I think both Smith and Charles are worth a roll of the dice for a couple of reasons.
1. Carl Peterson has said that LJ will not see the field in the foreseeable future which to me means at least a month into the future.

Will Chiefs’ Johnson play again this season?

When the Chiefs returned to work Wednesday, running back Larry Johnson practiced with Kansas City’s scout team. It was the latest signal that Kansas City has no plans of putting him back on the football field anytime soon.
Earlier in the week, Chiefs president Carl Peterson released a statement that revealed that Kansas City has no plans to play Johnson Sunday or probably anytime soon.
“The case with Larry Johnson has been and continues to be in the hands of the NFL office in New York. We will defer further comment on the matter until that process has run its due course and the league has concluded its own independent investigation.
“As we have previously indicated, it is in the best interest of both Larry and the Chiefs that Larry focuses his attention on addressing his personal issues. At present, we do not believe Larry can contribute to our team on the field until those issues are resolved.”
Johnson still might play again this season. But it will not be before he can get his mind and focus squarely on football. Right now, the Chiefs feel like that is to difficult to do.
2. Herm has made a change to the spread offense starting with this last game vs NYJ. This gives the opportunity for different results than KC has been able to show from any position so far. Smith and Charles are both more likely to catch passes out of the backfield than the way that LJ was used.

Conclusion: Smith and Charles are potentially worth something now. Charles was effective running and receiving in the NYJ game but Smith was only effective receiving as he was 11 for 15 yrds rushing in the game. If Smith gets all the touches he could put up similar numbers to Charles but I'd rather have a healthy Charles who was injured with a high ankle sprain in the game. The schedule is good with the exception of weeks 9 and 16. I'll pick up Smith now in my deep leagues and keep an eye on Charles for when he's healthy.
