Hey people, been a long time since I've been around these parts. But this has historically been the best resource for stuff like this.

Woke up Sunday kinda nauseous but nothing outta the ordinary after a night at the bar. But out of nowhere, I got a sharp pain right next to my belly button. Felt like gas at first. Later in the day I made a couple of bathroom trips that were...explosive. Again though, I chalked it up to a night of drinking.

Monday the pain was still there. Still kinda felt like gas, but it stayed very localized and wasn't going away despite lots of gas being released. It only hurt to the touch, kinda like a bruise. But there was nothing there, no swelling or discoloration. So now I start thinking maybe I have an impacted transverse colon, which has been mentioned here before.

Tuesday the pain was much less and I figured ok maybe it WAS gas and I'll get better. Still wasn't totally normal bowel movements, but at least nothing explosive.

Today the pain was minimal. First trip to the bathroom again not totally normal but nothing too bad. But then I got outta the shower and noticed the exact area of my belly that's been hurting is now suddenly covered by a bruise about the circumference of a ritz cracker (like a regular black and blue, not purple or yellow or anything).

I don't remember hitting it on anything, plus I would imagine bruising would show up much earlier than four days if it came from an impact. Plus with the slight indigestion and the irregular poops, I'm wondering if anybody has insight as to how a bruise would form from something internally. I have a doc appt tomorrow afternoon, but of course I'm impatient...

Sorta - does appendicitis make you bruise? It's on the right side, but it's like directly next to my belly button. I thought appendix was further away
I work in the medical field, but that is not in my area.  I know there's a physician on here, though.

Most of the time the appendix is half-way to two-thirds between the belly button and the point of your hip bone that sticks out on the right side. Appendicitis can start directly behind the belly button and then move down and to the right to that spot (McBurneys Point) after a day or two.

If it feels like a good solid poop would alleviate your pain, but, when you go to the bathroom nothing comes out, that's a common sign of appendicitis.

The only thing I can think of with what you're describing is an incarcerated hernia. But would also expect some swelling and/or protrusion where the bruising is.

I'd strongly consider getting that looked at sooner rather than later. At a minimum an urgent care if not an ER.

I see you've got a doctor's appointment tomorrow. I'd let a trained MD take a look at it, and not try to self-diagnose. You'll probably end up causing yourself more worry than it's worth. Best of luck!

Gonna keep an eye on it the rest of tonight - if the bruise changes color or gets any bigger, I'll head over to the ER

Probably good advice, but what kind of hypochondriac would I be if I did THAT?!?

But a hernia coinciding with bowel issues? Seems a little strange. Definitely agree with going to urgent care or ER if there are anymore changes.

lol, the best kind.

Out of curiosity, does anything make the pain worse? Like eating, or drinking? or is it only tender to touch?

Can you feel a pulse/throbbing in the bruised area?
No, no pulsing or throbbing. Doesn't hurt to eat or drink. I honestly wouldn't have given it a second thought if I hadn't showered earlier and noticed it in the mirror. It's been sore to the touch for days, and I've probably made it worse by pressing on it. Come to think of it, I wonder if I caused the bruise myself by pushing too hard in the spot while trying to find a bump or a hernia or something. Wouldn't that be something

Entirely possible. Good to go see your doc and get confirmation, though. Sucks getting old, but I guess that's what we do now.

Good advice and differential so far. Sounds like Cullen’s sign, which can indicate bleeding within the abdomen. This usually occurs after trauma, but can happen spontaneously if you have an abnormality of bleeding/clotting, or a bleeding organ/mass in your abdomen - spleen is one possibility. A bleeding ulcer or hemorrhagic pancreatitis are also considerations, though I’d expect worse belly pain. Without knowing your medical history, including medication/supplement use, it’s hard to say much more.

But I don’t think this is an internet diagnosis, as it can potentially be something life threatening. Get someone to take you to the ER now. They will examine you, check blood counts and bleeding/clotting tests + probably an abdominal CT.

Good Luck.

Not the best article, but for reference

Cullen and Grey Turner signs indicate internal hemorrhage and warrant careful history-taking and investigations, including coagulation studies, serum lipase and amylase, and imaging. Cullen sign, first described in 1918, is superficial bruising in the subcutaneous fat around the umbilicus.1 It has been described in acute pancreatitis, rectus sheath hematoma, splenic rupture, perforated ulcer, intra-abdominal cancer, and ruptured ectopic pregnancy, and as a complication of anticoagulation.2 Grey Turner sign refers to ecchymosis of the flanks and may occur in conjunction with Cullen sign, especially in patients with retroperitoneal hemorrhage.3

Good advice from xylem.

As I read your first post I also thought of Cullen's sign.  I agree with TX----given some of the very serious potential causes, get it checked out in the ER or urgent care tonight.  Hopefully being overly cautious but not worth the risk. Best of luck.

Thanks for the advice everyone - based on the last few posts, I decided to head over to the ER last night around 11pm. Ended up getting bloodwork and a ct scan which resulted in a diagnosis of...a bruise (sorry for the lack of drama).

They said the scans and bloodwork came back perfect, and I more than likely had a stomach bug and simultaneous bruise that I probably got Saturday night (likely in drunken celebration of the Tar Heels win). I told them I didn't have the bruise until Wednesday. The doc asked if I didn't have the bruise til then, or if I just didn't notice the bruise til then. Not gonna lie, I don't spend a lot of time looking at myself shirtless in the mirror so I realized it's possible it was there earlier in the week and I just missed it.

Anyway thanks y'all. Seems like I'm good to go now.

glad you got it checked out and don't have an untreated hemorrhage in your abdomen.

Thanks for the update. Not gonna lie, I was a little worried about an ectopic pregnancy.

Gently feel around the whole area, pushing in to see if you feel any bulges.  My brother had some issues that sounded the same.

About 15 years ago I went to the ER late at night after self-diagnosing myself with appendicitis.

Walked out with a few pro tips for dealing with constipation.

When I was twenty-two, I checked myself into the ER for the same reason. Next thing you know, I'm hearing about the miracle of Gas-X.
