Gay and lesbian troops perform in drag on American military base

Troops based at the Kadena Air Base in Japan know how to party. On Saturday, six gay and straight service members applied some of their finest makeup and lip synced to "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" in what is believed to be first drag queen and king show on an American military base. The show was thrown in support for the base's recently formed OutServe-SLDN chapter, a nonprofit advocacy group for the army's LGBT community.

Navy Lt. Marissa Greene told Stars and Stripes she only expected to sell 75 tickets for the variety show, but ended up selling more than 400 in ten days. The event went through the same approval process as other on-base fundraisers go through, with the only caveat being that it was not allowed to be labeled a "drag show" in its publicity materials. The show was warmly received by spectators, who rocked out to performances by the likes of Manny Nuff and Chocolate Sunrise ("a crowd favorite," the website notes.)

Just a few years ago, performances like these would have been grounds for a possible discharge. The repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell has made it possible for events like this to occur.

I was TDY to Kadena for a while in 2004. There isn't much to do around there. Not surprised 400 people went to the only event in town. My feeling is that gays and lesbians will be accepted in the military, but when you get flamboyant about it, you're asking for trouble.

you're making a huge jump with homophobic to racist. I'll just say there are still some circles/units who haven't come around on this yet, and that's fine. The good they do far outweighs their negative feelings towards a certain group. While you may call them Neanderthals, they are the same type of person America needs.

Sure there are, there are racist white people, rasicst philipinos, racist black people, racist hispanics...not disputing any of that. The commands that i served during my 20 years i dont recall any major incidents between the groups of people. Never once saw a homosexual person get kicked out although we all knew of gay people that served. Nobody really cared to be honest....

Right we had several all but out people in both the commands I served in and the majority of folks didn't care.

The only ones who did seem to care were the same people who complained about the s, the spics, etc.

No disrespect NCC, I like you. you're a good dude. But you are just wrong with this one. I personally have no problems with gay folks. I think my own brother may even come out one day. I do get annoyed with the flamboyant gays, but I tolerate it.

However, I work with a group currently that will not have that S##T. And I don't blame them. They are a deeply routed brotherhood. If one member refuses it, the whole group stands with him. It will take time to adjust to these things.

I am only going with my 20 year experience. The female communications officer i flew with was known as "John Denver" for crying out loud. She even had pics of her life partner on her desk back at the squadron and this was back in 1999....

I am assuming here you are talking some kind of special forces unit. I can see what you are saying in that context but we both know that is a pretty narrow subset of the military. I was talking about generally.

I served over 20 years and NEVER heard a single soldier use one of these terms. If you did and allowed it, you failed pretty miserably in your duties.
