anyone here into fishing? (2 Viewers)

I have been playing around a LOT with my cousins Humminbird Onix 10SI when we get up to his cabin in Ontario Canada, as well as with the AutoChart program and thought I'd share an image of a Hump we found.

Of all the Maps we have found from others that fish on the river system, as well as searches online, this area shows up as a "flat" bottom area..
It was only by us going through the area to another fishing spot that we "accidentally" saw the bottom come up from 20+ to 9 feet on the depth finder and thought we better investigate it..

Looking at the image below you'll see it was well worth it as the fishing there is "phenomenal" ... we've caught numerous Walleyes, many Northern Pike and even a few Small Mouth bass around this hump. Always fun to find a spot no one else knows about :)

That is a good find!  like that the hump has some different features on it as well.  Another classic structure that I have found to be quite productive is a saddle.  And my autochart has found that in a few lakes and nearly every time it is a good spot.

Hey Jrock,

I rigged my setups with the palomar knot and had no breaks! Caught four Bass, one of them the biggest I've ever caught on my lake, as well as a giant Blue Gill who took his chances with a Rapada flex for some reason. Good day though, lines held and I found a new go to lure (pumpkin green tubes). :fishing: :banned:
Palomar knot is the way to go.  I used to use an improved clinch knot and would have problems from time to time.  Now palomar, and rarely is it my knot that is the problem.

Palomar is solid, but also try loosening your drag.

Leaving Friday with the family for a week stay on Lake of the Woods (Nestor Falls area). Focus will be muskies and walleyes. Will be the first time taking the family along to Canada, 12 yo girl, 10 yo boy.

Confident I can get us action from muskies and pike, mostly confident I can get us on walleyes. Mainly hoping for no auto or boat issues ...

 Nestor Falls is a great area.. We used to go through Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts for some amazing fishing..

When going to the "OnePine" Lake we use to say that if each person only caught 40 Walleyes that day it was a "slow day" ;)

That's pretty cool. My buddy has a Lowrance (came with his boat) that is supposed to be able to do the mapping, but he's never messed with it. Is it difficult? Any tips/suggestions to get started?

Not sure on the Lowerance, but I do know with the Humminbird it took quite a bit to learn the functionality..

Using the "AutoChart" on the device is semi-complicated, but not too bad... here is a link to a doc I created for my cousin to help him through the steps.

The difficult part is taking that data and creating maps/images in the AutoChart program itself..
I spent many hours reading the manual, watching YouTube videos, reading a forum and testing in the program itself before I finally was able to import the data and work with it as needed.
Very Haphazard program put together by Humminbird

One of the best places I found to get hep was the AutoChart Forum
You'll find links to PDF files users created to help walk people the steps necessary to use the program correctly.

Yes indeed.  And make sure to stop your track before powering off your Humminbird unit!  It is very cool software, but not straight forward how to use.  I was hoping the Autochart on the device would be easy, but according to snogger above not as easy as possible.

Edit: I can't get the link to work on your doc snogger.  I don't have a unit that can currently do it at the same time, but am planning on getting one in the next year or so.  Would love to see what you put together.  Thanks!

Just got back from my Wisconsin trip. At the risk of having everyone make fun of me, hooked into these guys:

45" Muskie.

21" Smallie.

4 days of drinking beer on a river = awesomeness.  :banned:
Those are some awesome fish.   :hifive:   The kind I dream of catching in my river.

Just booked my 4-day beer drinking / surf fishing / camping on the beach trip for October. Can't friggin wait.

Thanks, that is great.  They don't make anything easy in this process.  Haha.

You are correct in that they don't make it easy.. But the results are worth it..

We have been spending our time in Canada trying to map out a lake that has no depth maps available. We had heard that there was a 70 Foot depth spot somewhere on the lake.. Last week we found a 85 Foot hole.

Here is a link to the Map we have so far, click the image to zoom in to see the depths :)

Just picked up my first St. Croix Avid. Hoping to get in one last round of fall fishing in a week or two.

With two annual Lake of the Woods - Ontario fishing trips already I've been invited to join a third Canadian fishing trip to Manitoba. Seven and a half days of fishing total: Walleyes and Sauger followed by trophy Lake Trout and Northern Pike on one of three "true blue" lakes in the world, Clearwater Lake, north of Manitoba.

Wife didn't bat an eye and said sure.   Hard to say no because I'm gone quite a bit plus three yearly vacations now with the guys. She's never vetoed before but this time I want to make sure it works ok for the whole family. Pushing way toward the selfish side but you only live once and if she's alright with it I'm going. :fishing:

I feel like a sales rep for AutoChart but dam the thing is impressive..

