Just a thought , Week 14 is most leagues 1st week of playoffs. I love the shark pool and all the great FF minds that contribute. Maby just this week , or even 14-16 , some of you should make an effort to answer a few WDIS? for some of the "less informed" FF players. There doesnt seem to be alot of good advice going around in there. Mostly " start this player...... Please see mine". Im sure many would appreciate if a little of the SP info would trickle down to the ACF.
With all due respect (and this isn't intended as snarky) if they're "less informed", it's their responsibility to become informed, and then utilize that information to make intelligent decisions. There's a wealth of discussion in the Shark Pool on decision-making processes, player outlooks, talent projection, and lineup strategy. It's quite possible to learn how to become a better fantasy football player without ever asking another person what to do about your weekly lineup. Like everything else in life, why
wouldn't you want to empower yourself to make your own decisions? I'd say the best thing that the SP can do to help them is simply invite them to participate, be willing to explain theory and practice, and reduce the amount of ridicule and toolness that goes around.
Really? So you think school, apprenticeship and parenting are all a waste of time? Do you scold and punish your children when they ask for guidance? Do you tell your friends to take a flying leap if they ask for your advice? If anything, you prove to yourself to be the ultimate tool on this board if this is truly your take. This is the most absurd argument I've yet to hear on this board. I fully agree that it is a person's responsibility to seek out their own education assuming they are an adult. Grow a pair and understand a real person does just that by asking for help when they need it.
That's all fine and dandy (as well as being incredibly rude, judgmental and arrogant) but you forget that we are neither their teacher, boss nor parent. At least I don't think I am any of their teachers, bosses or parents and if I am then "Quit wasting your time on message boards and get back to your books/work/chores you lazy ########!!!"
I'm all for helping my fellow man, and I think we do a fine job of that for fantasy purposes in the SP, but fantasy football is not the altruistic cause that I am going to hang my hat upon.
I'm glad someone quoted EdwardCat, as I have him on ignore for consistent general toolishness. However, clearly he's misunderstanding the purpose of education. Certainly, everyone is familiar with the old adage of “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish, and you have fed him for a lifetime.” In other words, it’s the role of both educator and learner not merely to provide answers, but to engender learning and self-sufficiency, so that the person can later perform tasks independently. At no point do I think the purpose of education, apprenticeship, or parenting is to facilitate a person’s dependence or irresponsibility.
Thus, I believe that education--yes, even in fantasy football forums--comes from encouraging people to participate in the greatest luxury we have--active, daily discussions on numerous theoretical and practical topics. It does not, however, consist merely of asking a teacher, a parent, or a friend to tell you what to do. That’s irresponsible, and doesn’t facilitate knowledge or growth.
Imagine a classroom where the teacher only answered very specific, closed questions.
Student 1: “Prof, what’s the solution to 3X+4Y=12?”
Student 2: “Sir, what’s the solution to 8X-7Y+(3X-4)=81?
What will help them more? Telling them the answer, or teaching them the mathematical process behind it? Exactly--the process.
Likewise, ACF users will learn far more by hanging around the SP than they will by the SP dropping by to answer their lineup questions. They don’t even have to participate, if they’re shy. They can simply read the excellent debates, points, and counterpoints brought up by the veteran posters. Instead of simply asking closed questions like, “Who should I start, Holmes or Evans”, they can learn fundamentals that can broaden their knowledge base and enable them to independently assess their situation
So yes, I’ll stand by my comments that the best way the SP can help people is by welcoming them into SP discussion threads, being willing to explain things, and attempting to reduce the amount of general assery that goes on far too often in the Shark Pool.
Apparently, EdwardCat feels that’s absurd.
