AT40 - This Week In 1970 (1 Viewer)

Whoa. This must have been one of Casey's first.

40. "Heed The Call" - Kenny Rogers & The 1st Edition

39. "I Am Somebody" - Johnnie Taylor

Black pride music was busting out all over. I reckon there will be many more records like this to come.

38. "For The Good Times" - Ray Price

This is a GREAT song,; one of those that's so well-written that anyone with an ounce of talent could make sound good. Ray Price, though, was one of the great singers of his era. A true classic.

37. "Lucretia McEvil" - Blood, Sweat, and Tears

This is an odd record (the bridge is better than the rest of it, IMO) I was never a fan of David Clayton Thomas - he tries too hard.

35. "After Midnight" - Eric Clapton

There are those who will tell you that JJ Cale's version is better and that Clapton selling it to Michelob was selling out.

They are wrong. This is a great record.

32. "As Years Go By" - Mashmakahn

Holy crap. I haven't heard this song since - probably - this original countdown. It's like Gypsy-Prog

29. "Look What They've Done To My Song" - New Seekers

Hippy-pop was winding down at this point, but the NS kept the flame alive for a year or two - and sang in French!

28. "Share The Land" - Guess Who

Burton Cummings might have been the lamest hippy of all time, but that dude had a voice and the GW was a fine band

26. "Yellow River" - Christie

Ironic, considering a name in the news recently and the title
Written by the great Brill Building songsmith Izzy Paul Freely, of course.

Be kind to your servers, ladies & gentlemen - we'll be here all week!!!!!!!

24. "Stand By Your Man" - Candi Staton

Wasn't Clarence Carter married to her? In any case, she may be the most beautiful woman to ever have a hit record

22. "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" - Elvis

The less-hip Elvis, but I think he liked songs like this more than the records that made him The King

21. "It's Only Make Believe" - Glen Campbell

I love Glen, but he's got no shot against Conway Twitty's booming baritone on the original.

20. "Heaven Help Us All" - Stevie Wonder

The song that's been in my head more the last week or two than any other. You can see Innervisions from this record.

19. "Engine #9" - Wilson Pickett

If I was asked to equate a jackhammer with a voice, it would be one of Pickett's records. "Hard" singers like Hetfield are pretenders compared to this dude.

Have you been watching "Soundbreaking" on PBS. 8 part series - 4 this wk (4 in a row on right now on 1 of my PBS stations) - on the recording industry? Fabulous, including a whole section about 2 Moog guys turning Steveland onto synths and becoming his producers for that 5-disk run that i'll put against any in recording history.

 "Immigrant Song" - Led Zeppelin

Bonham's greatest hit. This ####### song is just brutal - and I mean that in the best possible way. Jesus, how many speakers did I blow to this one?

edit: not part of the countdown; an extra from the #1 album

No, but I'm gonna now

18." Still Water Runs Deep" - Four Tops

Not my favorite Tops record, but that's like saying "this breath of air could have been better". Levi Stubbs is one of the greatest lead singers of all time.

15. "Super Bad" - James Brown

I believe, at this point, James had hired Bootsy & Catfish......in any case, he was basically doing one long song with a lot of movements over several records (kinda like a prog group)

13. "Montego Bay" - Bobby Bloom

I dunno...... I kinda hate this song, but I kinda don't. Next topic for therapy

9. "Gypsy Woman" - Brian Hyland

As rip-offs go, this ain't half bad. Go listen to the Impressions original for a whole 'nother take on it, though

8. "Somebody's Been Sleeping" - 100 Proof Aged In soul

In which the band name finally outdoes the song title. Cool song, though

16. "Lola" - Kinks
The first song that really taught me how to sing rock. Chopping inspirations into syllables and, as me ol mate Robt Palmer was forever insisting, "knowing when to shut your ####in' gob!".
