Here is a chat transcript from a chat with Kevin Acee at the SD Union-Tribune.
UNION-TRIBUNE
1:24 p.m. February 26, 2007
SouthPaw(Q): Hey Kevin, If you had to guess would you say that a veteran free agent or rookie will be starting opposite McCree next season. If it is a free agent, who? Hamlin? Grant? Lewis?
kevinacee(A): I think A.J. is going to sit back and wait in free agency. Remember, they have Bhaowh Jue, who was injured last year.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Geno(Q): Do you think the Chargers will be as good under Norv Turner next season?
kevinacee(A): There is little chance they go 14-2. Of course, they weren't going to be 14-2 with Marty. I think (and they think) it's still a given they go to the playoffs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SouthPaw(Q): Is there a possibility Olivea could move inside to replace Dielman (if he leaves)& Oben would move to RT? What other options are the Chargers exploring at LG if Dielman does leave?
kevinacee(A): That is something they have looked at, and I have to think that is in the back of A.J.'s mind, since it is increasingly likely Dielman is gone.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
miamiboltfan(Q): Do you think that Marty should have been fired?
kevinacee(A): I think if he was going to be fired, he should have been fired right after the season. I give Dean Spanos credit for finally doing it, because he didn't think Marty was the guy to take his team to the Super Bowl, but I think his error was in waiting so long.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Geno(Q): Marty was told he had to go deep in the playoffs last season. Will A.J. or Norv pay the price if the team doesn't do as well in 2007 as 2006 and go deep in the playoffs?
kevinacee(A): They will pay the price, but it won't be as soon as some fans woul like. No one will be fired after this season unless it is totally horrific.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lando(Q): I am not as down on Jue as other people have been. Is Jue at FS and McCree at SS a real possibility?
kevinacee(A): Yeah, Jue has been hurt two seasons in row. Either one can play either position. In their defense, the SS and FS are not all that different.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
miamiboltfan(Q): What do you sense the players feel about Norv?
kevinacee(A): Players know it's ultimately on them, and they have enough veterans who are professional and who want to win a ring before their career is finished. Privately, some look at Norv's record and wonder "Why this guy over Marty?"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Geno(Q): You often used a statistic about Donnie Edwards making tackles downfield. I've never heard of such a statistic before. Was that from A.J. trying to discredit Donnie?
kevinacee(A): All I was trying to do was show the value of Edwards' tackles and point out that Smith thought Matt Wilhelm or another LB could make the same ones. Those stats were not from A.J. By the way, the stat was "well donwfield" and I clarified that to be 7 or more yards beyond the line of scrimmage. That said, they will miss Donnie for a while.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
boriqua0729(Q): Do you believe the Bolts will go after a wide receiver in the upcoming draft? If so, is Kevin McCardell pretty much out of here anyway?
kevinacee(A): Keenan's cap number is $3.2 mil in 2007, an awful lot for a No.4 receiver, which I am told he will be, at best. I think they'll release him. He won't be happy as a No.4. I am led to believe they are looking at a safety and receiver in the first two rounds. But picking 30th and 62nd is a little tricky. Remember the last time they picked 30th they got Sammy Davis. They want to make sure the safety or receiver available to them at that time is worth the pick.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
marco(Q): is dielman as good as gone? does aj draft a guard?
kevinacee(A): they draft an o lineman on the first day. i'd say that's for sure. i am told dielman will take trips to other teams this weekend. i still can't believe the chargers don't get something done with him. he's awesome. his teammates will be in shock if he leaves.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
miamiboltfan(Q): Will the Chargers go after a WR in FA?
kevinacee(A): if they do, it won't be one that makes your heart skip a beat. i don't think they will. remember, their tight end is their real No.1 receiver, and Vincent Jackson is set to assume the No.1 role. Plus, they're looking at receiver on the first day of the draft.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
casspga(Q): when did the problem between marty and AJ begin?
kevinacee(A): 2003. A series of events. As I have written, it boils down to A.J.'s lack of respect for Marty.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
drewb(Q): Have the Chargers found an offensive coordinator yet?
