Atlanta Hawks owner Bruce Levenson is selling his controlling interest in the team, NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced Sunday.
In July, Levenson self-reported an email he wrote to the team's co-owners and general manager Danny Ferry in August 2012 that he called "inappropriate and offensive." The league commenced an independent investigation after being made aware of the comments.

Levenson writes in a statement that the racially offensive comments came as he pondered ways to bridge Atlanta's racial sports divide and increase fan attendance at Hawks' games.

"In trying to address those issues, I wrote an e-mail two years ago that was inappropriate and offensive," he said. "I trivialized our fans by making clichéd assumptions about their interests (i.e. hip hop vs. country, white vs. black cheerleaders, etc.) and by stereotyping their perceptions of one another (i.e. that white fans might be afraid of our black fans). By focusing on race, I also sent the unintentional and hurtful message that our white fans are more valuable than our black fans."

"If you're angry about what I wrote, you should be," Levenson continued in the statement. "I'm angry at myself, too. It was inflammatory nonsense. We all may have subtle biases and preconceptions when it comes to race, but my role as a leader is to challenge them, not to validate or accommodate those who might hold them."

Levenson notified Silver on Saturday night of his intentions to sell.

"I commend Mr. Levenson for self-reporting to the league office, for being fully cooperative with the league and its independent investigator, and for putting the best interests of the Hawks, the Atlanta community, and the NBA first," Silver said in a statement.

Levenson had presided over the Hawks' ownership group since 2004. Over the past decade, the team has never ranked higher than 18th in attendance and is largely overlooked in a market that also has the NFL, Major League Baseball and a passion for college football.

Atlanta CEO Steve Koonin will now oversee all team operations.

The Hawks become the second NBA team to hit the market this year. The Los Angeles Clippers were sold for an unprecedented $2 billion earlier this summer to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer after former owner Donald Sterling was banned for life by the league after his racist rant to a woman became public.

His statement:

"Over the past several years, I've spent a lot of time grappling with low attendance at our games and the need for the Hawks to attract more season ticket holders and corporate sponsors. Over that time, I've talked with team executives about the need for the Hawks to build a more diverse fan base that includes more suburban whites, and I shared my thoughts on why our efforts to bridge Atlanta's racial sports divide seemed to be failing.

In trying to address those issues, I wrote an e-mail two years ago that was inappropriate and offensive. I trivialized our fans by making cliched assumptions about their interests (i.e. hip hop vs. country, white vs. black cheerleaders, etc.) and by stereotyping their perceptions of one another (i.e. that white fans might be afraid of our black fans). By focusing on race, I also sent the unintentional and hurtful message that our white fans are more valuable than our black fans.

I have said repeatedly that the NBA should have zero tolerance for racism, and I strongly believe that to be true. That is why I voluntarily reported my inappropriate e-mail to the NBA.

After much long and difficult contemplation, I have decided that it is in the best interests of the team, the Atlanta community, and the NBA to sell my controlling interest in the Hawks franchise.

Hawks CEO Steve Koonin will oversee all team operations and take all organizational reports as we proceed with the sale process.

I'm truly embarrassed by my words in that e-mail, and I apologize to the members of the Hawks family and all of our fans.

To the Hawks family and its fans, you have my deepest gratitude for the past ten years. Working with this team and its extraordinary executives, coaching staff, and players has been one of the highlights of my life. I am proud of our diverse, passionate, and growing legion of Hawks fans, and I will continue to join you in cheering for the best team in the NBA."

There are no shortcuts to using racial tensions to triple the value of your franchise. If this guy wants to fish Oprah and Magic and others to drive up the price of the franchise he is selling so that they can get rid of the racist owner, well then he should have to date V. Stiviano, just like everybody else has had to do.

He should also have said the message was incorrect, which he did not.

He's trying to raise the value possibly? Maybe.

Crunching the numbers on Hawks' ticket sales, season ticket packages, luxury suites, and merchandise purchased, the Hawks' white fans likely do bring in more revenue for the Hawks franchise than their black fans. That doesn't mean that the Hawks white fans are more valuable as humans than the Hawks black fans. It sounds like Levenson was likely discussing "more valuable" in the former sense, and making decisions based on what would appeal more to the white fans who bring in more revenue to his franchise and thus increase it's value. That doesn't make Levenson's comments acceptable from a franchise owner, but he's likley not incorrect in the context in which I presume he was discussing value.

There must be something else to this. Those comments aren't something to dump a team over.
Especially 2 years after the email was sent. Maybe there was blackmail involved or something.
This. He controlled the story from the jump rather than being forced to react after his reputation was dragged through the mud. Even releasing this on Sunday vs Friday afternoon is odd. That pressure came from somebody else, not from a desire to just sell the team.

