Second Opinion - Week 2 By Jene Bramel
Danny Amendola
By definition, a full dislocation of the elbow joint involves rupturing ligaments that help to stabilize the joint. Like an MCL tear in the knee, those ligaments aren't usually repaired surgically unless the joint remains very unstable after it's been reduced back into place. Instead, the ligaments are allowed to scar down, then heal. Generally, that means 1-2 weeks of immobilization, then another 2-4 weeks of strength and range of motion rehabilitation. It may be theoretically possible to brace the elbow such that a recurrence of the dislocation is unlikely despite the damaged ligaments. But I'd be very surprised if a wide receiver, needing full range of motion to play his position and protect himself, would be cleared to play with a brace. If Amendola is begging to play this week, it likely means that there were no broken bones or other severe injuries associated with his dislocation. I think most players in that situation would take 3-6 weeks to return.
