Anyone Ever Eaten DALL Sheep? WTF--I spelled it wrong and shuked a to (1 Viewer)

My friend just got a DALL Sheep in Alaska and was raving about the taste of the meat. He's offered me a couple of steaks. How are they?

Didnt know they made them out of meat. The only kind I've tasted have been stuffed with cotton or feathers and was really dry as a result.

No. We talked about Cecil. He scouted a sheep for 3 hours before deciding it wasn't legal and moving on to another. They have to be 8 years old and they decided the sheep was 7.5. Everything was above board and legal.

If he dropped it with his first shot it's probably pretty tasty.

If it ran a few hundred yards before it dropped it's probably tough as nails.

One shot at 65 yards. He was prepared to shoot 400 yards but it just kept on coming closer.

 
Never have, though I would be interested to do so. What do you have to lose by trying some, presuming you have no moral objections to the hunting of that animal?

I have no objections but I would like an objective opinion as to the taste of the meat from someone who didn't expend a big effort getting the thing.

If someone came in and said they'd tried it and it was amazing, I'd be more likely to press the issue with my friend if he happens to forget.

 
Hunters invariably enjoy the meat they procure more than does anybody else.

I have had bighorn sheep. I found it tough. It made good stew and chili but was not great as steaks or a roast, though it was edible. I have no idea if the two are at all analogous, but an 8 year old animal which lives a hard scrabble existence on bleak artic forage and lichen, and spends its life at altitude on athletically challenging slopes is likely to be ridiculously lean and tough.

 
Not sure how they taste, but when we were in Alaska we were driving down the Seward Highway and stopped at a turnout, where we saw a crowd of people with binoculars staring up the side of a hill. They pointed out these specks barely visible to the naked eye ... not sure how you could shoot one from that far away without a guidance missile.

 
Just take the damn things and try them. As DW noted, it will probably be very lean and tough unless you marinate the hell out of it or chop it up and stew it.

 
My buddy shot a bear one time and insisted that the jerky was the most awesome he ever had. I put a piece in my mouth, chewed for a while and tried my best to swallow it. It was dry, tough and mealy with a very strong, gamey taste. I couldn't even get it down. I waited until he wasn't looking, took it out of my mouth and chucked it in the flower bed. :X Im sure this Dall sheep steak will be better than the bear jerky, but probably not by much.

Bottom line, its wild sheep, not some magical type of meat that's going to be unlike anything you've ever had. It will most likely be edible if prepared right and terrible if not. Enjoy.
