Are the Patriots still an elite team? (1 Viewer)

I think they will win their division, but I can't see this team going deep in the playoffs. Their defense is average and their offensive is no longer one of the top in the NFL. Even when they get healthy, I don't think they are close to Denver's level. Thoughts?

A healthy Gronk will open up a lot of things for them IMO. Guy is one of the best weapons in the NFL. Too soon to write them off.

no. i think the bills win that division.

I'd have to see them at full strength first. They should make the playoffs and then anything can happen, but I wouldn't bet on them making the AFC championship this year though.

New England has a way of getting better as the season wears on. Usually, their defense gels a bit by then. Also, injuries can run their course upon teams that may look good early on (such as Denver).

But, at the moment, they are not an "elite" team with all the recent player turnover. Losing a Gronk, Welker, Hernandez and even Lloyd is a lot of change. They are clearly in transition.

dum topic of course they are idiot
It is a "dum" topic, but it is because we are in week 2. Bring it up when the Pats are 10 and 4 and we aren't sure if it is them or the wins against a crappy division.

They should still win their division, but until they get things figured out on the offensive side of the ball they will not go far in the playoffs.

Please tell us your definition of the word "elite".

In my opinion, in society (especially in sports), its used so much that the term has lost almost all its true meaning.

Elite meaning they are one of the top 4 teams in the NFL and have a legitimate chance at winning a Super Bowl.

Pats fan checking in here: Hell no. Add in a healthy Gronk, Vereen and Amendola and give Thompkins a litlte experience, and they might be more competitive later this season. But they're looking like an 8-9 win team as they stand right now. Thankfully they have TB next week who look equally crappy.

IF they can escape this week with a win (far from certain) they have a good shot of stating 3-0 with Gronk (hopefully) and Amendola (possibly) coming back to face Atlanta. Will see..

There's no such thing as an "elite team"
Disagree.

85 Bears

72 Dolphins

04 or 07 Pats

91 Skins

84 Niners (or choose your own year in the 80s)

75 Steelers

98 Broncos (or choose your own year in the 70s)

71 or 77 Cowboys

99 or 01 Rams

86 Giants

76 Raiders

All unquestionably elite.

I keep hearing about "chemistry with the WR's" but IMO Tom Brady has played pretty crappy this season.

Unfortunately a crappy Tom Brady is still good enough to beat the Jets and Bills.

SF, DEN, SEA, GB, NO, all better than NE

DET, CHI, DAL, PHI, ATL, BAL, NYG, HOU = or might be better than NE this year.

Nope Not elite, with Gronk they are almost elite.... Vereen, amendola and gronk healthy maybe we can say that...

They will take a step back this year, but, next year, their 3 rookie wrs will no longer be rookie wrs. They could be back to dominance next year...dobson and thompkins look like they have the goods and maybe boyce too...

you forgot a bunch of good teams
Feel free to add whatever teams you like. Not sure why you assumed this was supposed to be a comprehensive list as opposed to one that just tries to prove a point.

Belichick's arrogance finally caught up to him this year. He cheaped out on Welker and thought he could get by with Amendola who can't stay on the field and a trio of questionable rookie WR. They are lucky they got three bad teams to start the season before they face real opposition. This buys time to get Gronk back and let the rookies develop some.

Will they even beat the Jets tonight at home where losing is a rarity?

Not really elite since spygate. Have they won anything since?
They've been a better team every year since till now. Do you even watch football?
do you?
Explain.
What you stated is untrue and absolutely ridiculous.
The only way you come to this conclusion is if you only count rings, if you look at literally anything else you are entirely wrong - as a team they have been better every year until now.

Thompkins was extremely close to making a beautiful diving catch for a touchdown. If Dobson pulls in a couple of those drops, everyone would be slobbering all over him.

They're rookie WRs playing in arguably one of the most complex passing offenses in the league.

It's the second game of the season.

They don't have hands. It was pretty damn clear. If Gronk comes back next week as predicted, it will open up the passing game for Edelman and vice versa. Once Amendola returns, they should be back to being efficient on O with 3 passing threats again.

Ok, so when do you start realizing he sucks then?

Week 4? is there a certain time when it is allowed to realize someone sucks?

Thompkins? It was clear he sucked last week.
