Anthony Armstrong (1 Viewer)

I'm somewhat intrigued by Anthony Armstrong. My interest is really only because I believe there is some opportunity for a Redskin receiver in addition to Moss/Cooley. New coach... New QB...

I look over the Redskins depth chart: Galloway? Roydell Williams? ugh! Devin Thomas plummeting down the depth chart. Malcolm Kelly IR'ed. Who is this Anthony Armstrong and can he seize the opportunity?

I saw a couple of posters promoting Armstrong as a possible week 1 surprise on another thread. So my interest grows.

There is not a lot of information about him, even in the paid content on FBG. I searched the forums and I did not see any threads dedicated to this guy. Who knows about him? Can you fill me in?

For others interested, I did find some information on this thread. Still seems like Armstrong is a bit of an unknown quantity (to me anyway). I'm interested to hear what others see in him.

Armstrong is at best the 3rd WR option in that offense, and the two best receivers IMHO are not WR's, but are Cooley and Fred Davis. Armstrong is like 5th in line, and I think they'll run a bunch of 2-TE sets limiting his snaps.

He may, may be a guy worth stashing in a deep dynasty league, especially on a taxi squad, but he's not worth rostering in the vast majority of redraft formats and if he emerges this year you'll be able to grab him as a FA. He'll be a feel-good story, but then that's what has me worried about whether I like him because I'm pulling for him versus because he's good.

Who then would you consider is the 2nd WR option? Galloway?Or are you talking about receiving option? Thereby including Cooley/Davis.
Galloway is a starter, so he's the 2nd WR option based on that for now. By the end of the season, I won't be surprised if Galloway and Armstrong are close in receptions. I'd guess Galloway will have more yards and maybe Armstrong will have an extra TD edge on Galloway. But, as Nightly Mistake points out, that will still likely be behind Moss, Cooley, and Davis. And, I'd say Portis probably ends up with more receptions than Armstrong.I think Moss will be in the 60-70 range, Cooley around 60, Davis could be around 40, and Portis between 40 and 50. I'd then put Galloway and Armstrong around 35 receptions and Devin Thomas at 25-30. That leaves about 30 receptions for other RBs and WRs.

Ugh. I just have such a hard time believing the Redskins would really rely on Joey Galloway. The same guy who has looked pretty awful the past couple of years. (It seems like it anyway, maybe the stats don't bear it out).

The stat predictions dgreen laid out seem pretty safe (chalk). But for some reason, my gut says there may be something else. I'm a Broncos fan, and for years I've watched the way Shanahan loves to spring out a surprise new weapon. It's happened over and over at RB (to the chagrin of fantasy owners), but it has also happened at WR. Remember Eddie Royal's first game? I don't know if Armstrong has tools like Royal showed that first game. But I guess that is the point of why I am asking: what does Armstrong have? What kind of receiver is he?

I don't see them relying on Galloway either. People are hesitant to believe in Armstrong due to his pedigree, but from what I watched in the pre-season living in DC but not being a Redskins fan, he easily looked like the 2nd best WR on the team. He runs great routes and catches with his hands. It's true, he may not get enough looks to warrant consideration in redraft, but I think there's a good chance he sticks as a dynasty prospect.

He's not big. He's not fast. He has good hands and apparently runs pretty good routes. Based on limited preseason action, McNabb seems to trust him.
Sounds like Jason Avant. 40 receptions, about 38 of them are clutch. No fantasy relevance.
I was thinking James Thrash would be his peak value if he and McNabb can establish a good connection.ETA: I don't necessarily mean that's his peak value this year, but I can see him hitting 60-800-7 in a season at some point.

I think Galloway and Moss will be most useful to the offense to stretch the field and open up seams for Davis and Cooley, believe it or not. Supposedly Cooley is running shorter crossing routes and Davis is running the classic deeper TE routes upfield. They'll undoubtedly take deep shots to the WR's who are both speedsters but I think this is going to be a TE-oriented passing offense.

Haven't heard much about this guy in a while and am curious if Armstrong could be a decent play down the stretch.

His targets have grown steadily each week for the last 6 weeks. Over the last 4 weeks he is in the top 20 in overall WR targets. Last week he had 10 targets. His yards over the last 4 weeks are also top 20. His downfall are the limited TDs he produces.

His next three games are against TB, DAL & JAX, which are mostly average or above average matchups for WRs. Most importantly, the DAL and JAX games are playoff games and the WR and QB matchup looks great for both Armstrong and McNabb.

The WAS defense has been terrible and will be giving up points which means they will be in catch up mode on offense meaning more opportunities for Armstrong.

Anybody else think this could be a gamble play that pays off? I'll admit that I haven't watched him play much and am basing this off of stat analysis. Any views from homers?
