Artificial sweeteners give me GAS (1 Viewer)

So I have a theory I'm hoping to prove...I occasionally get serious bubble gut at work. My stomach starts making noises usually reserved for humpback whales, and I have to fart endlessly. It only happens every now and then. I couldn't for the life of me isolate what it was.

For the most part, my mid-day lunch is exactly the same. 1 Lean Cuisine of some 10 or so varieties, a Chobani yogurt, a bag of baby carrots, 2 clementines, and a little pack of crackers at some point. What does change from time to time is my beverage choice. I usually just drink water. I wanted some flavor, so I bought some of those Minute Maid water enhancer drops a month or two ago. I think that when I use those, I get the bubble gut. I figured it was just those drops, so I don't use them much now. Then, yesterday, they provided lunch for a meeting...I had a Snapple diet iced tea. 30 minutes into the meeting...here come the whales. So I looked at the ingredients, and it had some artificial sweetener.

The only link I can find is that Diet Snapple has aspartame in it...The MM drops have stevia extract in them. Other than that, I don't drink much "diet" stuff. I'm more of a water or brewed iced tea guy...no carbonation (except beer). It's got to be the artificial sweetener, right?

Anybody else have a similar issue? I'm just trying to pinpoint what could cause it. When it happens, I literally could fart every 3 minutes for 4 hours or so...

I know how you feel. That stuck between a rock and a hard place feeling while you're in a meeting sucks; do you hold in the farts or let the whales mate?

For me, its all but disappeared after I dropped eating all of the processed foods. Eating natural whole foods has done wonders for my body.

I usually HAVE to vent the system at some point. Fortunately for me, there is rarely a smell, and I can keep them quiet. If I didn't, I think they could literally hear the whales on the conference call off the room mics.

I swear, I'm more scared of stuff that says, "Diet" than I am of normal stuff these days because in order to make it "Diet" and taste edible, they put all this crap in. I don't want to end up having to look at the label of everything I ingest, but maybe that's the next step.

It's amazing how they can take a natural sweetener like stevia and #### it up. The extract provides just enough "stevia" to be able to put it on the label. :wall:

It's the sugar alcohols that do this to me. Almost as bad as drinking milk.
Oh I didn't even go there...The wife forbids me from having dairy after dinner. I'll inflate the covers...and unlike the whale calls, milk farts smell. My parents still joke about the road trip where I had a Carnation Instant Breakfast shake before we hit the road...Used to love those, and wasn't allowed to have them after that trip.

I'll never understand people who are lactose intolerant who still insist on drinking milk. I stopped almost 20 years ago.
It only gives me issues sometimes, and it's usually just gas. No issues with dairy more broadly...just milk/ice cream. Cheese and processed stuff I'm fine with. I don't think I'm full-on intolerant

Give me a strawberry milk shake from Tastee Freeze, and I'll play you a song.

Cheese generally doesn't cause issues for people who are lactose intolerant because the lactose is removed as part of the manufacturing process. If you have issues with milk/ice cream, you're lactose intolerant.

Didn't know that re. Cheese...

I guess I'm "sometimes" lactose intolerant then...It really depends. Like I said, I can eat 4 milk shakes, and be fine with 3 of them, but the 4th one will cause some issues. I am 1/2 Asian, which might explain some of it...

I'm like this too. (Minus 1/2 Asian.) I can have yogurt and cheese. Some ice cream will be fine. Occasionally real milk with my coffee.. Randomly I'll have some form of ice cream, or a milk shake that makes me gassy and sometimes paint the toilet. No rhyme or reason.

Fiber One bars give me the loudest and smelliest farts you could ever imagine.
:goodposting:

They were giving these out one morning outside of Penn Station when I used to take the train into NYC every day. I snagged 2 (they were free...) and ate them on my cross-town walk. That was a fun day.
