Per Rotoworld:

Jeff Garcia did not show up for his usual press conference Wednesday, and it's believed Brian Griese will start in his place Sunday against Atlanta.

Garcia is struggling with a sprained ankle after overcoming calf and pinkie injuries in the preseason. It appears that Garcia was pushing to start before coach Jon Gruden gave Griese all of the practice reps Wednesday morning. Stay tuned for confirmation.

September 10, 2008, 12:00Buccaneers :: QBBucs QB Griese Taking All First-Team Reps In PracticeEditor, St. Petersburg Times - [Full Article]Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Brian Griese took all of the reps during Wednesday's walkthrough, meaning he likely will start for the Bucs in Sunday's home opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Jeff Garcia, who led the Bucs to the playoffs last season, was not on the field for the walkthrough. Garcia played in the 24-20 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 7. But coach Jon Gruden on Monday called Garcia "questionable'' for the Atlanta game because of a sprained ankle. Garcia battled calf and pinkie injuries during the preseason.

Any truth to what?

That they believe Griese might start but to wait for confirmation?

I'd say that's truthful.

Was being reported yesterday, but I would be paying closer attention to that, since we play them next.

The latest from Pewter Report:

"QB Brian Griese was asked if Jon Gruden told him that he would start this week against Atlanta due to Jeff Garcia's sprained ankle or was it because of the rust factor that Jeff may have had due to the lack of playing time he saw at training camp: “I can’t tell you what percentage of what was going on in Coach’s mind,” Griese said. “You’ll have to ask him that. He kind of explained it to me that it was a combination of a lot of different things.”

Gruden on Garcia: “It’s been a very interesting last few months,” said Gruden. “We had the injury that occurred late last season. We had a prolonged calf injury. I’ve studied everything he’s done. I really believe in this guy as a quarterback. Right now he’s not the same guy he was, and I want him to be that. That’s all I’m going to say until I see the ball thrown with the crisp, accurate velocity and confident swagger. We’re going to let him sit out for a week and hopefully he can get back with us soon.”

The guess here is that if Griese wins on Sunday, it's his starting job to lose this year. More on the behind-the-scenes developments at One Buc Place over the starting QB situation coming later tonight in my SR's Fab 5 column on PewterReport.com. Stay tuned."

Gruden is on bad terms with Garcia after the whole Favre thing. They don't get along, and I don't believe the "injury" angle. Garcia plays through a lot.

They lost on the road to a good Saints team. That gave Griden the excuse he needed to move on to somebody else. He'll put in Garcia if he has to, but if the team is winning without him he'll sit.

Brian Griese-QB- Buccaneers Sep. 10 - 3:24 pm et

Brian Griese will start in Week 2 at Atlanta, Bucs coach Jon Gruden confirmed on Wednesday.

Gruden says there's something "not quite right" with Jeff Garcia (ankle), and he'll get a week to "try to get himself right." However, a big game from Griese could spur Gruden to rethink his QB depth chart and Atlanta provides a nice matchup for Griese to make a move. Garcia's starting job is in great danger.
