Antonio Cromartie - CB (1st round draft grade) (1 Viewer)

Ok so I've been looking at the 2006 draft class for the CB position. Antonio Cromartie (FSU) has been graded very highly and many scouts think he has the highest upside of any CB prospect in this draft.

But Cromartie didn't play at FSU in 2005 due to a knee injury and basically only started one game in college. He did perform well at the combine and the FSU pro day.

FSU fans, please chime in on this guy. Have you seen him play or practice? Is he deserving of the draft grade? What are your predictions for him?

All you need to know is that he's from FSU. Ever heard of Deion Sanders?

FSU is a machine when it comes to producing stud defensive players.

I don't have much indepth analysis since I'm stuck in the midwest and I'm cursed with only getting games by such teams as Missouri, K-State, and Kansas... :X

First, he played much more than that. IIRC, he started about all of the 2004 season. He led the team in INTs that year (4). FSU's DC, Mickey Andrews, goes 2-3 deep if the players earn PT. Cromartie got playing time the years before getting the starting job.

He's a local Tallahassee kid, high school AA, made his announcement on ESPN - very highly rated recruit.

He's a physical freak, has had some injuries. Played much of 2004 with a sprained knee which he hurt toward the end of the summer, IIRC. Toughed it out to start the opener @ Miami, returned a fumble 61 yards for a TD with the injury. Returned an INT @ Maryland for a TD.

Great size/speed combination. Some FSU fans wondered if he had the hips to play CB but he did well. When healthy he shows great CB agility for his size.

there was a nice write up in the USA Today on him (tuesday edition if you can get your hands on one)

sounds like the type of player that knows hard work is what seperates the good from the excellent

I'm hoping the Chargers take Cromartie at 19, but I'm beginning to wonder if he'll be there.
I think he will be there and would be a great pick for SD. Their other option is OT but if they want to address that first they should try to trade down.

Andre Wadsworth, Jamal Reynolds, Derrick Gibson
Derrick Brooks, Deion Sanders, Peter Boulware, Michael Boulware, Corey Simon, Dexter Jackson (well, he did win a SB MVP).

Thought he had a good year.
Isn't Sea looking to replace him because he is not living up to expectations?
I know he blew a play in the SB, but I thought he was their safety of the future or something.Again, I don't follow Sea much, just threw his bname out there.

I give you the fact that they do have/have had some great players in the NFL (Sam Cowart and LeRoy Butler are a couple of others), but I'd lean more towards calling them a bust producer...at least for those players who grade out as first rounders. 2005: Travis Johnson, DT (16) We'll let him slide...for now.

2001: Jamal Reynolds, DE (10), Derrick Gibson, S (28)

2000: Corey Simon, DT (6)

1998: Andre Wadsworth, DE (3)

1997: Peter Boulware, DE (4) Not sure with him at #4. 70 career sacks, part of a great team D, played well within that scheme.

1995: Devin Bush, S (25), Derrick Brooks, LB (28)

1993: Marvin Jones, LB (4) decent career, more expected from #4

1992: Terrell Buckley, CB (5) expected to be next Deion, bust in most regards, decent career. 7 teams in 14 seasons, 50 career picks

1989: Deion Sanders, CB (5)

I don't know. With your list, that's 2 superstars(sanders and brooks), and around a handful of guys that were solid NFL players out of 11. I'd bet that's around average return. And it's certainly nothing that would make me shy away from Sims, Wimberly, Bunkley and Cromartie in the first this year.

As far as Cromartie, he's got great potential but will likely need a season as a back up or nickleback. He is freakishly fast and fluid for man his size and a very hard worker. He was the best player on the field for either team on either side of the ball for the FSU/Miami game two seasons ago. His injury likely cost the Seminoles at least 2 wins and possibly as many as 4 wins last season.

The FSU guys almost always have great measurables and Cromartie certainly is no excpetion. What does set him apart to a degree is he seems extremely committed to becoming an excellent football player. I have him rated in the top 20 and would love for him to slide to Jacksonville. Many people had him borderline top 5 before the injury and I think 5-10 is a fair position to have projected him before the injury, which he seems well on the way to fully recovering from.

Quite a few very good players in there, and a few Hall of Famers. Not sure what you're looking for exactly, but that's probably as good as it gets. All schools have busts. And Marvin Jones being a bust had a lot more to do with injuries than actual skill.

God it pisses me off that this team could have four first-rounders and they lost five games.

:hot:
I feel ya. When the o-line goes there's not much hope. That could have been a very good football team.

Ever heard of Terrell Buckley?Yes...they produce some solid talent...but they also produce some stinkers.

Forgot to add, too, that after he tore his ACL he didn't sulk. Rather, he became a coach for the young CBs (nearly all of the others were young). During each game he wore a headset. He was a team leader before and after the injury. Has shown very good work ethic and character.

Between the O-line and the horrid quarterbacking... :X Broke my heart this season.

But atleast they beat Miami...man that was an ugly game though.

The defense is what kept them in most games since the running game wasn't even that good. Scary fast defense!

Visited with the Vikings the past day or so. They ran a full physical on him to verify that he is recovered or at least on schedule for full recovery.

Cromartie stood out against Miami a couple seasons ago...guy is sort of like what Randy Moss is to the WR position...pretty freakish combo of size and speed.

Cromartie and Devin Hester from Miami are 2 guys that I will be very interested to see where they lkand. Both could/should have a major impact on whatever they team they go to.

I've bought Coyle's Draft Guide the last 5 years. I can't recall him ever having a bigger chubby than he does for Cromartie.

He says he's the best corner prospect of the past decade and is the best corner he's seen since Deion Sanders. He also rates him as the highest rated Defensive Back in the draft, ahead of Huff.

Hester couldn't even play corner in Miami. He better learn how to play WR if he wants to have any NFL impact.

Yes Coyle was one of the reasons I started this thread. He can't praise Cromartie enough. He rates him in the top 10 prospects and the best corner in the draft.I've never seen the guy play, so I wanted to know if this hype was well-deserved. He does sound like a unique talent.

:goodposting: He wasn't that bad.
7 teams...sort of looks like he was not that good...not to be drafted as high as he was over a guy like Troy Vincent.Though I like that the info was from Chuck Cecil. Now that was a hell of a DB. Coaching down here in TN now for the Titans.

He probably would have been the best player on a really good defense last year...
