LB Arrington To Disrupt From Strong Side

Arthur Staple, Newsday - [Full Article]

HC LTom Coughlin gave a quick preview of his team's defensive alignment on the second draft day, casually mentioning that LB LaVar Arrington would be the Giants' starting strong-side linebacker, not weak-side as Arrington played last year with the Redskins. "The type of personnel we have, it allows us to do so many things," Arrington said yesterday. "You're going to see a lot of different looks from us. DC Lewis says he wants me closer to the ball. That means closer to the quarterback. The plan is for me to be disruptive." :excited: :excited:

Arrington isn't ever going to be much better than a marginal #2/decent #3 FF LB. His biggest problem is himself. He's so convinced that he's the best player on the field for either team that team work, discipline, & defensive scheming don't apply to him.

Because he's so undisiplined, he's hard for a D coordinator to count on. It ought to be interesting watching he & the discipline master Coughlin go head to head this year. Talk about your matches made in Hell...

With Arrington at strong I am am hoping that it could be a scrap for weak side. Two vets, Brandon Short/ Carlos Emmons will compete as Coughlin never liked Barret Green. Acorsi took OLB Gerris WIlkinson in round three of the draft, who was very solid as an ILB at Georgia Tech. They destroyed Miami late last year among some other impressive games. I just drafted Wilkinson in a dynasty league, crossing my fingers that an injury to Emmons/Short gets him into the mix early.

I just picked up Arrington in my dynasty league for $7 (yearly $70 allotment) with Only one year left on his contract, he'll be an RFA (right to match $ bid) after this year. Coughlin has talked about moving him around, the way the Giants used LT. Could be a waste of league money, but I figure it's worth a shot. If he gets off to a hot start, he's trade bait.

A good pick when they play the Redskins for sure. :)

Good move picking up Wilkinson. The Giants coaches are really high on him and seem to want to get him onto the field. The Giants currently don't have any playmakers at WLB so if Wilkinson is able to grab hold of the position he might not let it go.

Agreed on Arrington's fantasy usefulness ... I wouldn't want to rely on him to be any more than a #3 and even then there are much better options. The owner in our league who had him could've pawned him off for a good chunk of change this offseason but surprisingly kept him, despite the fact he had easily 3 linebackers who were all head an shoulders better than Lavar. Of course this guy is a Skins fan and all of this went down before Lavar bought his way out of town. I think if he could do it over he would.

It's obviously bad from a fantasy standpoint, but I'm also scratching my head on this one from a football standpoint. You put a guy known for freelancing at the OLB position with the most responsibility for pass coverage duties given the TE? I don't get it.

If they do mean to move him around a lot then I suppose the designation of Will vs. Sam means little, but they're making it a point to say he's the strong side 'backer, so again I'm left to wonder.

Agreed .. given the Giants roster and positional need, I'd much prefer Lavar doing his freelance work from the weakside, leaving Emmons/Torbor to man the SLB. Emmons is NOT a good option at WLB

Any chance Pierce might play WLB if Wilkerson wowed in camp at MLB? I was really hoping the Chargers would draft Wilkerson and think he has a lot of upside. I actually like Torbor but think Wilkerson has the potential to be much better.

Recognizing that I'm not a Giants fan and there are others who are better informed about the workings of the team than I am, I'd vehemently say "no!". Pierce has a decent amount of athleticism, but what makes him a good player is his ability to lead, call plays in the huddle, and make defensive audibles and adjustments. It's what made him a very good MLB for the 'Skins, and that's why the Giants acquired him. Of all the roles among the LB's for the Giants, I'd say at this point that his is the most defined.
