Anyone taking a look at Chris Simms? (1 Viewer)

I remember back in 2004-2006 he was always on the brink of earning a starting job, but kept getting passed over for guys like Brian Griese and Jeff Garcia. Then, obviously, the spleen incident happened, and he's been trying to get a foothold back in the NFL ever since. He's apparently found it as the backup in Denver.

Beyond his story and looking at his stats, I don't know a lot about the guy - haven't watched him play much. He did manage a 61% completion % during his longest stretch starting after Griese went down in 05 (I think it was 05 anyway), but his YPA wasn't very impressive, and he seems to have trouble with turnovers.

But, here's what else we know:

- He was signed to a 2 year, $6 million contract - probably not too much more than your run of the mill journeyman backup QB, but not bad for a guy that hasn't seen the field in a few years (he was released from the Titans last year to make room for a punter for crying out loud).

- His contract includes incentives that could bump the value of the contract to $9 million - maybe I'm wrong, but this seems pretty unusual for backup QB's, and even moreso when you have a franchise QB atop the depth chart.

- McDaniels is not sold on Cutler as a stud quarterback.

- McDaniels must see something in Simms. Obviously McDaniels hasn't done anything on his own yet, it's not like his resume is so impressive that if he likes a guy we should all run out and grab him, but this is the guy who was heavily involved in the process that developed Tom Brady and Matt Cassel. His capacity included time as the QB coach and, of course, the offensive coordinator for the record-breaking 2007 campaign, and the surprising sason that Matt Cassel put up. I think that's worth something.

- Obviously, the rift between Cutler and the organization seems to be growing bigger by the day, and McDaniels is clearly the guy responsible for the rift, and doesn't seem to be in a rush to close it.

- Another obvious one, but, if Cutler does get traded, whoever ends up under center in Denver is taking the reigns of an explosive offense and would definitely blow up in value on the fantasy scene.

A lot of people here are taking about a trade, most of those discussions have the Broncos getting a QB back, and certainly for good reason...but you know, just throwing it out there. :lmao:

I have never, ever been even the slightest bit impressed by Simms at any level. Even if I were told right now that he were the starting QB in Denver I would have little interest in him. He just is not a good player and situation can only take you so far.

Just my opinion, of course.

a few days ago, I got him as a throw in while acquiring a late 1st for Garrard. Was planning on cutting him, but he may actually have some value now...

we'll see what happens with Marshall

Picked him up a week ago in a start two QB league. There's enough potential upside to make the play. Let the situation play out and drop him for a draft pick when the time comes . . .

Only thing I remember about Sims is that he had alot of balls batted down by linemen. Also, Before the spleen thing it did look like he was understanding how to manage the game.

I wouldn't call Denver's offense explosive, without Cutler.

He certainly has compelling sleeper value in redraft leagues in the event Cutler is traded. Simms' had long been a divisive player as seemingly many NFL pundits salivate over his physical skill set and winning pedigree, while his detractors point to his health issues and trouble winning consistently or earning the respect of Jon Gruden. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Simms succeed in a new scheme under the right coaching. But I also think it's a high risk proposition that would warrant considering Simms only as a late game fantasy backup option.

If his last name wasn't Simms, nobody would really be talking about him.
I certainly don't care what his last name is - I just think it's an interesting situation given that we are getting a glimpse into what McD thinks of his QB situation, and him really treating Cutler like a whiney tool is an interesting contrast to giving Simms, who hasn't done anything in years, a relatively lucrative contract with incentives.Again though, I don't know much about him beyond this - what his strengths/weaknesses as a player are, etc. Just thought it was worth a discussion.

:( And remember, McDork is going to do all he can to New Englandize this offense. With Marshall probably getting shelved for 4 plus games, that leaves Royal as the only deep threat (and he will more than likely draw the double team). McDork has already hinted that Sheffler is not in the cards for the team, so there ends the stretching the field with the TE. So I am guessing you are going to see alot more dinks and dunks across the middle. I have not heard what the plan is for the offensive line, but if they get away from the Gibbs style blocking scheme, then that also will spell the end of the 1000 yard rusher in Denver. This whole thing just makes me :X As I have said before, if Cutler is traded, this will begin a 4-5 year run of dark times in Denver-especially considering the looming labor problems.

LOL..yeah, from 2 voters, and your third voter (me) gave it 1 star. But my point was that he's nothing special at all, and this thread wouldn't exist if his last name wasn't Simms.

I'm probably in the minority, but I thought he showed flashes of potential while playing in Tampa. With our current QB situation I wouldn't mind seeing him get a second shot here. I think the people that are writing him off are doing so prematurely imo. He's shown heart (playing with a ruptured spleen) and has displayed the ability to throw an accurate deep ball. His main problem is batted balls at the line of scrimmage. And I don't think that is something that couldn't be corrected.
