Auction - Thoughts on buying 2 of the top 3? (1 Viewer)

OK gang, first our league setup:

12 team

9 starters (QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, K, DEF, Ultimate flex)

5 bench

PPR, standard performance scoring, $200 cap.

I'm highly considering burning $140-$145 or so for two of the top three (LT, LJ, Alexander) and taking my chances with maybe Djax, Plummer and the rest scrubs. Anyone ever try to corner the market on the RB studs?? How did it work out.

We have a very strong, well educated league so there aren't any free passes.

Also, we nominated last year using an "Ultimate Flex" instead of standard WR/RB. It worked beautifully, gives you tons of options for bye weeks. Anyone else do this as well? If not, I strongly consider trying this concept.

I'd take the chance, but make one LT and get Turner. While any Rb will be ok in KC, you'd lose a lot if LJ got injured, same with Alexander. While you'd lose some with LT to Turner, that's an ideal combo for the big bang and his backup.

but Alexander and Morris might be alot cheaper in a PPR

Hell yeah if you can do it. Could you imagine if you got LJ and SA? You'd be looking at, quite possibly, 50 TD's between those two alone! However, I wouldn't count on getting their backups for dirt cheap. People could outbid you knowing you are targeting them. You can always pick up WR's that perform beyond their draft position. I'd like to know if you actually pull that off. I've been thinking about the same thing but our salary cap is $100 and last year LT went for $50 alone.

As long as you get the right two guys, it's great. Last year though, the top guys were Priest, LT2, and Alexander, which means that 2/3 of the time, you would have got screwed with this strategy.

Just like in a draft, where you can't win your league in the first two rounds, but you can lose it, so too in an auction. On the other hand, depending on league setup, the top 3 guys may be valued at over 50% of the cap, so getting both could be a huge bargain.

Do you think you can get two of the top three for 140-145? I would suspect Larry Johnson to bring slightly over 100 himself; and I would put LT2 & SA @ 85ish to 95ish. If you could get two of the top three for 140-145, I would say 'do it in a hard beat'!

I'm still shaking my head over this 45-50%+ for one guy thing; stupid strat IMO, but anyway -

If you can get them both for $140ish (ie reasonable prices IMO) it's worth trying I think. I've thought of doing it this year in fact, but still seems to me that odds are against it working since the scrubs you get to fill out the team will work out will drag you down. Might've worked last year, with a little luck on the remaining scrubs, er make that a LOT of luck. Plus as stated you could easily bust on a "sure thing" stud too, and SA and LJ both probably just had career years. Sure they COULD do it again, but again odds are against it. Even if we assume stuff like losing Hutchinson (SA) or a really old OL who also lost a starter (LJ) won't matter, players simply do not normally put up 2 huge years in a row.

Curious to see how it pans out though, or did pan out for anyone who has tried before.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but I don't understand an "Ultimate Flex".

IMO, the key to the STUDS vs DEPTH auction decision is your league waiver rule structure.

If it's cheap and easy to improve your team from the ww then I say choose STUDS over DEPTH. I'd say this is the case in 90% of leagues.

As tempting as that might be, you are going to have to fill your roster on spare change. I'm assuming these values, you have a better idea what this money will buy for you:

RB 75

RB 70

QB 12

WR 10

WR 8

TE 5

K 1

DEF 3

Flex 7

That's $191, so you've got $9 for 5 bench spots. Good luck in whatever you do at your auction.

Ultimate Flex =

This is my own creation. We decided to allow 1 extra position, you can play anything you want. 2nd Qb, 3rd RB or WR, 2nd TE, K, or DEF. It is the "Ultimate" in flexibility and I haven't seen it anywhere else (while I'm sure someone else has thought of this).

Everyone in our league loves it.

As far as two for $140, according to the varibable drafting system LJ is about $74 and LT$68 for our league settings. I think it is doable.

I did it back in 2003 with LT and Priest but the funny thing is that I was just trying to bid them up and got "stuck" with both of them...it was the 1st yr for our Auction/Keeper league...the following yr I kept both at a LARGE Raise and even though priest got hurt at the end of the yr I still repeated(thank you LJ)...i then retired and the guy that took over that team made it a 3peat

this is the team I won it with in 2003

Code:
Slot Pos Name Bid 1 QB Bouman, Todd $2 2 QB Brees, Drew $2 3 QB Brooks, Aaron $20 4 QB Frerotte, Gus $2 5 QB Volek, Billy $2 6 RB Holmes, Priest $64 7 RB Jordan, LaMont $4 8 RB Tomlinson, L. $71 9 WR Brown, Troy $2 10 WR Jackson, Darrell $17 11 WR Kennison, Eddie $2 12 WR Muhammad, Muhsin $2 13 WR Rogers, Charles $2 14 TE Williams, Boo $2 15 K Elling, Aaron $2 16 DT Chicago $2

Why not just get one of LJ, LT and SA and then grab Portis at a much cheaper price than spending for 2 of those guys?

I agree with BO here. I don't think you will be able to get both for $145. I think LJ is going for over $100 and I could see that drive the market up on SA and LT as well. I don't think you will be able to pull it off.

I took LT and Alexander last year. Paid 145$. Our cap is 200$. Ended up with the most points in the league for the season but got spanked in the playoffs when LT disappeared. I think it depends on the year.

In my $200 12 team/16pos auction keeper $$ league I managed to trade last season for LJ before Holmes went down. At $11 I am contemplating the idea of pursuing LT as well.

My other "givens" as keepers are TO($25) and Chester Taylor($4). We just stepped up to 12 teams from 10, the two new owners having no keepers and thus their full $200 to spend. With some 12 of the top 15 RB's possibly being kept it's concievable that the likes of LT and Edge- not being kept! -could go for upwards of $100.

Either I use my last keeper spot for DD @ $55, draft for more balance, or throw him back and go the two stud RB route.

I hadn't really even considered this until I came upon this thread.

Hmmm... Thoughts?

Portis' value is rising and IMO you won't get him for all that much cheaper than the top 3. I would love to get one of the top 3 and him though.
