone when he catches the ball in stride.

Comes out of his stance a little slow, showing hesitation before getting into gear a few steps past the line … Not very quick in and out of his cuts …

I'm not sure what to believe because they contradict one another. ;)
 
If he's entrenched as the #3, then, by implication, #1 and #2 are set. The more relevant quesiton is who are the #1 and #2 in AZ?They'll see the field more than Boldin.

Well, if that's your opinion, than how many Seminole games will you be attending this upcoming semester? If you're not using your student tickets, can I have them? Tallahassee is not too long a drive for me.
 
Boldin did run some poor 40 times, but he tore his ACL in college and was said to have 4.4 speed before that happened. There's a chance that his old wheels could come back to him in time. I don't think he'll be another Moss, but he could surprise this season. Even though he lacks speed, he is supposed to be very strong and quick. One magazine I have compares him to Hines Ward and I think that might be a more realistic comparison although Boldin is quite a bit heavier. I have him in my dynasty league and I'm hoping he becomes an exceptional possession receiver like Muhsin Muhammad was not too long ago. He'll certainly get his chance to impress this season.

From what I heard, BJohnson and LFoster, but I ahe to admit I'm not all too familiar with ARI anymore...

Blake will get it downfield but Boldin will be about 15 yards shy of it...I've watched every FSU game for the last 15 years or so; season ticket holder, booster, etc.Even pre-ACL, Boldin's strength wasn't his speed. He's not slow, but definitely not fast. Rather, his best points are his elusiveness and strength. He's a big WR who relies on that and cutting to get YAC than he does on speed. That's why I was so concerned as he came off the injury as he's not a burner but relies on planting and cutting...Edited to add: I'm now concerned about his effectiveness in the NFL, where the LBs and DBs are harder to juke than in college, especially if you don't have the speed to create more separation.I think he can have a nice little NFL career as a possession WR, and can see him being Arizona's #3 WR right off the bat, possibly in perpetuity. The Blogger ran a recent story about McGinnis putting him back to return punts (which he did early at FSU) and possibly taking a few snaps this season (HS QB at Pahokee, he was competing against Rix at QB when he tore his ACL a few years back, showed his arm in this year's Sugar Bowl). He's also a very fiery guy, can show good hands but sometimes has concentration lapses.

Sorry I let you down Yao, never want to disappoint the big guy...I admit not knowing much about Boldin, other than he put up huge numbers in college and has been highly hyped in training camp, and looks to be in a great situation. I'm not saying anyone should rick ANY draftpick on him, but just wait and see, and if he starts to look good, at least keep an eye on him.

Graduated from Villanova 13 years ago. Took Coles in first round of rookie draft (9th pick) a few years ago and was laughed at much the same. Traded him last year for a 2nd and drafted Clinton Portis. Traded Portis this year. Nuts? Nah.
 
I've seen every FSU game w/ Boldin playing and to compare him to Moss is fairly off. When I first saw Boldin as a freshman I knew he had great talent and could perform at the next level. That being said, he had an injury like few have said already. That has slowed him down some and not many know that he really wasn't that built when he came to FSU. While he was hurt and his last year he put on a lot more weight to get more pyhsical since before he was mainly a QB at FSU. While he does have good game speed, he used to have better speed and those things I mentioned slowed him down. He has nowhere close to Moss's speed and the differences between Moss's situation and his are so far apart it's not even close. I personally like Boldin more then B. Johnson in the long run, as IMO he has more potential...not to mention B. Johnson only had one good year and big ten teams are not known for their passing def. As far as the Andre Johnson comparison, I don't see how you even see that. I'm an FSU fan and I admit Andre Johnson is better, has better size and speed. He has imense talent, more then Boldin...though I think both will become pretty good WR's at worst. I just think due to Andre's talent will lead to him being better, faster.

 
You may be nuts, but, I will be looking at hom throughout the pre and regular season.Any hint of Mossizm, and I will grab him.Thanks for the info

 
I like him. I don't think he's Moss but he reminds me a lot of Jimmy Smith. Andre Johnson is big and fast but he didn't look very natural catching a pass most of his career and I think he gets it batted away in the Pros. Soon find out...

Highly hyped in training camp (of all things) and playing in Arizona with all new receivers and a former back-up QB? What's not to love about this guy? Who wouldn't consider him to be the next Moss? :rolleyes: Put down the crack pipe, Switz.
 
