Artificial sweetener in some peanut butter deadly to dogs (1 Viewer)

Took a trip to the vet today. I have a 19-year-old cat from my apartment days that had a mini-stroke last tonight. She's better today, thankfully. Going to start her on some aspirin to try to avoid more of them.

While I was there they had a few warnings up about a new peanut butter ingredient that can be deadly to dogs. Before I lost my two dogs to cancer, they loved peanut butter as a treat so I checked the warnings just to see what was up.

It's an artificial sweetener called Xylitol that is a good substitute for humans, particularly diabetics, and even helps your teeth out. But it destroys dog's livers and can be fatal. It has been around for a few years but has now started showing up in some specialty peanut butters. People are trying to get the manufacturers to use warnings not suitable for pets but not all of them are doing so yet.

Sounds like it's mostly specialty brands so far, but for those of you with four-legged family members, check the labels first to be safe.
