ATTN: Chase - If AZ wins, are they the new worst SB champs ever? (1 Viewer)

this decade is producing some awful champs... but if Arizona wins next Sunday, I feel like we'd have a new worst champ ever.. NYG '07 was certainly terrible, as was 2001 Pats.. but this is an all new low to have a 9-7 team win it.

What say you for your article?

Granted, we probably don't need to get too intense about it since it's unlikely.. but AZ did just beat Phil, who beat Pitt.. who also thrashed the holy hell out of AZ the first time.

I've never actually seen one, but I'm pretty sure the Championship Rings don't have all the previous winners enscribed in any sort of order on them. As a Cards fan, I don't give a poop about how the win would rank in history.

In a year a year that produced no great teams, no I don't think they'd be the worst SB champs ever. They played great football in the beginning of the year, hit a rough patch, and are now playing arguably the best all around football. Every aspect of their game seems to have hit its stride.

:sigh:

You sure like to beat the same drum over and over again.

I probably should've e-mailed Chase directly I guess.

I just wanted a statistical analysis of the teams and a thought from him.

I know in a prior thread he stated AZ would likely make his top 5 worst, but he wasn't sure who he would bump off the bottom 5.

The NFL should just do away with the playoffs- this way we can guarantee the BEST team will be the NFL champions at the end of the year.. You could plug all kinds of statistics into a computer, and then let all of those brilliant sportswriters vote, average the two, and BANG-- we'll have a TRUE champion..

:lmao:

One thing that Arizona has going for them is a nice margin of victory in the playoffs, so that gives them a leg up on the '07 Giants and '01 Pats of the world, although the '70 Colts, '80 Raiders and '87 Redskins had nice MOVs, too. The other thing is Arizona has a HOF QB playing really good football. The other bad teams either had an average QB or a QB that wasn't playing anywhere near his prime levels. Of course, Arizona's defense leaves a lot to be desired. They'd have the worst pass defense of any SB champion, by a mile. Only the '76 Raiders would come close. That said, you can't say they haven't been tested in the playoffs. They've faced three good QBs and they've done well against all three. You can make excuses if you want (Ryan's a rookie, Delhomme had a bad game/is old, they didn't really shut down McNabb) but I don't think that's fair. This D let Brett Favre throw 6 TDs against them not too long ago; more recently, Tarvaris Jackson threw 4 TD passes. They've come a very long way. They have a bunch of talent but they underachieved all year long. Now they're overachieving. Make of it what you will.

This is getting ridiculous. I was already rooting for the Cards, even tho I like the Steelers too, but now I hope the Cards pummel them 57 to zip just to watch people go slackjawed as they try to rationalize how bad this team really is, we silly fans just can't see the truth.

BTW, Dentist, I'm sure you'll be interested in my analysis of the greatest SB losers of all time. That will be posted on Wednesday, I think.

Good analysis Chet. So overall you thought they might not shove anyone out of the top 5 then..interesting.Kurt Warner has certainly had one of the strangest/most-interesting nfl careers that I can think of.For someone to have their first full season as a starter be an absolute DREAM season... then have another MVP 2 seasons later and make another Super Bowl is an incredible start.. i doubt there's any 2 time MVP's not in the hall, nor QB's that have made 3 Super BowlsYet... in 11 NFL season he has:3 great seasons, 2 good seasons, 6 seasons that he either got no P.T. or was bad/terrible when he did.Despite being on 2 big time super bowl teams with dominant records, he's only like 12 games over .500 for his career as a regular season starter. It's just so weird/strange that he could be undrafted, arena league quality.. then nfl MVP, then trash again, now back..If there's ever been a player who defined "product of system/greatness around him" it's probably Kurt.I guess he is a hall of famer, but what a weird career..and it wouldn't surprise me if he was terrible next year and out of the league for good in 2-3 years (which would be certainly a product of age too)

wonderful.. i'd even like to read the follow up, best teams not to win a title... because some fantastic teams don't even make the super bowl... like 1998 Vikings or 1998 49ers...there are many others, but i can't think of them off the top

#1 is tough to figure out.
I thought that too. But there are at least two other teams that are legitimately in the running, and one other team that statistically is in the running but I don't really know too much about -- I need to research them a bit more. I actually think there's a group of six to eight teams in the running for #1, but I can't argue with anyone who wants to slob all over the 2007 Patriots regular season stats; I certainly was leading that charge last year.

i thinks if the Cards win they will be one of the worst teams to ever win.

I thought the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers were pretty bad also, along with the 2001 Pats.

As i've stated in a previous thread, I don't think the 2005 Pitt team was fantastic, but I'm pretty sure they were superior to 2007 NYG and 2001 Pats.I guess it's the advent of increased free agency, but for whatever reason football is just not generating the quality of champions in general as it has in years past. This decade alone... if the Cards win, amongst the top 5 worst SB champions would include1) 2008 cards2) 2007 Giants3) 2001 PatsNow, granted, Pitt will probably win and would certainly be considered a solid champion with their resume.and if a helmet catch hadn't occurred last year... then we'd only be looking at 2001 Pats as true fraud.that being said, 2006 Colts still shocked the heck out of me.... but not in the same was as 2008 Cards would... just more in a way like 2006 St. Louis Cardinals.. a team that had been quite good, but in a season where they didn't seem very promising they all of a sudden turned it on.
