Fair & Balanced
Have a chance to go to San Juan for 4 days in December. A buddy of mine does work for a few major hotel chains and got 2 rooms comped with meals at the San Juan Resort & Casino. I just have to pay for the flight and they are pretty reasonable right now. For a couple of days he will be traveling around the island so I will be own my own, I know at the casino I will be content but any advice for beaches, sight seeing around San Juan? It is pretty safe to hit the local towns by yourself?

Tripleta.

Also, there's a guy in Old San Juan who spends all day every day cruising around telling strangers some story about how his dad had a heart attack or his friend was attacked and punched in the face in order to con money from you. If you encounter this individual, laugh and tell him he's famous on the innerwebs. Ask to take a picture with him. He'll vanish into thin air, it's really quite amazing.

Go to the forts. San Cristobal and El Morro. Pretty cool.

Lots of places to watch football and drink beer.

Old Town is popular with the tourists from the cruise ships. It's always seemed safe enough, as long as you aren't flashing cash around. It's mostly shopping, so not really my thing.

The forts mentioned above are historically interesting. El Morro was neat, but doing both would be a bit much. El Morro is right next to Old Town.

For the Bacardi Rum Factory tour, you can take the ferry to get there from Old Town port area. Free samples!

The beaches on the north shore that are east of Old Town and west of downtown are nice too.

A visit to the rainforest would be a good day trip.

On the Northeast corner of the island (Fajardo), they have one of the few bioluminescent lagoons in the world. Maybe an hour drive from San Juan. The kayak trip is worth taking to see it. A moonless or cloudy night is best. There's a guy who serves kebabs and pina coladas for those taking the trip to the lagoon. I'd grab dinner from him there.

Bring sunscreen, it's very strong sun that far south.

I've seen pictures of San Juan and most of them have included people. So the answer to the thread title is "yes".
