Awkward Keeper situation (1 Viewer)

I'll try to spin this as a not what should I do for my team, but keep it general as I feel there may be some good stuff to come from this discussion. Mods, if you feel you need to move it to the AC forum, feel free.

In one keeper league I am in, we are required to keep 3 players, but have an optional 4th player we can keep (rookie). You don't have to keep this fourth player and if you so choose to, you can throw him back in the pool of draftable players, and get a pick at the end of the draft as compensation. Obviously, in 99% of the cases, the player you would keep is worth more than that slot, BUT what by keeping this player, you pigeon hole yourself in the draft? For example, if your optional keeper is a low-end QB or TE, you have two choices. The first is to drop him and draft a better second/backup TE/QB. You can also keep this player, but you must either (1) draft a stud for said position to counter the fact that you will rarely play this kept player or (2) draft normally and now waste a roster spot on a third QB/TE (this is much more of a problem in a league with shorter benches).

Has anyone ever run into this dilema or am I just overthinking things? I would hate to keep this player and have my hand forced to take a player at his position out of the gate, as it will most likely impact the talent I am able to get in subsequent rounds.

The answer is: throw Sanchez back into the pool.EDIT: obviously I'm just guessing because you are a Jets fan. But seriously, if you don't have a bench deep enough to carry potential dead weight then I would absolutely throw away a 3rd QB or TE that probably won't ever get off the bench.

My general thought process on keepers (and one which is shared by Tefertiller here and here) is:

If I can draft any potential keeper at or later than where I would keep him, throw him back!

Let's use Sanchez as an example (as he has already been brought up). His overall ADP is around 123, 10th round in a 12-team league. I WILL NOT keep Sanchez in any round before the 10th, and likely not in the 10th because who knows who might fall to you. Now, if I can keep him in the 12th or 13th, sure. He might not get much/any playing time, but who would at that draft position.

So, there's my $0.02. Hope it helps.

My vote is that you're over-thinking things.

Write down the roster you think you're most likely to end up with if you keep him.

Write down the roster you think you're most likely to end up with if you don't keep him.

Decide which roster you like better and go with that choice.

That does help, but the bottom line is, if I really am not too hot on said player, do i want to keep him. I am more willing to take a flyer on a 6th RB or WR than I am on a 3rd QB or TE, regarless of the value. Basically, i would be picking the 1st or 2nd pick in round 17 (we only have 16 rounds), but it is the difference between getting value (my keeper) and wasting a roster spot...or having my hand forced if I end up with a Sanchez-like QB2 to take a QB in round 1 (which is really like round 4 given our keepers).

Good idea...I think I will give that a shot.
