Anyone into crosswords? (1 Viewer)

I know there is a massive Wordle thread, but is there anyone here into crosswords? I got an online New York Times subscription a little over a year ago and very quickly got addicted to the NYT crossword. Mondays are always the easiest with Saturdays being the hardest. Sundays are medium difficulty but they are also larger grid. Also, Monday through Thursday are themed in some way. When I first started with NYT, I could only do Monday and Tuesdays and the later in the week puzzles were basically impossible for me. Now that I've been doing them over a year, I can eventually solve most puzzles with no assistance although I do occasionally have do a word check from my iPhone app to see if I've made a mistake somewhere. As of today, I'm on my longest streak ever of 25 perfect days with no checks and not looking up any answers.

The other crossword I do religiously is the printed one in our Indianapolis Star Sunday edition, which I think is also found in places online titled as "Premier Crossword". These are always themed as well and are often created by Frank Longo. You can usually find that one online at https://dailycrosswordlinks.com/ which is great site if you're looking for crosswords.

That said, any other crossword fans out there? Any other crosswords you'd recommend beyond New York Times and Premier?

I do the nyt during the week. Mon - Wed is easy for me even though I only 100% complete the puzzle 4/5 times. Thursdays and Fridays are very rarely. Thurs seems tougher than Fri.

25 in a row is very impressive. I couldn't even do 25 Mon's in a row.

the jumble was never hard but since playing wordle it's crazy how easy it is now.

Any news on Will Shortz's condition? I don't think he's edited a NYT crossword in a few months, since he had a stroke earlier this year. Haven't heard much on how he's doing but Joel F still has the reigns.

Haven't done one in years. I used to love pre-COVID when traveled (flew) for work all the time, I'd grab a USA today in the hotel and do the crossword every day. I've flown maybe 3 times in the last 4 years, and the website only lets you do two free puzzles per week I think.

been doing crossword puzzles since i was a young kid. big fan.

nowadays it's through the Shortyz crossword app which pops 3-4 puzzles per day from USA Today, Newsday, WSJ and the NYT among others.

I have a buddy who sits at our dive bar and does the NYT ones a few times a week. I'll help him out from time to time if I'm there. That's the only exposure to the NYT one I get.

I have a crossword puzzle game on my phone that throws 3 fairly smaller/easier ones at you every day. I do them maybe 3-4 times a week and always finish 'em.

Do it ingonito/private mode and you can do them everyday.

Thursday is a **** half the time. Thats probably the one that I most frequently don’t finish. Do the NYT pretty much every day.

I am interested in other good sources of crosswords as I sometimes want to bail on the NYT sub. I used to work in the Sunday one for like a week when I started several years ago. Still really look doing it by hand when I can. Now I can do the Sunday in less than an hour usually. Friday and Saturday maybe average like 30-45 minutes.

I do some on Sporcle. Big fan of the diagramless crosswords. One particular user makes a new one every week.

Regarding the NYT sub, I first subscribed a little over a year ago when they were doing a special to get NYT All Access for $50 for the year. When you consider that includes The Athletic, NYT Games, NYT Cooking, plus all the news stuff, it was a no brainer. When my subscription was up a month or so ago, it was slated to raise back up to its regular price of $30/month which I'd never pay. I just called the day it was going to renew and said I wanted to cancel and they offered me $5/month if I stayed so of course I did. I do the exact same thing with my annual Sirius XM radio subscription - just call to cancel and say "but I'll stay if you can offer me the promo rate again" and seems to always work, knock on wood.

Used to love doing them with my grandma. Grandpa ran his own washer/dryer repair business and she did the scheduling from home, so if I was ever too sick for school I got dropped off there. I would look up obscure answers in her tattered old crossword dictionary and dunk cookies in her coffee when she wasn’t looking.

In college, my work study was in the mail room and we’d work one out of an undeliverable newspaper all the time. That usually went some thing like this:
Co-worker: “What’s a 4 letter word for a creek or stream that ends in an ‘l’?
Me: Rill.
Co-worker: Quit making **** up. No way that’s a word. (does another clue tag at confirms my answer). WTF is a rill?!? How do you even know that?
Me:Even my grandma knows what a rill is, you loser.

Some of those NYT’s ones are HARD though…

I use a crossword app from Redstone games. Several authors, difficulty levels and sizes to filter (15x15 is the biggest) and hundreds archived. Skip the $20 ad free version. I usually only get an ad after finishing a puzzle and it's the "5 seconds" and close type.

Yeah I have done that sometimes. Or I just cancel the physical Sunday delivery for a while (even though I do miss the magazine) and get the credit for that.

I used to like the ones in TV Guide or their knockoff versions in the Sunday papers.

4 letter word for tv sheriff seemed to be in every 2nd one: L _ _ _
