Are the Chiefs finally going to draft a franchise QB this year? (1 Viewer)

KC has not been a position like they are now with a chance to draft the top QB in the draft - and it happens to be one who actually looks like he'll be a good NFL QB. Bloom has it right in his mock:

5. Kansas City - Matt Ryan, QB, Boston CollegeJake Long is the dream come true for the Chiefs here, and they might be tempted to grab the second best tackle on their board if Jake does not fall to them, but Ryan gives them the opportunity to have a franchise QB for the team to rally around. The organization is cheap, which almost makes Ryan an even better pick. QBs on the open market worth anything are going to demand as much or more than likely the 20mil(+?) guaranteed the #5 pick will get. Derek Anderson got 14.5 mil guaranteed on a 3 year deal. It's hard to see the Chiefs making a splash at QB in free agency at that rate, and they certainly don't have the answer on the roster right now.

Not sure that Ryan is a franchise QB, especially with a BS o line but it's better than the pro football weekly draft that has them taking mcfadden

Give Croyle a shot ? If he doesnt work out, get a QB next year. But of course they might have written off Croyle already, I havent really heard much about it.

Todd Blackledge worked out nicely.

Steve Fuller, Pete Beatherd... they haven't exactly built a solid foundation of selecting quality 1st-round QBs.

THere's no way Jake Long falls past the Rams IMO. The Chiefs do need help in a lot of places, O-Line, CB, QB, and LB. Ryan is certainly a possibility.

Two things here.

1. I find it hard to see the Rams pass on Jake Long as well.

With Pace on the decline, and Barron continuing to struggle, they have to find better protection for Bulger, who they just signed to a contract extension last year.

2. If the Chiefs are to draft a franchise QB this year, you first have to determine if there actually is one for the taking in this class.

I don't think Ryan or anybody else is clear cut in that regard this year. For the money being put down for that no. 3 pick, I think I'd rather go with a little more certainty at another position. As far as value is concerned, they'd be better off selecting a QB in a later round.

Ideally, if it's truly believed that the Raiders want McFadden, I'd be looking into trading down with the Jets, who also covet McFadden. I'd much rather see McFadden as a Jet anyhow, where he'd have a far better opportunity to become the player we all think he can be.

Chiefs don't have the #3, they have the #5. It won't be as costly. At #5, a trade down with the Jets (#6) wouldn't affect OAK (#4). Anyway, IMO KC will address another of their many needs at #5 and look to draft QB in round 2 to compete with Croyle, and BAL will take Ryan at #8.

I see the Chiefs taking a QB like JD Booty from USC 2nd day. I expect them to take best available tackle at 1.05, but they may be able to trade down a bit. If they would drop 3-6 slots and pick up a 2nd, they should. At 1.05, the salary is not quite as astronomical, so teams may move up. A team that covets possibly a Gholston, McFadden, or Ryan may pull the trigger.

If there is one available when they draft, as there should be, it would be hard to understand why they wouldn't.

From what I understand about this class of Qb's. If J.P. Losman was in it? He would be highest rated Qb out of them.

:lmao:Yea, this franchise has NEVER developed it's own QB, but have been very good in finding QBs via trade/FA. Dawson was a trade, so was Trent Green.I am torn. If you go back and look at every draft in the last 25 years, almost every year there is a QB who turns out to be a franchise QB. It is just determining who that guy(s) is/are. I am not sold that Matt Ryan is that guy. I like Henne, but not at 1.5.At this point, KC needs so much help on offense, I will be good with just about anything outside of TE or RB @ 1.5, although the best option -- at this time, for this team, is to trade down for more picks, and try to get Henne.

If I were the chiefs, I'd be going BPA in the first and then looking to land Henne in the second.

they'll have to move infront of atlanta in round2 to grab henne, me thinks
......if Atlanta doesn't take a QB (Ryan) in round 1, I think KC has a hard time passing him up at 5...

I don't think there are any definite franchise QBs in this draft. The value is on the line of scrimmage where KC is drafting in the 1st round.

they can afford to grab any of the other touted rookie qbs - flacco, henne, brohm, booty et al - later in the draft.