kevinacee(A): Clarence Shelmon was named last month and will stay. Norv will call plays, but because he is busy as HC, Shelmon will implement game plan throughout the week, consulting with Norv.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steve(Q): Is Vincent Jackson the real deal?
kevinacee(A): In terms of big-play capability -- size and speed and toughness -- for sure. he is young, and you still have to worry about his hands and consistency.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
bowlparty(Q): Why do most of the assistant coaches want to leave? Do you think the ones under their one year contract will leave at the end of this season.
kevinacee(A): I think they are upset at how things have been handled. they are also among the league's lowest-paid assistants. the only way to be in control of their own destiny -- i.e., salary, promotions -- is to be a free agent.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lando(Q): Are Cooper & Wilhelm penciled in as the starters at ILB next Season? How high of a priority is ILB in the draft or free agency?
kevinacee(A): Those guys were both given long-term contracts last year and are penned in as starters, not penciled. still, depth is a concern at LB -- inside and especially outside.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Geno(Q): Your paper has done a great job getting one side of the story from A.J. Why did we have to rely on espn.com to give Marty's side of the story in a chat, instead of hearing Marty's side from the local paper?
kevinacee(A): i think we did give marty's side. then, it was time to move on. marty is not the coach anymore. A.J. is still the general manager. also, there is only so many times we can quote marty saying he doesn't know what the problem was. also, have you seen from any other source the factual account of what really happened? i believe we are the only ones who reported that, ultimately, the final straw was Dean getting fed up with Marty.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SouthPaw(Q): Was there any buzz at the combine about trading Turner? Do you think it will happen?
kevinacee(A): I think the tender A.J. puts on Turner will prevent teams from signing him but that he could still be traded at any time. I have a feeling A.J. wants to keep him as a second back for one more year. That might sound crazy, but consider that they are loaded for a Super Bowl run and most of the teams making noise about wanting Turner dont have that high of picks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
casspga(Q): Any word on phlip rivers ankle
kevinacee(A): he is getting out of his cast today, as far as i know. he is expected to be able to participate (probably carefully) in offseason workouts late next month.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lando(Q): Does Dielman feel disrespected that the Chargers have locked up so many players in the past two seasons but he isn't one of them or is it just a case of he is asking for too much money. Would you say that Phillips got fair market value?
kevinacee(A): disrespected and confused, i am told. he is asking for a lot of money, but it's market value for a guy expected to quickly ascend to one of the league's top guards. he should have been in the pro bowl this year. his "mistake" was in letting the chargers know he wanted to stay. Phillips' deal was more than fair -- but if he continues to be the player he has been the past two seasons, then it was a great deal for the chargers as well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SouthPaw(Q): Will Norv take the offense to even a greater level in 2007? Cam called a lot of plays in certain situations that left me scratching my head.
kevinacee(A): me too. that said, i respected cam a great deal. i do think there will new wrinkles -- more gates? more turner? more jackson?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cam(Q): What's A.J.'s career playoff record?
kevinacee(A): he is very aware it is 0-2.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RyanParker(Q): What can you tell me about Ted Cottrell? His last few coaching jobs havent ended up very well, but Ive also heard that he wasn't running a true 3-4 defense with those teams (Jets, Vikings)?
kevinacee(A): i'm still really learning about him myself. people tend to judge a person based on whether he got fired or won a super bowl without taking into account all the other things that can happen. the terminology the chargers use in their defense is his baby. he is a player's coach. he is as close to wade as the chargers could get at the time -- though he does have a reputation for not being aggressive. that should be a little worrisome for chargers fans, but perhaps he will change now with the weapons he has. that's what a good coach does.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Boltnut(Q): With all the changes, do you think the Bolts will have as good a season as they did last year before self-destructing in the playoffs?
kevinacee(A): i think it is a given they go to the playoffs. self-destructing in the playoffs was marty's bag.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lando(Q): How could A.J. Smith pass up a decent draft pick for Turner? I think he would jump at a #1 or even a high #2, say Detroit at #34. He is important to the offense but either get something for him now or lose him for nothing (except maybe a comp pick) after the season.
