Ask me anything: My apartment building is on fire edition! (1 Viewer)

In your apartment, or just in the general area? Do you have anything in your apartment that would cause legal issues if found?

My building. Nothing of significance. In this area I have nothing that would cause cops to bat an eye.

Where will you sleep tonight?
I imagine they'll let us in at some point. The fire is several floors above my apartment.
doesnt sound promising if they are hosing something down.
Ladder going from one of the trucks to the top floor several floors above me.
right.........water with the aid of some gravity sounds like your place is gonna be wet
I loved every stick of furniture in that place...

Pretty sure I could climb in through the window. I'm on the first floor.
oh crap, drilling holes in the floor might be real dumb then, unless there is a basement.

Well good luck man. Sucksssssssssssssssssss

They're letting us back inside. That smell is horrendous. Toxic burnt plastic odor. Puddles of water everywhere.

Well, either the owner of the building has insurance, or you sue the people who's place was burning and hope they do.

This of course is if your stuff is ruined.

Stuff appears mostly fine inside my apartment. I'm lucky. Early Christmas miracle? There's clearly some damage to others on my floor. Wonder how much water damage there is dripping down my direction.

I wonder if you can even still stay there. You probably wont know for a few more hours

I work for a company that handles the water mitigation and all the repairs for properties like yours.

Please get renters insurance. It's ~$10-$15 a month. With it, you could be laid up in a nice hotel for a few days to months for free and all your clothes , electronics, and furniture get cleaned or replaced,

Without it.....

My understanding of renters insurance is that you'll only receive a fraction of what your stuff is worth and it is nowhere near as valuable as homeowners insurance.... false?

Home insurance is better then renters insurance , true.

I dont know if the first part of your sentence is true or not.

Well, homeowners insurance is more expensive, but it also covers a lot more.

Renters insurance is very important. 10 bucks a month max. I think I pay like 7. And if my place burns to the ground I get like 50 grand.

You receive what your policy says you will receive if there is "total loss".

We got some water drippage through the night, but overall it appears my apartment was unscathed. Crews in today doing work around the building. I'll look into renters insurance, but it looks like I got very lucky.

Was there lots of smoke? Had a fire in my building awhile back. No damage but they redid all the apartments new paint, carpets and such because of smoke smell.

Yes. When I left my apartment the hallway outside my door was a bit smoky, but when I turned the corner the smoke was everywhere and it was virtually impossible to see anything. Some of the firefighters were setting up giant fans to suck out a lot of the smoke. When we went back in the smoke was lingering just a bit.

The burning plastic/electric/toxic smell was absolutely nauseating when we came back in.

Sounds like the same thing we experienced. They brought in crews who packed up/ moved around all our stuff while redoing the apartment and put us up in an suite type hotel for a week or so.

A good friend of mine had a fire at his house, wasn't major damage, but he stayed at my apartment for a few days. We went out the night it happened and I probably played this song on the jukebox like 10 times. He didn't find the humor in it that I did.
