Azodicarbonamide (1 Viewer)

I'm not a health nut or a crazy but we sure it a lot of chemicals. I wonder if any of our modern diseases are caused by this type of stuff.

Not saying it's good to consume it, but we are made of chemicals. Everything we eat is made of chemicals. azodicarbonamide is a combination of hydrogen, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen. Just because it has a complicated chemical name, doesn't automatically make it dangerous. I would be more concerned about ethyl carbamate/urethane. It naturally occurs breads and alcohols and it does seem to cause cancer.ETA: urethane is a byproduct of the azodicarbonamide. Perhaps you should stop drinking as well?

So does this. And roboto, google is your friend...

It just got my attention when Subway announced that they would no longer be using it in their breads. Then I found out our local bakery uses it to so I fired off an e-mail stating my displeasure. But, if you're cool with eating chemicals that increase your risk of cancer, then kindly disregard this public service announcement.

and the response from the bakery...

Hi Franknbeans- this is an additive that has been used by many bakeries in US.Like many we have become aware of the problem with this additive. We have been working

with our ingredient supplier and all our formulations will no longer have Azodicarbonimide starting March 15.

Thank you for being a long time customer.

I think the opposite. I know a lot of health-conscious, organic-only, no chemical, I only shop at Whole Foods hippie types, and they're always sick. Seem to come down with every disease their is. But the azodicarbonamide loving, junk food eating, beer-swilling types have great immune systems from getting regular use and seem to never get ill.

Sounds like some iron clad evidence right there.

Great article on the reality of the situation.
I shared this. My wife really needs to read this. She takes just about every food freakout post as gospel, doesn't check her sources, and immediately runs to tell me why [insert food I like] is horrible and going to kill me. I've told her that if it does not come directly from a licensed MD I don't care and don't want to hear about it. I still do, but this article shows why at least in this case we should beware of the hype.

Love me some yoga mat.
It's not like they're grinding up yoga mats and putting it in the food. Just something that goes into yoga mat production. Don't see what the big deal is. Water is used in yoga mat production too, and I have no problem drinking it. Ford uses soybeans to make the foam in their car seats. Soybeans are used as an engine fuel and as a hydraulic fluid, and can be made into solvents and industrial cleaners. Doesn't scare me away from edamame.

Let's pick some random chemical that can kill in extreme doses and then go on a social media rampage inciting bored moms into an uproar. We'll make sure that we never talk about the concentration of said chemical in the foods being consumed. We'll just make sure that we note that it's something else random that you wouldn't want to eat, like a carburetor. Lastly, provide a link to a shaky article that has lots of big scientific words glosses over the key details. Here, I'll try.

"Put down that green tea, unless of course you like DYING. Green tea contains theophylline, a CHEMICAL that causes diarhhea, seizures and arrhythmias. The government has known about the dangers of theophylline and doesn't want you to stop drinking tea because of LINKS WITH THE CHINESE."

Did you guys know there are ions of extremely reactive metal elements in numerous foods and beverages, even ones we feed little kids? In high enough doses they can cause kidney and heart failure.

In all seriousness though, it isn't a bad thing to better control the concentration that people do consume of it.

If I remember correctly, he changed his last name to Bakersman after high school. His birth name was Bill Dough so you can imagine what middle school was like for him.

I would vote to ban dihydrogen minoxide. Overdose can be fatal in 5 minutes! But intake is completely unregulated, you can go into any grocery store a buy a fatal dose for less than $1. It's found in cancer cells. It's the primary component of acid rain. Stuff is killer, man.

Penn and Teller did it better.
