We currently live in Steiner Ranch down towards the end of the "hood" 2 years ago to be close to our kids. Excellent schools and neighborhood. Restaurants and services are starting to build out on 620 but we often end up over on 183, downtown or South Congress for a decent restaurant. A lot of new restaurants popping up constantly by several excellent chefs in the area - many start as a food truck. Traffic sucks at rush hour. Especially during school year as the high school is over by 3M off of 2222 and McNeil. If I leave by 7:00 I can be down town by 7:45 with traffic. With no traffic its a 25 minute commute downtown. With traffic you are looking at 45-60 minutes. If its raining, add 15-30 minutes. There are some road improvements in process to help the traffic at 620 and 2222, and the high school. Major effort is a by pass between 2222 and 620 (south of 2222) but probably won't be built for another couple years. Steiner Ranch is in Leander ISD.
We use to live in the Canyon Vista Middle School/Westwood HS area in Canyon Mesa off of Spicewood Springs Road. RRISD. The Laurel Mountain/Canyon Vista/Westwood combination is considered one of the best in the Austin area for public schools. Westwood and West Lake (Eanes) use to be rated in the top 100 high schools in the country by US News & World Report (bascially rated on AP test participation/performance). Westwood was the first HS in Austin area to have an IB program that is an international program. I think Eanes and Leander might have the IB program now also. This started the attraction of the oriental and mid-east families working in the semi-conductor industry that grew in Austin during the '80s and 90's.
Jester is in AISD - that may or may not matter for you. Avery Ranch might be another area to look at in Northwest area that is a little closer in from Cedar Park.
There isn't a "ring of suburbs" around Austin. You have Round Rock, Leander/Cedar Park that are part of the metro area now but still separate cities. The city keeps "annexing" the neighborhoods (you probably are becoming familiar with MUDs) over time so the "city limits" keep expanding. When you get annexed your taxes go up and your services go down so just be aware if you are looking in a MUD that may eventually become part of the city. Our first home was annexed between the time we signed the purchase order and closed on it.
We moved from MN 17 years ago and was only planning to stay for a couple years but we love it and stayed.
