Anyone have a Morgan update? (1 Viewer)

Chaos Commish

I've been following the bizarre handling of Morgan. He was, get this, cleared to exercise last week. That was some concussion. I think this is a situation where Carolina doctors and lawyers are telling Dan it's over, and Dan is telling them to kiss his ####. So, they're bringing him along very very slowly and hoping they don't need him, but being brutal at heart realize they might and he is more than willing. Should it become apparent, say late in the season or in the playoffs, that Dan Morgan can help the Panthers, he'll probably put his hat on and ring his bell again. He could be a very sneaky play that week if you're hurting for an LB. They get a bye in week 9. I won't be surprised if he is back on the field after that.

I don't think anyone does. He started running on Thursday I believe and is now awaiting clearance from the doctors to resume practicing IIRC.

Morgan is done for the season.

Charlotte Observer

Carolina Panthers linebacker Dan Morgan will miss the remainder of the season, Coach John Fox said Wednesday.

Morgan has been out with a concussion since the season opener.

Fox said the decision came after Morgan met with team doctors and other specialists who advised them that it was not in his best interest to play this season.

Fox said Morgan still wants to play next season.

Hey Jene,Once someone has this consussion problem does time away help resolve the underlying issues? My understanding is it doesn't. In other words, shouldn't he just retire?

Yes and no.Once you've had multiple concussions you're much more likely to suffer another, even with fairly minimal impact. And you're less likely to recover as quickly. Some studies suggest that as many as 8% of people who suffer "mild" concussion still have symptoms of post-concussion syndrome one year later. Some of those symptoms can be debilitating. Still, I think most have a full recovery with appropriate precautions.

I haven't followed Morgan's particular case all that closely (severity, timing, etc) other than to note his mulitple concussions, but it certainly sounds like every specialist he's seen has advised him to retire. The Panthers seem to be protecting Morgan from himself more than anything else right now. They've taken away his helmet during games at times (not all that uncommon), held him out extra time, and now they're putting him on IR after he's been clearly to exercise without contact.

He's been out long enough now where there's no appreciable risk of second impact syndrome (sudden death or debilitating injury after getting a second concussion very soon after the first) so there almost has to be some ongoing neurological symptoms on his examination. If that's the case, there's really no timetable for his safe return at this point and the smart thing to do is shut him down indefinitely.