Made a this video of an island we call "Phenomenal Island", which as you can see we still have some mapping to do.

When I loaded it on the computer I noticed that our "pass by" on the south side of the Island had picked up a Under water reef to the SW that we didn't know was there...

BTW.. this is where I caught that nice 27" Walleye I posted above. :)

If you didn't know, Gander Mountain is closing. They're early into the closing sale. Fishing rods are still only 10% off and tackle is 15% near me. Basically still regular price because the % is off msrp. Percentages will continue to increase.

Yesterday I was doing some yard work when an osprey being chased by a bald eagle dropped a 1.5 lb bass right on my neighbor's roof.  It made a slapping thud, and the birds circled around for a minute.  I walked over and picked up the bass, and was like 20ft from the eagle, as it made one last swoop around.  It was like twice the size of the Osprey.  The fish only had a few scales damaged on his back, so I walked him back to the lake.  It had a little fight left in him as well, so I'm pretty sure it survived.  I have only seen a bald eagle in my neighborhood a handful of times.  Is this an omen?  What does it mean?  Why bother even regular fishing anymore when birds deliver Quez fish?

First Lake of the Woods, Ontario fishing trip this year in the books a few weeks ago. Lots of nice walleyes which is what we fish for exclusively on this trip. Nothing much for size. My trip largest was 22 1/2". Lots of others had 24"-25 1/2". We had our usual two fish fry's plus we each brought home a limit of walleyes plus a bunch of Perch.

Happy to catch my personal best Northern Pike at 38 1/2" on a jig with no leader. Also caught a 36" Pike on the same jig.

https://imgur.com/a/bFdsN

Also caught my personal best Crappie at 15 1/2". It was a monster and they're so fun. The pics just never do it justice. One of the pics is the crappie in the bottom of a 5-gal bucket with the tail going up the side, for size reference.

Two more Canada fishing trips to come. Next up is trophy Lake Trout, Pike and Walleyes. Can't wait.

Getting ready for our annual Alaska fishing trip - this will be our fifth year in a row going. We are switching it up a little bit this year. We usually just go for kings and sockeyes, but we are going to take a day and take a float plane out to fish for silvers (coho). They are supposed to be awesome fighters, so we are looking forward to it.

Last year was the first year that the limits on sockeye were 6 per day (it's usually 3), so we came back with a LOT of fish. Hoping for the same this year. :fingerscrossed:

Those are some great fish. Just got back from our annual Minnesota trip. Caught a 21" largemouth. Biggest pike I got was 31.5" this year. Usually in the 35-36" range.

Going to hit Wisconsin in August for my annual muskie/smallie/sturgeon trip. Caught a 45" muskie last year, which was my personal best.

Rainbow

Brown

caught several the size of that brown...rainbow was skinny but about 19" when laid out against my fishing rod.

Tuoically been more in the 8-10" range.  Probably caught 10 or so on that range and 10 or so in the 12-15" range.

that 19" was the biggest that I've caught in that river (Caney Fork).  I knew when I had it hooked...that sucker pulled way different than most I've caught there.

Nice fish

What part of the lake were you fishing?

Went out fishing at my local lake after work for a quick attempt at a trout or two.  They shut the gates to the access road at 9:00PM so I decided to start packing up at 8:45 and one of my rods goes off.  Felt like a massive fish, almost like reeling in a sack of potatoes, but I was on an ultra-light rod with 2lb test so I was being careful with my drag.  Finally managed to get it near the dock and found out it was a catfish.  After a good fight I managed to net it which was also a challenge since I was alone.  The catfish was 20".  At this point I was nervous that I was going to get locked in and ticketed by the rangers so I quickly start reeling in my second rod and WHAM, fish on!  After a long battle, I find out that this is an even bigger catfish and I am on the same ultra light setup.  I managed to keep him from diving under the dock and got the net partially on him and he jumped up and flopped over the net, snapping my line.

Got out of the park with the ranger waiting and said he saw the fish hit as I was packing up so he bent the rules for me which was cool.  I have only landed one catfish before this, and it was when i was fishing for striped bass, so I was fully prepared.  This was insane fighting fish like that on the tackle I was using.  Fun evening.

Come on down to FL, we've got all the effing catfish you can handle!  I'll throw in some stingrays for good measure.

We've got them here too, I just never target them.  I was fishing for trout with powerbait on ultra light gear in this instance.

Yeah...big fish on the ultralights are fun.

Landed a decent bass on my ultralight at my family's cottage in Wisconsin.  More fun was a smaller fish near the shore on an ice fishing rod a few years ago  Used to catching bluegill and perch around the shore and dock.  A few bass sneak into the weeds sometimes just up the shore.

let my son real that one in

Bass, how low can you go...

