Are people drafting differently than years past? (1 Viewer)

Why Me?

Nigel
I just looked back at last year's draft in the no ppr league w/ 4 pt passing TDs I'm drafting in tomorrow night. Solid 12 team league of guys who have been doing it for a while. Last year the first 10 picks were RBs, then 15 of the first 17, and 19 of the first 24. It's been like this for years. Picking in the 11 spot I'd love to see this happen again, then take either Brady and a top 3 WR, or two of the top 3 WRs, then get value RBs in 3rd and 4th.

I'd appreciate hearing how many RBs are going in the first two rounds of your drafts this year compared to last.

That's a little RB heavy IME. My draft, the first 2 rounds look the same to me. Mostly RBs, with the elite WRs going in the first 2 rounds. Top 2 QBs go in the first 2 rounds too. More WRs and QBs went in the first 5 rounds than the past few years, but thats just good drafting.

I am in a league just like this, but from the 11 spot you need to definitely get 1 RB or you will be screwed IMO (since the rest of your league will draft RB heavy until you see the RBs again at the end of round 3). I would probably go RB and stud WR with your first 2 picks (unless Brady is there). Then maybe load up on 2 pretty good WRs with your next 2 picks.

I hear you, but I think guys will be reaching to fill their two RB slots while I might be able to wait and still get a couple of guys like Turner, Graham, Edge at 3.11 and 4.2. With two of Moss, Owens, Wayne already in the fold I'd be okay with this.

In my 16 team redraft this past Saturday, I had the 1.2 and 2.15 picks, so I looked back to last year to see what happened in the first 30 picks. Last year, 22 RBs were taken in the first 30 picks. This year, it was only 16, which was a surprise, and a pretty big difference.

Experienced 12 team RB heavy league. PPR even.

20 of first 28 picks were RB.

I picked 9th, took Moss in the 2nd and ended up with Graham as RB2.

I've gone into my first two (of 3) drafts this year fully expecting to go RB-WR in the first two rounds, and have ended up going RB-RB in both, because I couldn't pass up the 2nd round value. In the first (12 team league), Marshawn Lynch fell to 2.03, where I took him (after Larry Johnson at 1.10). In the second (10 teams) I had LT as a keeper at the 5th pick, and LJ slid to me at 2.06.

The common thread has been that the guys at the top of the 2nd round have been grabbing stud QBs. In the first one, the 2.01 was Manning and 2.02 was Romo. In the 2nd, Brady slid to 1.10, and the guys at 2.02 and 2.05 took Manning and Romo.

ETA: 1st draft - 13 of first 24 were RBs -- 2nd draft - 11 of first 20

In my money league (6pt TDs, no PPR), the trend of more QB's and WR's in the first 2 rounds is slowly happened over the last 3 years. I think we are finally realizing that 6pt TD QB's are worth alot more than we've been giving them credit for. Probably because most rankings out there are 4pt TD scoring...

This year I expect a sea shift in draft strategy and I think the first round will be about 9 RB's, and the second round might be only about 6 RB's. I have the 9th slot and will be taking either Moss or Brady if they fall to me, but If I get a RB I will be targeting Romo in round 2. Last year Romo was #2 in scoring behind Brady and a VBD position of #5 overall. I don't expect that to change this year.

You can expect 3-4 QB's to go 1st two rounds, with Brady being the only first rounder. And 4-5 WR's to go the first two rounds with Moss being the only first rounder. People are picking a few more non-RB's in the first couple rounds, but I don't see a drastic shift. Most people are trying to make sure they get at least one solid RB, and then an elite player at either WR or QB.

In my small 8-team league, last year 15/16 were RBs, with Manning the lone non-RB. This year it was 10/16, with 3QB and 3WR. I've done a few mocks and there does seem to be a trend towards less RBs in the early rounds and with the top 4 QBs and top tier WRs going early. I've even seen a few WR runs in the second round.

I'm not sure what the best reaction to this trend is...I think it may be to take at least one top WR early. There is quite a bit of RB value to be found in the 4th-6th because of this, and if you don't get a top WR early, you could end up on the wrong side of a run. In my 8 team league, I took Brady and Wayne 1 and 2, and ended up with Portis, Lewis, Jacobs, and Parker as my RBs. Granted this is a tiny league, with more than a couple of fish, but from what I've seen, decent RB talent can be had in the middle rounds.

I saw some whacky stuff in my draft this year - I picked 9th, and 5 QBs were gone before I got my 2nd pick (Brady, Romo, Roethlisberger, Brees, Manning). I was stunned - also, Westbrook fell to me at #9, and I picked up MJD on the turn. I wasn't planning on going RB/RB, but those guys fell to me, and I couldn't pass them up. There were a ton of WRs and QBs gone by the end of the 3rd round.

Drafted on Sat in a startup Dynasty Draft. I picked 1.1. I was fully determined to pick RB at 1.1 and come back with RB/WR at 20 and 21 (10 team league). I went with Edwards and Steve Smith. My next two picks were Kevin Smith and Michael Turner to go along with ADP.

Only 12 TB's went in the first 20 picks:

1 Knights ADP

2 Storm LT

3 Dragons Sjax

4 Rock Westbrook

5 RR Addai

6 Tguns Gore

7 Celtics Lynch

8 Storm MBIII

9 SS Moss

10 AA LJ

11 AA Wayne

12 SS TO

13 Storm Brady

14 Celtics Portis

15 Tguns MJD

16 RR Grant

17 Rock Peyton

18 Dragons Romo

19 Doms Fitz

20 Knights Edwards

Last 3 drafts from a 10 team league, standard scoring:

2006

1st round - 10 RBs

2nd round - 1 QB, 3 RBs, 6 WRs

2007

1st round - 10 RBs

2nd round - 1 QB, 8 RBs, 2 WRs

2008

1st round - 8 RBs, 1 QB, 1 WR

2nd round - 4 RBs, 2 QBs, 4 WRs

Not sure if this helps or not???
