Chargers could get creative with TE Gates Written by: Casey Pierce ¦ 5/6/2007 Source: www.chargers.com How do you take a three-time Pro Bowler who has hauled in 32 touchdown passes over the last three years and make him even better? Apparently by finding more things for him to do.

That's what Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner has done with tight end Antonio Gates throughout this weekend's Mini Camp. On Friday, Gates worked exclusively with the wide receivers during the individual period.

"He runs the routes so well. He can run all the wide receiver routes," Turner said. "It's something that we want to incorporate. How much we do of it depends on who we're playing and how they're playing us."

During Saturday's team period, Gates lined up all over the field. He spent time on the line of scrimmage, in the slot and split out wide as the only receiver on his side of the formation.

"It's been challenging but it's been fun," Gates said. "That's what Norv is known best for. When he has weapons, he finds ways to use them and get them the ball. I can't help but be excited about what we're going to do."

Gates has continued to devote himself to getting stronger so that he can be an asset in the run game as well, but through Mini Camp, it's apparent that his role in the passing game could be even greater with Turner's new ideas.

"Every time you can add a wrinkle and do something different, it gives a defense a problem," Turner said. "He's a guy you can really create some mismatches with."

This is also why Gore owners should be selling high.
RBs the year AFTER Turner left town . . .Robert Delpino (1991 Rams) - Ranked #5 fantasy RBEmmitt Smith (1994 Cowboys) - Ranked #1 fantasy RBStephen Davis (2001 Redskins) - Ranked #10 fantasy RBLaDainian Tomlinson (2002 Chargers) - Ranked #3 fantasy RBSammy Morris (2004 Dolphins) - Ranked #35 fantasy RB after RWilliams retiredJustin Fargas (2006 Raiders) - Ranked #44 fantasy RB after LJordan was injuredThat still looks like a decent track record . . . unless you want to blame Turner for Williams retiring and Jordan for getting hurt. (I am aware that Jordan was not doing nearly as well as in 2005.)

Norv Turner was the receivers/tight ends coach for the Rams from 1987 to 1990. Delpino was not the starting running back while he was there. Delpino had 688 rushing yards in 1991, which eclipsed the 567 he had had in the three previous seasons combined. This doesn't seem to be a good example of "Turner using his #1 running back". Stephen Davis was the #10 running back in 2001 under new head coach Marty Schottenheimer. It's a little early to compare Nolan and first time coordinator/former QB coach Jim Hostler to Schottenheimer. Even then, his TDs dropped off significantly. Ricky Williams: If we can't look at the year after Turner left, how about the year before he got there?Ricky Williams 2001 without Norv Turner 1245 yards, 6 TDsRicky Williams 2002 with Norv Turner 1853 yards, 18 TDsJordan is a little trickier. He wasn't a starter until playing with Turner. Still: First nine games in season with Turner: 1039 total yards, 9 TDsFirst nine games in season after Turner: 508 total yards, 2 TDsSo the question is, do you think Frank Gore is Emmitt on the Cowboys? Is he Tomlinson? Or is he just another back who blew up when Turner came to town and then comes back to earth? I feel pretty strongly that it's the latter. I wouldn't be surprised to see Gore have a decent season, but I don't expect him to get 5.4 YPC on over 300 carries again. No way.

Smart money would not bet for a repeat on this anyway, so I have a hard time pinning that on Turner's absence. As for Davis, his yardage actually increased slightly when Turner left, it was his TD total that plunged.I'm not saying that Turner did not impact these guys, but I think that the impact may not be as severe as some people are making it out to be.

any projections for Gates? Anyone think he might go over 1000yds this year?

Ill say 80 1050 10

I think Gates will not outperform what he's done to date. Sure, he could get 1000+ yards (he's done it before) but I don't believe that any TE of Norv's dating back to Novacek in Dallas has gotten 1000 yards or even particularly close to that number. Norv likes to run the ball and pass to his RB and WR's. The TE is important but he's never featured it before in the passing game.

Compare the WR corps of this team to other Turner-led teams. Gates is still the #1 reciving option in SD. While Jackson should improve, they don't exactly have a ton of proven commodities at WR.

They didn't have much at WR in Washington when he was there, and the TE's repeatedly failed to do much. Ditto Miami, and McMichael had only one even remotely studly year in 2004. I agree that Gates is a player in his own league, but I'm just not seeing where this is somehow earth-shattering news. Gates will put up his comfortably TE1 numbers as usual, but in a perfect world a Gates owner would much prefer that Cameron had stayed and maintained the status quo over having Turner foisted upon him.

my league TEs are the same position as WRs. where would rank Gates with the WRs. He has finish around 15th to 17th the past 2 years, with WRs and TEs combined

Yeah, they all sound good this time of year...

It makes sense for Gates to have a better season this year as the team will not be able to lean on Tomlinson as much as they did last season. I expect Gates to be used more during visits to the red zone. I don't see that much of an increase in total receptions during the season though.

 Why? Tomlinson had the same # of touches he's had for the past few seasons, the big difference last year was McNeill's addition at left tackle.

That, plus is there any offensive coach that leans on his primary RB more than Norv Turner?
