I know its still pretty early, but thought I'd get a thread going about this topic. Harrington or Leftwitch start vs. NYG? I'm sure we'll get some info from coaches press conf. Today.

Leftwich came in, got a sack in the endzone, and threw an INT. I believe he was 2 for 8 passing. This does nothing to put confidence in the coaching staff that he's the guy over Harrington, IMHO.

Putting Leftwich in in the first place was a seriously bad move. If anything, you put in Redman who knows the offense, tho I disagree with pulling Joey in the first place.

I think Joey probably gets the start, just my opinion, but Petrino obviously has a very quick hook, too quick, IMO.

From the Falcons message board. That place is a riot.

Petrino: "Uh, that's affirmative, tower. I got a Leftwich pass comin' in on runway 2-niner-right, so maintain current altitude and prepare to land on runway tango-5-left, copy?"

You had to see the passes.....

That's hysterical. And so true. Byron had 3 completions in the 10th row.I can't even fathom anyone thinking Byron could be the guy, but apparently Petrino gonna at least use him as whip for Joey. Any Louisville folks on the boards? Did he have this quick a trigger there? I was absolutely stunned that he was pulled and tried to convince myself it was because Joey took a shot to the knee, and became less effective after that. Not that he was stellar before, but he wasn't that bad.I'm still stunned.

the giants are gonna have another field day on MNF

gandy is most likely out (possibly career ending) and wiener has been missing some time lately on the line

I wouldnt start harrington week 6

FALCONS STICKING WITH HARRINGTON

Despite a fourth-quarter benching of quarterback Joey Harrington, who was replaced by Byron Leftwich, Falcons coach Bobby Petrino said on Monday that he's sticking with Harrington as the starter.

"I think it was the right thing to do," Petrino said of the decision to pull Harrington.

Petrino also addressed comments from tight end Alge Crumpler, who suggested that veteran players are being phased out and that the coaching staff might be more interested in developing young players than winning.

"Yeah, I spoke with Alge this morning, and we had a good conversation," Petrino said. "There's one agenda here by the coaching staff, and that's to win every week. Win the game that we're playing that week and that's it. That's what we're trying to do. I think we had a good conversation, understand that, you know, we don't like to put things like that in the press. I'd rather him walk into my office if he had something to say."

After the horrendous decision to stick Leftwich in (after only being with the team for 2 weeks), does it really matter who plays QB for this team anymore? Their season is over -- derailed by the coaching staff.

There is a black and white pattern here if you look closely enough. At home, Harrington is actually a really nice fantasy QB if you need him. On the road, he is dreadful. He'll get healthy again on Monday night in Atlanta against the Giants secondary.

ETA his weekly scoring totals in my league to this point:

At home: 22 & 16

On the road: 6, 8, 2

Harrington is not the problem on Atlanta, Atlanta can't run..until that gets fix most teams will stop the pass.
i wonder why Atlanta can't run?
The offense has really been built around Vick. The RBs in the past have benefeited by Vick's QB style, often commanding a LB to key on Vick and contain things on the outside. With Vick in there, Dunn and Norwood could run a lot more freely up the middle. Without him, everything is stuffed up. It's going to be like this all season.

I think it has something to do with the worst offensive line in the National Football League.

Just because Vick made them look a lot better than they were does not mean they aren't, and weren't, the worst offensive line in the national football league.

Right, the worst offensive line in the entire league led the NFL in rushing the last two year. got it.

It helped that the scheme they were running was more conducive to (masking) their 'talents'. That and having a QB that rushed for 1000 yards who had to be accounted for on every play really helped to open the seams for Dunn and Norwood.

i don't care if Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, and Randall Cunningham are running the wishbone back there, the worst offensive line in the entire league doesn't lead the league in rushing two years straight. period.

3 years straight. Who's worse this year?

Michael Vick was back there. He's the best running QB in NFL History. He set 2 rushing records last year while going off for over 1000 yards.

This year? He's gone and we're still waiting for our first 100-yard runner. Rushing yards have decreased by over 50% a game.

i'm not even sure what you're talking about any more.they are and have been an average offensive line (no where near the worst) that was made to look better by the presence of Vick.

Way to speak up Crump Daddy, maybe they will start throwing you the rock

Vick definitely helped Atlanta's run game to the NFL's #1 ranking for three years in a row.

But you also have to remember that Atlanta's O'line has been built for the zone blocking scheme. Smaller & quicker O'Linemen were specifically drafted, traded for & picked up as FA's. Mora was even able to lure Alex Gibbs (the Godfather of the NFL's zone blocking scheme) out of retirement to coach Atlanta's' O'line. Gibbs was the full time O'line Coach in Mora's 1st year as Head Coach & then remained on as a consultant thereafter, cherry picking the O'Linemen he wanted for his zone blocking scheme.

Enter Petrino.

The zone blocking scheme Atlanta has run for the last 4 years has been ditched in favor of his preferred smash mouth mano eh mano blocking. Talk about trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. All during OTA's & then later during TC, the O'Linemen were told to gain weight, gain weight, gain weight. They did get heavier, but since they were handpicked by Gibbs to fit his scheme & were the smaller, quicker more athletic framed O'Linemen, they'll never grow into the massive behemoths that Petrino needs to run his scheme successfully.

So when you combine O'Linemen who are physically ill suited for the style blocking the new Coach wants, along with learning the new scheme & without Vick...that's how Atlanta's run game went from the NFL's #1 ranking for 3 years in a row, to now being the NFL's #22 ranked run team...or wherever they're ranked after this past weekends game.

Let's see....

- you can't start Vick because he's about to go to jail

- you can't start Schaub because you traded him away

- you can't start Harrington because you destroyed his confidence

- you can't start Leftwich because he isn't ready

What a complete disaster. I think their best option is to start Dunn at QB and run a wishbone option with Norwood.

i can't think of any possible reason to start byron leftwich.............unless the NFL starts allowing WRs to go into the stands to catch the passes

Leftwich's performance was one of the worst I have seen. The defense set him up inside the 20 twice in the 4th quarter to tie the game and they couldnt get it done.

It doesnt help when his coach calls a pitch on 1st and goal from inside the 1. How they didnt score on that drive, i dont know.

:goodposting: I think the only way you put Leftwich in there over Redman is if you're ready to make Leftwich the starter and stick with him. If it's just a temporary hook b/c Harrington is having a bad game, then you use Redman precisely as you said. Going back to Harrington here makes the hook decision seem pretty stupid. The only other interpretation I can think of is that Leftwich was so unexpectedly bad that Petrino had to change his mind. If the latter is the case, then Harrington oughta stay the QB for a while now.

Even so, I wouldn't start Joey in week 6 either way. Gandy is out for the season and now, as bad as they were, they're going to have two rookies on the O-Line (I think).

Might want to sit Joey and start the Giants D.
