Gonzalez could very easily be the No. 2 WR for the Colts for the remainder of the season with Harrison still hurt. He's coming off a very good game against a bad Atlanta team last week, finishing with a team-high 6 catches for 105 yards. That was easily his best game of the season. He was pretty nondescript in his other starts, catching more than 1 pass in a start just once (7-71-0 in Week 5 against Tampa Bay).
As a starter in place of Harrison, Gonzalez has had two good games and three poor ones. He's shown the typical inconsistency most rookie WRs display in the NFL. So he's hardly a guarantee to follow in the success of Dwayne Bowe or to a lesser extent Calvin Johnson - who both have been viable fantasy options at times this season (Bowe pretty consistently since becoming a starter). His upcoming schedule is:
Week 13: vs. Jacksonville
Week 14: at Baltimore
Week 15: at Oakland
Week 16: vs. Houston
Week 17: vs. Tennessee
The Colts will be facing three strong rush defenses in the final five games, which should result in plenty of passing. So the matchups ahead look good. He's also in a great situation as far as the offensive talent, system and obviously the QB. The downside is he's only a rookie and it could be argued he's just the third option in the passing game even though he's a starter (behind Wayne and Clark). And the biggest potential obstacle would be a return by Harrison. Even if Harrison returns in limited fashion, it would be enough to knock Gonzalez off the radar in all probability since he'd be reduced to being no better than the No. 4 option in the passing game.
But if Harrison doesn't return until the playoffs, the road ahead looks good on paper for Gonzalez to potentially be a decent WR3 at worst. It's difficult to believe a starting WR in the Colts offense couldn't be of some help if he has some decent talent (and Gonzalez does). So what do the FBGers think about this kid? Anybody gambling on him in larger leagues, thinking he might provide some helpful late-season production?
Thoughts?