I'd imagine the Clippers selling for $2B is behind this, or at least excelled this decision. However, if the man can no longer use information available to him that would improve the attendance for fear of stereotyping (I'm only going off the music and cheerleading examples that were mentioned. I don't know what the "fear" part is about.) then it's best he let someone else run it.

Selling the team works for me - ownership has shown themselves to be losers. I'd rather have someone exciting (If Arthur Blank wanted the team, I'd giggle like a schoolgirl).

I don't see anything too terrible in his comments. It's not any different than the Braves moving to the Northside of town where more "season ticket holders" and "team supporters" live. Of course any team wants fans that spend money on tickets and merchandise.

The Sunday of week 1 in the NFL is a pretty good day to try and bury a non-related sports story.

Maybe he wants to sell and this way can help him turn a quick profit.
You don't drive up the price by indicating you're a seller under pressure; that would have the opposite effect.

Certainly he's not under as much pressure to sell as Sterling, but I can only presume that this was announced because it was going to come out anyway and he wanted to get in front of the story for PR/damage control purposes. That's what I think the plan was.

Good point.

I could see where people would be hurt by statements in Levenson's email, but I don't think points he made in the email are wrong or that they indicate that Levenson is racist. Levenson points out, and I think correctly so, that a lot of white people are hesitant to attend majority black events that appear to cater more to black interests. Levenson even seems critical of that attitude, but ackowledges it's there.

I'm guessing that most sports franchise owners consider the exact issues that Levenson did in that email. Those other owners, however, likley aren't foolish enough to put those thoughts in print or in such stark racial terms.

Strange. This appears to be a business guy trying to determine why his business was not working.

This email was significantly more about green than black and white but I guess in our hyper sensative society some will try and demonize him.

I assumed from his statement it was going to be so much worse.

That's not that bad IMO.

He's pretty explicitly critical of the fearful/racist mindset he ascribes to "southern whites":"My theory is that the black crowd scared away the whites and there are simply not enough affluent black fans to build a signficant season ticket base. Please dont get me wrong. There was nothing threatening going on in the arean back then. i never felt uncomfortable, but i think southern whites simply were not comfortable being in an arena or at a bar where they were in the minority. On fan sites i would read comments about how dangerous it is around philips yet in our 9 years, i dont know of a mugging or even a pick pocket incident. This was just racist garbage. When I hear some people saying the arena is in the wrong place I think it is code for there are too many blacks at the games."

I don't buy into the story that he thought that email was so wrong that he needed to sell the team. There's nothing wrong with it.

He is hoping racial comments = $2B payoff

Unfortunately for him, the reasons for poor attendance set out in his email, are what will keep the Hawks from being sold for more than the Bucks...

Nobody in their right mind had the right to expect the Clippers, in the 2nd largest media market in the US, would sell for $2B. It's a ridiculously inflated price that I have yet to hear a good explanation for.

If the Hawks owner is using that as his benchmark, then, well... :lmao:

Not surprisingly, there is more to this story:

A racially insensitive email written by Levenson more than two years ago came to light only after one of his co-owners called for an investigation because of something that was included in a potential free-agent target's background report that was read aloud by team general manager Danny Ferry, who did not fully edit the remark as he read it off the report, according to multiple sources.

<snip>

Sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein and Ramona Shelburne on Monday that the player involved was Miami Heat swingman Luol Deng, who held free-agent discussions with the Hawks in July before signing with the Heat in the wake of LeBron James' return to Cleveland.

I wonder what was said about Deng. Very strange.

The whistleblower got upset after Ferry outed him for having Deng gay fever.

This "clarifying" report is itself pretty vague and tough to understand. What does a background report that Danny Ferry read have to do with Levenson's email from two years ago?

The background report on Deng prompted an investigation. The email was discovered in that investigation.

In my opinion, Levenson and the rest of the ownership group appear to just be behaving like astute investors here. I think they realized that if this email leaked before they got in front of it, and they didn't react to it by pushing Levenson out, then it was likely that their fan base (which has a large black component) would react negatively to the comments and ticket/F&B/apparel sales would be at risk.

By doing what they've done, they have done their best to retain the franchise's value and will be selling their investment during what could justifiably be considered an all-time high for the market (considering the Clippers sale).

Apparently the report prompted an investigation which turned up Levenson's email. He's likely being pressured into this.

Sounds like Ferry was reading a scouting report to the staff....the scouting report contained some kind of racist language....one of the staff members was upset by what Ferry said and demanded a full investigation....and the full investigation turned up Levenson's email from two years earlier.

edit: Ferry's report said "he's not perfect. He's got some African in him."

:golfclap:

This is a business decision being masked in "I am really a good guy" type PR campaign.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear about a Seattle group making a bid for this team....Seattle Seahawks----Seattle Hawks....hmmmmm.....

Have any other nba owners or players applauded this move as a positive step to remove racists from nba ownership?

My understanding was that Ferry did not author the report, but was just reading it verbatim from some scouting sources - potentially not even with the Hawks