Thanks. Canadian side of Lake of the Woods, near Morson, Ontario. Weather was darn near perfect in the 70's and low 80's some with virtually no rain on a 5 day trip. No bugs either. Glorious.
Sounds like a great week! I love the Woods - one of my favorite places on earth. I've spent 9 weeks up there, with my next week coming at the end of July. I've fished out of Nestor Falls a bunch (Sabaskong Bay), Kenora a few times, and the NW Angle once. 99% musky fishing, except the week that was a family vacation, which was a multi-species endeavor.

THIS will be the year I get my first 50 incher ... calling my shot now!

Love, love love musky fishing.

When I go to Wisconsin in August, we drift the Wisconsin river for a day. We put in about 8:30 in the morning and don't pull the boat in until after dark. We bring about 8 dozen nightcrawlers and will anchor up in different pools on the way down.

So while anchored we jig the bottoms of the pools and catch smallies. We will also catch suckers, and our goal is to always catch about a 10" sucker. We usually catch one by 9:30. We'll rig that guy up under a bobber and let him swim around all day until a muskie decides to hit it.. Nothing like drinking beer, totally chilling when all of a sudden you hear that drag start to pull once the sucker is being chased.

Followed by about 5 minutes of pure chaos.

We also throw a muskie lure around a couple of times all day, but that actually takes work.  :fishing:

been fishing Sakawea(sp?) lake(New Town ND area) every weekend for 4 weeks.  Never seen fishing so good.  Targeting walleye trolling with crankbaits in 10 ft of water.  Limit of 5 walleye per person per day.  Limiting out in two hours pretty  much every time out.   Average size is 2 lbs to 4 lbs.  Did catch an 8 1/2 lb one though.  Fishing in an 17 1/2 ft Warrior fiberglass boat with 90 hp 4 stroke.  Occasional Northern pike up to 18 lbs.  They are hell on fishing equipment.  bent hooks, tangled in the net, etc.

I have enough fish in the freezer so now just catch & release.  Walleye is one of the best eating fish.  White flaky meat.  Bread the fillets, throw in frying pan w/ a little butter & oil.  About 3 minutes on each side.  Lemon pepper.   Almost better than candy.

Tight lines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 10yr old is really taking to fishing and has fallen in love with kayaking. Any thoughts/tips on fishing kayaks?  I'm clueless on them.

Like with anything you get what you pay for.  A $250 kayak will get you out on the water but it will not be as maneuverable, stable, fast or comfortable as a more expensive boat.

With that said a 10 year old won't know the difference so going cheap is probably the way to go as you don't know how long he will remain interested.  If you are more serious look for paddle stores that are have demo days where you get to take the boats out on the water and try them out.

Generally speaking the longer the kayak the better it tracks(keeps going straight) and faster it will be.  The wider kayak is more stable(wont flip) but you lose some speed.  I prefer the sit on top rather than the sit in's.

I have a Wilderness System Ride 135 and just bought a Tarpon 100 on craiglist for my kids.  WS are great kayaks but they are not cheap.  It is a blast to take the kids out on the river for a morning of paddling, fishing and being out in nature.

Thanks for the info!  We are only looking for fresh water.

I recent bought a Hobie pro angler. Expensive, but awesome. A mirage drive makes fishing out of a kayak a lot easier.

So i have come to the conclusion I like the concept of fishing more than the act of fishing.

Last weekend I take my wife and two daughters (now 12 and 17) to a large reservoir near us. Tahoe is packed to the gills with gear, We get to the first spot and the lake is down, so tons of weeds. Move on to the next spot, wow, looks perfect. Carry all the gear down about 1/2 mile. Cast my youngest out and as I am setting my other daughter's up with bait, my 12 year old already has her line stuck on something. Okay, cast the 17 year old out. Go look at the other line, yep, stuck and now she broke the line. Start setting her up a new rig, but before I can cast it, yep, you guessed it, the other line is now stuck on something and I had to cut the line. Get the 12 year old back out, but now her reel has a problem and won't get much distance on the cast--so I tell her just leave it where it is and stop reeling it in. Get the 17 year set up and back out. i can now see my 12 year old's baited hook sitting two feet from the shore (I told you not to reel in, DARN IT). Get her re-baited and back out WHEN "Ah dad (17 year old) my line is stuck again  :wall: "

I sat calmly in my chair to compose myself and then politely said, "We are leaving"

So my fishing day concluded at 8:30 am with zero fish caught, 5 line set ups lost and I never got to cast my line out one time.
