Anyone ever build a pergola? (1 Viewer)

In the planning phase of my own DIY pergola. Surely someone here has built their own in the last 8 years?

I'm thinking of putting a very basic/cheap one up over my crappy little patio this summer. It won't even be 10x10. The lady in the condo next door had some guys build one for her a couple of years ago. I don't remember how much they charged her but she got ripped off. The thing was nothing but 2x4s and 4x4s. Nothing was routed or angled. I figured I couldn't do much worse.

Yeah, that's basically my thoughts. I'm fairly handy...and these things are nothing but 4 4X4s, and a bunch of 2X6s. Child's play.

I've done one. Pretty simple really. Are you attaching it to your house or free standing?
Another thing I've debated. Likely will just go free standing. Are there any advantages (structurally speaking) to attaching to the house?

Which way did you go?

Pics of my pergola presently being built

This is a deck over our garage. We added the pergola and replaced the Trex system with Ipe and stone. LMK if you have any questions.

ETA: This is a WIP. Another couple of weeks of work including staining the wood and adding glass at the back.

Very nice

Brick? Where are the ivory pillars? And where is the 24K gold trim?

ETA: will definitely be posting back (and asking questions) as needed.

Obviously this is just practice for the construction workers before they rebuild it with the 24K gold trimmed ivory pillars.

Finished the pergola yesterday. Wanted to complete it all on my own (and outside of hanging the 2x10s, I did), so it took a little longer to finish. Still have some clean up and paver relocation to do (for the grill and patio pub table/stools I built), but the hard part is done. Will also be painting the concrete patio and adding mulch/flowers around the columns in the near future.

Pics

First time I've shared from Google Plus, so hopefully that works.

Very nice job.

Very good work.

Was thinking of doing one myself soon, but the power lines run over the spot I was hoping to use. Guessing the city won't be letting me do that. Gonna have to look into other options.

I built a pergola about 8 years ago. Found the plans online, bought the lumber at a good lumber yard (not that Home Depot crap), and took the time to learn how to make all the angled cuts. Overall it took just two weekends to complete.

It was a complete disaster and one of the worst undertakings of my life. Seriously you should've seen this piece of crap. What an embarrassment.

Thinking of adding a pergola to my patio next spring/summer. I have a 13x24 patio that I just did a couple of weeks ago. What would be a good size pergola? I was thinking of doing a 10x10 to cover the middle part of the patio. How much am I looking at spending and how hard is it do? I'm thinking of having it connect to the house.