kevinacee(A): except maybe have him help them to the Super Bowl this year. Not everything cam be geared toward the future. there are some key players on this team getting up there in age.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
irish19(Q): Kevin - is this norv turner hiring a repeat of when Bobby Beathard fired bobby ross and hired Gilbride?
kevinacee(A): on the surface, it seems that way. one big difference between Beathard and Smith: beathard gave away draft picks, smith's draft picks go to the pro bowl.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RB_fan(Q): If "their tight end is their real No. 1 receiver", then that would be Antonio Gates, not Vincent Jackson, right? Or did I misinterpret your answer?
kevinacee(A): gates is the No.1 choice of the quarterback. Jackson is the No.1 receiver.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RyanParker(Q): What role will Ron Rivera have on defense? Will he solely be a linebacker coach or will his unquestioned coaching credentials give him a larger role as a kind of assistant defensive coordinator?
kevinacee(A): yes, it is my understanding cottrell wil lean on him a little more than a regular assistant. he has some expertise that could help them in certain areas in which they have struggled.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
jboysd1(Q): Will the Chargers target Steinbach or Leonard Dvis if Dielman leaves?
kevinacee(A): either one is a step down but still for big money. i'm not sure that makes sense. that is not aj smith's mo.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lando(Q): I worship at the alter of A.J. but do we value him too much (I don't think so)? Are there other GM's just as good out there? The dumbest move the Chargers could ever do is get rid of him.
kevinacee(A): i'm not sure there has been a gm who has done more in the past four years. there are only a half-dozen players still on this roster that were here in 2003. still, he will be judged by what norv turner does with this team over the next few seasons.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ZEEK(Q): do you think anything is gonna happen with SD Local donnie edwards?
kevinacee(A): he will probably end up in new orleans
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lando(Q): 30 is kind of a blah draft spot. Could you see A.J. trading down a few spots into the 2nd round & picking up an additional pick(s)?
kevinacee(A): i have thought of that. i think aj has too. but he hasn't told me. you are correct about their concern that that spot is "blah."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RyanParker(Q): How well do you think Kurt Schottenheimer with 3-4 experience to his name would have ran the Chargers defense?
kevinacee(A): I have not talked to one person who was not perplexed why marty would consider that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SouthPaw(Q): In a perfect world is Wade the HC & Manusky the DC of the Chargers if Marty is fired right after the season?
kevinacee(A): yes. and that is where the mistake was made. of course, wade would have called the defensive plays just like he will in dallas.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
jboysd1(Q): Are you saying were going to start the season with a rookie guard?
kevinacee(A): No. Definitely not. I am saying it will probably be someone new.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
bluuxx(Q): What is your prediction on the 2007 record?
kevinacee(A): 10-6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
joeberto(Q): do you think ron rivera was hired as backup in case norv turner doesnt do a good job?
kevinacee(A): no. rivera will be gone (on to better things) before norv is fired
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SouthPaw(Q): How do the Chaergs feel about Mruczkowski & Lekkerkerker in the long term?
kevinacee(A): Like them both as backups
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
irishguy(Q): Marty means 4 wins or is the sched that much tougher.
kevinacee(A): schedule is tougher. LT won't score 31 td again. teams don't go 14-2 every year. they will be marked. i will be surprised if they're worse than 10-6 but not surprised if they're better.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
boriqua0729(Q): Which city in San Diego County do you think has the "inside track" on getting the Chargers?
kevinacee(A): i cover the team not the stadium. but i don't know that there is a leader.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
irishguy(Q): Will Cromartie start this year?
kevinacee(A): great question. he deserves to. they want him to. the "problem" is that florence deserves to start as well. he was fantastic last season (until the head butt). they have three corners on the field so often it is sort of moot.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
erick_d(Q): Did the chargers franchise tag anyone this(m. turner)
kevinacee(A): no.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
sdbolt_backer(Q): How is Lt doing after the tragic event that happen his week?
kevinacee(A): don't know. i sent him my condolences. haven't talked to him
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
irish19(Q): What position to you see the chargers drafting with their frist pick in the draft?
kevinacee(A): safety
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
joe(Q): How is Eric Parker doing? I read he was the last player out of the locker room after the dreaded loss.
