I've had cats and dogs for over 20 years. It's really not something be concerned about. They'll get along fine, especially if you introduce them to each other when they're young.
ETA : as I write this, one of my cats is grooming my dog's ears. I had the cat much earlier than the dog. They'll be fine.

This. I grew up with 2 dogs (big ones at that one was a Great Pyrenees) and four cats, and continually had some combination of both. If they are introduced early, they are family - and in my experience, when they are used to having the other species around, even latter introductions tend to work. It's more an issue with specific personalities rather than a cross-species issue as to how they will get along, imo (though cats tend to be more temperamental - but that can be true and sometimes even moreso by introducing another cat than a dog).
As far as the original post goes, if there are no other pets in the house it should really be a non-issue. If you have no other pets and you bring in a puppy and a kitten, they'll probably become best friends.
We brought a boxer puppy home to 2 adult cats years ago. While I wouldn't say they ever became friends, they tolerated each other mostly because the cats kept their distance from the crazy puppy. We don't have any pets right now and are trying to decide between getting a puppy French Bulldog or rescuing an older boxer. We're also thinking of getting a cat again too. Not sure what order or age but figured it would be fun to get both young and have them grow up together and be friends. Just didn't know if crazy kitten and crazy puppy at the same time make a good mix.
We got an 8 week old dog and cat on the same day many years ago and after about 2 days we weren't sure if we had 2 dogs or 2 cats. They became fast, life long friends, chased each other around, wrestled, slept together etc. Both lived to be a happy, healthy 15 years old.
its fine as others have said. We have a dog and a cat. The dog was a puppy when we also had an older cat. We then introduced a kitten. The older cat has since passed away and the remaining dog and cat get along great. They sometimes sleep together and even play. No problem at all. HTH
