Any of yall trading or trading for P.Rivers? (1 Viewer)

Rivers walks into a nice situation with Gates LT and McCardell...

If he has the talent as described he could be a nice fantasy starter or have more fantasy value with him taking over the relm.

Also what does this do to Brees value?

Rivers should be fine in SD - the offense is suited to his strengths and weaknesses. I expect him to put up numbers similar to Brees if he is indeed the starter and be in the adequate starter range(10-20).

I am really worried about Brees if he leaves SD. You have A) the shoulder injury B) the learning of a new offense C) a likely drop in the skill players surrounding him and D) the possibility of being in an offense that is not nearly as suited to his game's strengths and weaknesses as SDs.

I traded Gado for Rivers and possibly the Number# Draft pick in 2008

he will be fine, LT will take care of him, Gates, will catch for him, if VJackson comes on strong this season, Rivers should be all he can be in 2 to three years....

Being a Charger fan, I would like Rivers to succeed; so that may bias my analysis. By I do like what I've seen from him so far. He has made some very nice throws in each of the past two preseasons. He played well in his only action in 2005 (had a QB rating over a hundred, although it was only one game). And he handled a very tough situation pretty well against the Broncos in 2006. The Broncos always give the Chargers' offense a lot of problems. Brees hasn't had a good game against them yet that I can remember. Rivers came in when the weather started to get bad, but he was more effective than Brees had been (which isn't saying much, but still).

Everything I've heard from players in interviews is that Rivers looks great in practice. And it's hard to question his leadership ability. He's (I believe) the second leading passer in NCAA history. He played in five bowl games and was the MVP in each one. He has a stronger arm and a quicker release than Brees. He is less mobile and less experienced, however.

Here's a news clip regarding his final game for NC State: 475 yards and 5 TDs.

And here are some highlights from the Senior Bowl:

1. A nice strike to Henderson for 17 yards

2. A short, well placed pass to Henderson

3. Rivers avoids a rush and throwing a short TD to Cedric Cobbs

4. Good decision but Rivers overthrows Alex Smith

5. 21 yard TD strike to Wilford on a post

6. 66 yard strike to Devery Henderson hitting him in stride

7. Slight overthrow on a bomb to Henderson

8. Short scramble after the coverage broke down

9. 5 yard scramble

Worse delivery since Kosar, but he turned out ok. I thought he was overrated when drafted, and I still feel that way. However, I could be wrong, hell, I don't know.

According to some clown ( ;) ) on the union-trib board, Charger OT Roman Oben called in to a local radio show this morning to say that Philip Rivers has been shredding the defense in practice for the last two years, and he'd rather have Rivers than 28 other starting QBs in the league right now. The team is sorry for Drew's injury, but is behind Rivers.

Obviously you wouldn't expect a Charger OL to call in and trash Rivers, so take it for what it's worth. But [playful optimism] Oben is known in NFL circles as a top evaluator of QB talent [/playful optimism].

No guarantee Brees leaves SD. yet.
True, but now SD is no different than any other team wanting to sign him. Why would Brees sign with the Chargers now that they've basically shown him the door. He's 99.9% gone IMO, with the extra .1% being if he doesn't get any other offers.

Still, that's excellent praise and the fact that he actually thought about the other QB's in the league by saying 28 means something.

Rivers' Bowl Game Experience:

Freshman - Named the MVP of the 2000 Micronpc.com Bowl after throwing for 310 yards on a 24-39 passing performance.

Sophomore - Chipped a bone in his big toe in the regular-season finale versus Ohio, his running was limited in December ... Came back to win Offensive MVP honors for the Wolfpack at the Tangerine Bowl, where he passed for 189 yards. (Only Bowl loss).

Junior - MVP of the Gator Bowl, he tallied 228 yards on 23-37 passing and threw for two touchdowns in that contest ... Completed 11 straight passes at one point in the first half

Senior - Closed his career with a remarkable performance against Kansas in the Tangerine Bowl, hitting 37-of-45 passes for a career-high 475 yards, five touchdowns, no interceptions and rushing for 20 yards as well, breaking school bowl game records and Tangerine Bowl records for passing yards, pass completions, TD passes, completion percentage and total offense, earning MVP honors ... Named the MVP of the 2004 Senior Bowl (Jan. 25), leading the South squad to victory with a 12-of-19 passing performance for 219 yards, no interceptions and two TDs in the first quarter plus one series of the fourth.

Rivers was 4-1 in bowl games, including the Senior Bowl, and was the MVP of the game 4 times. His only bowl game loss and non-MVP award was after chipping a bone in his toe as a sophomore. That's a lot of big game performances.

anyone else have strong opinions about brees fantasy future, good, bad, unsure, none of the above?
I think he'll be a decent NFL QB somewhere, but IMO his days of being a top 10 fantasy QB are over. I've thought for awhile that he benefited from the system in SD and having LT to run the ball and stud TE in Gates. If he gets into another ideal system for him he could do well, but I don't see a lot of teams like that who would want him for the money he is asking.

Two things

Bress isnt a UFA Yet. He could still be signed so dont over pay for Rivers yet.

IMO Brees can put up better #'s on a bad team. SD runs the ball alot and has a solid defense. If he goes to a team with a bad Defense he will air it out often. Could be top 5 IMO.