Neither talent nor the depth chart will tell us which Arizona WR to pick up first, IMO. I expect Blake to "get comfortable" with one of the top three in practice and preseason. He's the guy who will have value. At least it makes Arizona a team to watch early. :yes:

Think about what you just wrote... he's in the ideal situation.Backup QB who used to be a starter, and wants to succeed, and throws a great deep ball.A team with no set WRs, where ANYONE can get the QBs attention.Like I said, I don't know too much about Boldin, but he definitely is in a situation where he could explode.

Did he mean just this year? I was thinking down the road. I doubt he comes close to Moss' first year but has a nice shot to be very good 2 or 3 from now.

 
Since he's talking about "no set WRs" and "Backup QB who used to be a starter, and wants to succeed, and throws a great deep ball" he must mean this year.

Nah.. just looking for a hidden gem in my dynasty draft...Seems people are pretty split on Moss... err I mean Boldin ;) Isn't he an FSU WR? Don't they usually suck in the NFL? Is that somethig I should consider?
 
I've read he's slow too and injury prone. Remember Bryant Johnson is a first round pick so he's going to be the one getting the "benefit of the doubt"(lack of better phrase) and all when it comes to coaches decisions.Also, Kevin Kasper somehow in this twisted team's offseason became the veteran with sure hands. So all these youngsters drive the coach or Blake nuts, and he's gonna throw Kevin's way a few times. IMO Injury prone and slow is an awful combination.

Actually no one has even mentioned Boldin to me. It's just been from my observations from camp news, and game news. The reaosn I asked is becasue I was looking for positive feedback. At least two people in here added something menaingful. Glad the rest of you guys got a chuckle, but too bad you had nothing meaningful to add.The beauty of these forums is the opportunity to gain knowledge by sharing. Of course the downside is the people who have no knowledge and just heckle.

A. Positive Feedback was meant in the sense that people would provide something useful, not necessarily agreeing with me, but reasons... no misconception on my part, but perhaps the wrong terminology, "useful feedback" would have been better in retrospect (Edited to add: Contextually you should have understood what I meant by positive...)B. I don't use VBD - it's inherently flawed, good tool for when you are at a spot and need to decide bewteen two players, but otherwise useless. In fact often times I find that my "gut" is much better than "VBD" although my projections are pretty accurate.

C. Respond as you wish, but just keep in mind, what you say can benefit this board, or just take up space

"Positive" feedback for switz regarding the ludicrous proposition that Boldin is the next Randy Moss:

Randy Moss:

Moss is 6 foot four inches tall, runs a sub 4.3, and posted the following stats in his rookie year: 69 receptions, 1,313 yards (for a whopping 19.0 ypc), and scored 17 touchdowns to lead the league in WR stats.

Anquan Boldin:

Boldin is 6 foot even, ran a dismal 4.7 at the combine (although got it down to 4.5 in a reported personal workout for scouts), and has yet to post any statistics in the NFL. On top of all this, Boldin had a major knee injury in college which he may, or may not, ever fully recover from.

If you honestly believe Boldin is the next Moss and will post similar rookie stats, you are fully entitled to that opinion and I defend your right to state it. However, I'm also fully entitled to say that it is one of the most (if not the most) ridiculous statement I have ever read on these boards.

 
Don't sweat it switz. Everyone that took Portis in the 3rd round of the rookie draft last year would have gotten the same response if we took him in the 1st. Everybody (98%) follows the cheetsheet and is scared to death to use their gut. That's why every draft starts with the same 6 players taken first and those 6 are never the top scorers. Every year somebody is wrong but at the beginning they know it all.

The #1 WR is Bryan Gilmore. He's the Cards fastest player and had begun replacing David Boston last year but broke his leg mid-season. He's a 3rd year WR with huge upside.With Jeff Blake throwing deep to him, Gilmore is going to put up stats. The oline only gave up 28 sacks last year, despite losing 3 starters to injury.WR1 Bryan GilmoreWR2 Jason McAddleySlot Receiver Anquan Boldin....On Bryant Johnson. The two guys with the best upside are Bryan Gilmore and Anquan Boldin. Kevin Kasper and Jason McAddley will poach some of their carries but Gilmore is the #1 WR and Boldin is the slot WR.Seriously, there are too many WRS in the mix at AZ to predict a big year for any of them.All I can tell you is this, and you know it already. Jeff Blake loves to throw deep and Gilmore is the fastest Cardinal. When Blake looks short to dump off, Anquan Boldin, FB James Hodgins, and WR Larry Foster get the catches.There are NO, zip, zero great AZ fantasy picks but QB Jeff Blake, WR Bryan Gilmore, or WR Anquan Boldin are worth a low round risk. One or more of them will do well.

Looks like Boldin has been moving up and McAddley has been moving down. I really like McAddley's athleticism, though, and he made some beautiful catches last year before he got hurt.
