Any concerns about Warner? (1 Viewer)

I watched the game on TV and noticed in a lot of replies he was off target a lot and the ball was wobblying like crazy instead of tight spirals. For instance the TD pass to Johnson, it was wobbly and behind him, though it turned out better as it made him spin away from the defender

I know it's just preseason, but Im just saying.

Warner showed last year that he is capable of leading the team. My main worry is his ability to stay on the field. Even the best QBs struggle if they are forced to start in their rookie year and I would downgrade Fitzgerald and Boldin because of Warner's recent record of 27 starts from the last 64. With Leinart being so far behind the learning curve, I would not want to spend a second round pick on a WR that may find himself playing with Navarre as his QB. I think there is enough recent evidence to show that Warner can pass the ball well enough.

I'd worry more about the .94TD/G he's been averaging than him being off-target in the first preseason game.

Great thought and I agree. What people are missing is last year AZ have a capable back-up QB in McKown. Now if Warner goes down I see Offense slowing down. You must factor this into your projections for Fitz and Boldin because history has shown us that Warner will play 16 gams. I have him down for 10 gms this yr....

Any concerns for Warner.... you mean besides him breaking a nail and being inactive for 5 games? The guy is a walking china cabinet...

Warner isn't Warren Moon. Even pre-injuries in STL, he never threw the prettiest ball in the league. It has only gotten worse since the hand injuries. That's not new and not where your concerns about him should lie.

After all his concussions Warner does not have much brain activity anyway, he will be just fine.

Fitz and Boldin weren't terrible without Warner, the Cards threw just as much and both got their catches in.

My concerns about Warner are (1) can he stay healthy? and (2) If the Cards start slowly, will he be replaced?

Warner has not started 16 games in several years. While I do not predict injuries, his past history cannot be ignored.

Also, while I expect the Cards to do well, if they start slowly or are out of playoff contention by week 12 or 13, I can see Denny letting Leinart get a little bit of action - just in time for the fantasy playoffs.

Leinart is the future. He will be the #2 at the beginning of the season IMHO. This does not bode well for Warner over the course of the season UNLESS he stays healthy and the Cardinals win. Historically, theser are two BIG IFS.

Thats with Mccown. This year we have Leinhart, a rookie, who picked up his play book yesterday. Go back and look at the history of rookie QB's in the NFL....

Marginal schtick

..and yet he's still better than McCown IMO. Not that I'd expect big things but cmon, McCown blew.Still I think the AZ offense is more balanced now so expect a serious downturn on the passing stats this year, Warner or no.

Apparently he's the guy who replaced "McKown".

Not really. Last year I was concerned because they had no threat of a running game to take the heat off of Warner being blitzed every down. Edge brings atleast the thought of a running game and I think Warner may throw less passes but end up with more yards and TDs do to efficiencies in the running game. Only time will tell.

If you are counting on Warner to lead you to title then.... you should be worried. If you have a capable backup to replace him if necessary then this is not an issue. I plan on riding Warner's hot streak until he gets hurt. Then I will throw my other alternatives in. He should be in the top 5 QB's in FP/G now if I can get 8 weeks from him I am set.

Exactly. He always threw ducks, accurate ducks but ducks nonetheless. On a per game basis he will be top 5 in the league with a legitimate shot at being #1 (again this is on a per game basis). However the biggest concern is that he hasn't started more than 10 games since 2001, and that is a very big deal and he drops in my ranking significantly because of that.

The durability is obviously a worry but it should be noted that he started 10 games last year and started 9 of 10 in 2004 before being benched in favor of Eli Manning. It was not due to injury. So it might not be quite as bad as we are suggesting.

Any sort of respectable running game should make teams think twice about rushing the QB so much. The Cardinals won't be attempting 670 passes this year.
