Anyone notice that the Draft starts at 4 PM ET (1 Viewer)

Yeah, I'm gonna TiVO it and just wait about 2 hours (6pm) before even starting the sit-down. Either way, ugh. Keep in mind that the "first day" is now just round 1 and 2, right?

this kills it for me... Thats right around dinner time for those of us who are family bound.

Thanks NFL, the wife is going to love this.... I think their going to lose viewers than gain

They are setting it up for the move to Friday night.

I think the plan is for 2010 to have Rd 1on Friday night in Prime Time and dragging the whole thing to 3 days.

For the benefit of NFL Network of course

I agree that the start time is late.

What I have been wondering for years now is why does the 1st team get to sit on the clock for the 15 (and now 10) minutes after the draft starts? They have been on the clock all offseason. Why not just start the draft by saying "With the 1st pick of the draft, the Detroit Lions select _____." And then team 2 is on the clock. [/rant]

Didnt know this :( The wife got us concert tickets for this night so I may be missing a good majority of the draft. :hot:
their going to lose a lot of people w/ this... Noon-time was perfect
This is how it was last year already.- 3pm EST/2pm CST start- only first 2 rounds shown on Saturday- Time limit of first round reduced from 15 mins. to 10 mins. per pick (and of course not every team will use their entire time alloted)

I think it may be better for viewership. Saturday early afternoons are also family times filled with youth sporting events, yardwork and running errands. Personally I like the later starting time.

I believe it might be 7 minutes per pick this year. During the Network piece on the Seattle warroom they mentioned trading down the one guy said remember it is only 7 minutes per pick and we will be picking in about 20 minutes. Need to have stuff in place early.

Speak for yourself. For west coasters, waking up at 8am on a saturday morning to start my trek to a draft party is ####### rough. With a broadcast starting at 9am they probably got very little ratings from the west coast besides the hardcore fans.

The 1pm start is infinitely better than 9am.

West Coast For Life.

They only do 2 rounds Saturday then fly all day Sunday. It worked out pretty well this way last year. They used to start ealier and do 3 rounds Saturday but they moved it back last year and only did 2. It was done pretty early last year on Saturday night then we have to listen to all the blah blah BS commentary forever! I prefer 3-4 like old days!

Bout time the east coast guys had to suffer some.

Love the 8:30 MST Playoff start times and now this draft time. !!

This is the first I've heard about it starting at 4pm EST this year (last year it was 3pm EST). I did a quick search and the story below says that indeed it was pushed back another hour and starting at 4pm EST this year. Can anybody confirm this?

NFL Draft start time pushed back.

If the current trend holds up, the NFL Draft will start in prime time in the near future.

The 2009 NFL Draft is currently scheduled to begin a 4:00 PM ET on Saturday, April 25, an hour later than last year. This marks the second straight year the start time for the event has been pushed later in the day. Last year's NFL Draft started at 3:00 PM ET.

In previous years, the NFL Draft began at Noon ET.

ESPN's first round coverage of the NFL Draft is currently set to air from 4-9 PM ET on Saturday, April 25, with second round coverage slated for 10 AM-6 PM on Sunday, April 25.

I think they pushed it back from noon in previous years to 1 pm last year, and now 4. It did not start this late last year.

Let's stay positive -- the draft is in four days -- in fact, four days from this post we'll know the first five picks!

I know for a fact it started at 3pm ET/2pm CT last year.Looks like they just moved it back 1 hour this year.

I think they were saying that the average pick took only 7 minutes so they would be picking approximately 20 minutes after the draft started.

For what it's worth, ESPN's online TV guide only has draft coverage running till 11PM, 4 - 9 on the main channel, and then switching over to ESPN2 at 9 for 2 more hours.

For real. East Coaster complaining that Day 1 may end at 11 pm is a joke. Guess you'll have to have your glass of warm milk a little bit later, fellas. Don't forget to take your teeth out!!

Considering the West Coast has to get up at 7am on Sunday to see round 3, I don't think the new time is too bad.

RIGHT...cause Monday nite games ending after 1am doesnt suck...
Monday night football games on ESPN start at 8:30pm EST. As far as i remember no monday night football games are going on for 4 and a half hours.

I don't mind the later start. Gives me time to get real life stuff done and then park my #### on the couch around 2 and watch the predraft stuff as my buddies arrive.

I think the NFL (and ESPN and whoever else is behind this decision) misunderstands the appeal of the NFL Draft as a television event. Much of its appeal is that it can be watched on a lazy Saturday afternoon. It's not something you plan an evening around. Half the time, especially on day two, it's just background noise anyway. The draft is NOT made for prime time viewing. It's made for vegging out on the coach for six hours.

They can't ask west coast people to start watching before 1PM. They need time to sober up.

I thought it was going to start friday nights this year and then start the 2nd round saturday morning.

This is a horrible move by the league. Ive read some about this and they are horribly overlapping with biesball games starting off at 4pm. Do they really think they are going to increase viewership that way?

Also mentioned was that the west coast teams could be finishing up around 11pm PST and having to start the next round at 9am PST. Talk about no time to prepare! How on earth they would allow this is beyond me.

Friday night primetime would be better than this. However, 1pm Sat seems like the most logical. Finishing up just after dinner EST gives the evening sports (and local shows) ample time to discuss picks so far, how their teams draft is going, etc. Starting at 4pm, who on earth is going to stay up after the draft to read, discuss, and watch?

Really a dumb move on the NFLs part. After this draft, no chance they do another 4pm Sat.

It used to go from Noon until 10PM or 11PM every Saturday. There was no time for people to stay up and discuss anything. Last year ended earlier on Saturday because they moved Round three to Sunday and reduced the time per pick. Running from Noon - 7PM might be better than 4PM - 11PM but there has never been an established market for discussion of picks after day one so no one knows how much that would work anyway. There is plenty of "filler" time during the seven hour broadcast to discuss the picks anyway and who the best players still available are. Guess I don't really see the big deal in starting at 4PM or noon.

How on earth do you get to 11 PM PST? They start at 1 pm PST (4 EST).So how does 2 rounds take 10 hours? :goodposting:

Yeah messed up my card game. I guess I could still start at 12 but still I liked the whole afternoon thing
