Veteran WR Hakim signs one-year deal with Lions
September 12, 2006
ALLEN PARK, MICHIGAN (TICKER) -- Az-Zahir Hakim hopes that a reunion with Mike Martz leads to a career resurgence.
Hakim on Tuesday agreed to a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions that reunites the veteran wide receiver with one of the league's top offensive minds.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
The 29-year-old Hakim played for the Lions from 2002-04 before spending last season with New Orleans. However, the speedster enjoyed his best years with St. Louis from 1999-2001, when he averaged 43 receptions and five touchdowns in helping the Rams reach a pair of Super Bowls.
Hakim's coach with the Rams, Martz currently is the offensive coordinator with the Lions, who struggled to move the ball in last Sunday's season-opening 9-6 defeat to Seattle.
"(Martz) is an offensive guru who definitely knows the talent that's around him," Hakim said. "I'm just blessed and thankful for another opportunity to get back in the Honolulu Blue and also be reunited with Mike Martz."
Likewise, Detroit hopes to get a boost from Hakim, who had 34 catches for 489 yards and two touchdowns for New Orleans last season.
The 5-10, 185-pounder has 299 career receptions for 4,044 yards and 28 scores in 104 games with the Rams, Lions and Saints.
