Antonio Gates' Renaissance 2014 (1 Viewer)

I couldn't find a recent thread on Gates but it seems he deserves one. Through six weeks, he is the fifth ranked TE in PPR. Most experts ranked him anywhere from 10 to 20, predicting age would roll over him this season and Ladarius Green would take over. So far, it hasn't happened.

How long does he continue at this pace? What is his current, comparative value?

So unappreciated ... He's TE 4 in my league just behind Graham and Thomas.

Every week Olsen and Bennett are ranked ahead of him but he is out scoring both

TE's overall are pretty useless this season

Bennett is TE2, Greg Olsen is TE4 and Gates is TE5 in my ppr league - and Gates hasn't done much in weeks.

Will Gates be back in SD next year?
Yes, unless he wants to retire, which I doubt. They certainly aren't going to cut or trade him.
I read somewhere that Gates will be 35 next summer (oldest TE) and is due $5.9 mil in the last year of contract. Hasn't exactly been a picture of health throughout his career. Green is younger and cheaper and it may be in SD's best interest to part ways with Gates after this season. No idea if that will come to fruition or not but it's plausible. That could mean Sunday is last time Gates takes the home field as a Charger in reg season game. A little extra strength to the argument for starting him this week, IMO.

Reposting from the Ladarius Green thread:

Gates continues to be Rivers' primary TE target, and is second on the team with 77 targets this season. Here is where Gates currently ranks among NFL TEs this season: #6 in targets, #6T in receptions, #8 in receiving yards, #14 in YAC, #3T (with Graham) in TDs, #4 in drop rate (minimum 30 targets). Bottom line: he has been great.

I see people speculating that the Chargers will part ways with Gates after this season. Unless Gates decides to retire this offseason, IMO there is no question he will be back. It may require him to restructure, but, if so, that will happen. IMO he will be back until he decides not to come back or until he proves in an extended period of playing time that he can no longer get it done.

As great as he was the first half of the season, in the past 5 games he has 20/191/0. Can't pay a guy $5.9M for those numbers.

I'm saying Gates will be on the Chargers next season if he wants to be on the Chargers. I'm not saying he will (or will not) be making $5.9M.

For those saying Gates has been playing poorly, context matters.

Matchups, coverage, and game plans are a factor in any short stretch of games, not just the player's performance. Over the last 5 games, the Chargers have played MIA (#1 in FP allowed to TE), STL (#4), BAL (#14), OAK (#19), NE (#22).

Perhaps more importantly, San Diego's pass offense struggled during that stretch, with just 1194 passing yards and 6 passing TDs -- an average of 238 passing yards and 1.2 passing TDs. Compare that to the averages in the first 8 games -- 277 passing yards and 2.5 passing TDs.

Certainly, it's possible that Gates' play declined and that partially caused the offense's poor performance. But I would attribute it more to the Chargers playing a stretch of tough defenses with good pass rushes, while at the same time playing their 4th and 5th centers of the season.

I also don't really follow the logic of anyone who suggests that Gates is playing poorly and as a result will be released, opening up opportunity for Green next season. If that were true -- that Gates was playing poorly enough to be replaced by Green -- then why isn't Green getting more opportunities now?
