Auction Strategy (1 Viewer)

How do you recommend allocating your $ during a auction draft?

I am in a 12 team standard scoring with 1 QB, 3 WR, 2 RB, 1 TE, 1 Flex, K, TD, 5 Bench

Do you spend so much on starting line up and so much on bench?

Save $  for the last half of the draft for steals..how much $?

Spend so much $ on WR, RB, TE?

The first thing you need to do is figure out your rankings of players and then give them an auction value based on your rankings.  Try and get players at value compared to how you have money allocated to them.  Don't be afraid to go a little over your values for studs as you likely won't regret spending on studs.  Don't go overboard though.

Don't spend more than $1 on Defense or Kicker.  They are easily replaceable and money is better spent elsewhere.

with the elite tier, its been my experience the first nominated from a position group goes at a reasonable price, and then the last of the tier goes for higher than he's worth.

don't spend more than $10 total on your qb's. dont spend more than $1 on kicker or defense,

You should allocate $ for your QB, RB1, RB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, TE and Flex, and one backup RB.  Figure out based on your projections and market values the most optimal way to construct your team.  You may say....I want a 2nd tier RB as my RB1, an elite WR as my WR1, a QB ranked between 8-12 as your QB, and so on......make sure you have at least 3 options for each slot.  If there's a player you absolutely have to get, nominate them right away.....you need to know right away if you can't win the player given your budget and have to change course.  And make sure you're flexible since certain positions may go for more than you think....or the stud players may go for more than you think.

I try to spend 90% of my cap on my starters and one backup RB.  You don't have to spend more than a $3 on a backup QB, only need to spend a buck on a backup TE if you even need one.  So in a $200 cap, I would allocate $20 for your last 7 spots ($1 for K and a $1 for defense.....$18 for your 5 bench spots).

Good luck!

I usually go spend little on QB and TE and get depth at WR, use WR at Flex most likely and get 2 quality RBs and load up on RBs and 1 WR for bench.

I usually end up with Eli, Palmer, Dalton at QB spending $1 and TE I spend $1-4

Auctions are difficult to give a whole lot of advice for, because each league can be wildly different from one another.  Even in my league, which is over 10 years old now, every year seems to be different.  In the past, the elite tier went for big, big money and then things settled in.  This year, the elite tier were a few dollars less than in years past, but the middle tiers were elevated for a really long streak.  Totally changed how I had to approach my draft once that became apparent.

So, with that said, my biggest piece of advice is to study the guys you like in each tier.  I typically try to get someone in the middle of the tier so I can save a bit of money.  I avoid the top dogs in the first tier because I don't like being hampered too much once the price points settle in a bit.  If you get David Johnson, more than likely, you are going to spend almost half of your budget.  He's great, but I just can't devote that much cash to one guy.

As others have said, wait on kicker and defense...or nominate a top defense for $2 fairly early in the draft.  If someone wants to outspend you on that, great.  If not, I'd be OK parting with an extra dollar to get an elite defense and not worry about carrying another one.  There will be plenty of $1 receivers that you like at the end of the draft too.

This year, I like the middle tier of RBs and think you can pair two solid guys here (I got Demarco, Dalvin Cook, and Doug Martin for just a little more than the price of David Johnson).  I love taking a top 5 wideout and then filling up later in the draft with high upside guys who will be cheap.  Or take three of the second tier WRs.

In the end, I think the best advice is to not get (too) drunk and pay attention to how the draft is playing out.  Don't feel like you need to bid on the first handful of nominations...but don't wait until the list of players you love at each position dwindles down to 2 or fewer players.  You will overpay.  Nominate players that you don't want (only nominate for $1...don't get cute), but others will want.  And don't get too drunk.  Did I say that already?