kevinacee(A): eric took it hard. he is among the hardest workers on the team and the most reliable. he'll bounce back.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RyanParker(Q): What steps are the Chargers taking to ensure they dont become the Southwest version of the Bengals again?
kevinacee(A): i think there are a lot of differences between them. as for what they are doing, foley and kiel will not be back. curry was released.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RB_fan(Q): Why didn't the Chargers franchise tag anyone?
kevinacee(A): who did you want them to franchise? dielman was the only candidate and that would have cost $8 mill.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SouthPaw(Q): OK - Is there any way they are able to keep Florence beyond 2007? He will want starters money. I am not a fan of this discussion but if all 3 corners play well in '07, is there a chance they would move one to safety? Any extension talks for Florence?
kevinacee(A): there have been talks with flo, but it is complicated by the fact he knows he can be a starter elsewhere. ultimately, i think, that will be the reason nothing gets done.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
bensdad(Q): what do you think will happen with the Dielman situation, do you think we will spend the bucks to keep him? And if not who do you so us replacing him with?
kevinacee(A): i have said -- even as both sides seem resigned to him leaving -- that i cant believe they will let him go. he and his agent are willing to work with the chargers, but he is asking for a lot of money.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
sdbolt_backer(Q): Do you think the change in the coaching staff will affect the team?
kevinacee(A): yes, but only moderately. strong character in that locker room.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
fubzeppelin(Q): Kevin, I have heard rimors of Darrel Jackson becoming available from Seattle. If it would only take a third round pick, could you see AJ sending one of our two for him?
kevinacee(A): my understanding is he is not available. if he is, and it will only take a third, maybe. but i don't think so because they think they have pretty good top two receivers already.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
bensdad(Q): Do you see us keeping Turner, if not who will back up LT?
kevinacee(A): the backup RB would probably be Andrew Pinnock. That is his position in the future, not FB. I think AJ keeps Turner for another season unless someone knocks his socks off.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SouthPaw(Q): Was Donnie's contract crying in the locker room blown out of proportion or was it a distraction? I have read that some vets grew tired of it.
kevinacee(A): it wasn't a distraction, but it was real.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RyanParker(Q): Any word on Shawne Merriman after his lackluster playoff performance?
kevinacee(A): what knd of word do you want? he got hurt in the third quarter and would not have played the next week. (knee) they did sort of scheme to keep him away. it happens. he wasn't happy with his performance
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
joe(Q): Will Sproles be 100% by the pre-season or is he already?
kevinacee(A): he came back quickly. he was sprinting by october. he will be 100 percent and ready to try to win back his return job(s)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
robby_c(Q): how much money is deilman asking for?
kevinacee(A): he would probably take $35 mill over six years from chargers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lando(Q): Do the Chargers think Floyd could become a #2 WR one day sooon?
kevinacee(A): if he weren't so brittle. great hands, great speed, 6-foot-5.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
jboysd1(Q): How many rookie LT's have worked out in NFL history... Not many and you probably dont want a 2nd year tackle and rookie guuard starting on Rivers blind side
kevinacee(A): amen.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
miamiboltfan(Q): Will Norv have any say in personnel?
kevinacee(A): more than marty. i wouldn't worry about personnel decisions with AJ in charge.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
bowlparty(Q): are the key offensive players happy with the hiring of Turner?
kevinacee(A): yes. they are happy it is the same offense.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lando(Q): Andre Gurode signed a 6 year 30 million deal with the Cowboys & a $10 mill signing bonus. It that the ballpark Dielman wants?
kevinacee(A): he wants/deserves more.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SouthPaw(Q): What kind of word leaks out to you from the war room on draft day? Are any members of the media allowed in there?
kevinacee(A): i get info on that day only after it happens.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
bensdad(Q): What position if any do you think will be the main focus of the draft?
kevinacee(A): i thinnk day one will bring a safety, a receiver and maybe an OL and DL (they have two third-round picks). I think they'll grab a couple O linemen in the two days. remember, it's going to be tough to make this team for the late-round guys.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
kevinacee Thanks for the questions. Talk to you next time.
