Any reason why Austin Collie can't take Welker's/Amendola' (1 Viewer)

I preface this buy making the huge assumption that Austin Collie can stay healthy, BUT if he could stay healthy, why couldn't he put up 80% of the numbers Wes Welker did?

The Patriots are in serious need of someone stepping up (their rookie wr's aren't ready yet) and it seems pretty clear at this point that Danny Amendola (a HUGE mistake letting Welker go) isn't going to be that person in 2013. Julian Edelman is little more than a mediocre NFL reciever who has never put up anything, but pedestrian numbers even in the Patriots high powered offense.

Collie on the other hand has proven he can be a huge contributor when he was playing with Peyton Manning and the Colts a few years back. If he can stay healthy, why can't he step in and be what Amendola was supposed to be this season?

Isn't he worth a stash to see how things shake out in NE?

He absolutely is in my mind. There was another thread already discussing this. He came up really big when the pats needed him most to win the game last week. I believe brady said get open its coming to you and he caught it. With all of the drops going around I dont know why there isnt more buzz on him. In addition I believe he is better than edelman.

Well, I agree, especially as the Pats seemed to preemptively pick him up, but:

- Amendola will be back, even at least for a game here and there.

- Dobson is starting to hog snaps and looks.

- Gronk.

- Brady just isn't throwing many scores, that seems to cap all WR's upsides until that changes.

- Did you see Danny go deep vs the Saints? I think that is one reason they got him. I just don't think Collie can do that.

Aside from the concussion concerns that you cite, I don't think he has the burst to get the YAC that Amendola and Welker get.

Vereen is coming.

The odds are against him BW injury history and his newbie role in the team that is now suddenly stacked with targets for Brady.

That said, collie was a STUD before going down with concussions. I believe he was the best fantasy wr for a few weeks with Peyton throwing to him until he went down.

He is just like a welker. Smart player, top notch route runner, sure hands, quick. Cerebral qbs like Peyton and Brady love guys like that.

He can avoid a concussion. Unfortunately that will require some serious luck on his end in avoiding a big hit to the head. You have to feel its only a matter of time with him though. Kind of sucks as he is still an extremely talented player.

If I can play like Jerry Rice, I can start for the Pats. But I cant. And Austin gets nose bleeds in a stiff breeze and loses days when he turns on the microwave. Don't count on him.
