Back Up Importance (1 Viewer)

Let's take a league where you start 1,2,3,1,1,1 No IDP. Roster looks like 2,4,5,2,2,2.

With the history of free agent picks doing well for WR maybe more then RB's as an example, rank from most important to least important for back up drafting.

Mine would be

QB2

RB3

RB4

WR4

TE2

Def2

K2

WR5

I just think the last WR probably wont be on my team by the end of the year and I would rather sure up my TE, K, DEF 1st.

Excluding incredible value peeking out of course.

I'm assuming this is a redraft. and 12 teams

First off, I would not personally go into any draft with a blueprint that tells me what player position to take at what draft spot. I believe you need to be flexible enough to draft where value presents itself. For instance, I might (and probably would) draft a RB3 before I drafted a WR2 or WR3 (not to mention a QB1 or TE1) if there was value there. (Assuming a RB falls that you like)

THis all assumes you don't HAVE to draft a full starting lineup before you start drafting backups.

Also, do you HAVE to draft 2 Ks and 2 Ds? If not I'd only take one and get an extra RB or WR. But I'm assuming you have to take exactly 2 Ks and 2 Ds.

So after all that I'd rank backups like this:

RB3

RB4

WR4

WR5

QB2

TE2

Def2

K2

RBs are where the value will be, get 4 good one as soon as possible. Before you fill out the other starting positions if possible.

Don't sleep on the WRs though, get 5 good ones there too. Also before you fill out any other positions if you can.

If you can I'd make my first 9 picks RBs and WRs, then get the 2 best remaining QBs, and then the 2 best TEs and finally D and K. OK, maybe get a D before your 2nd TE depending on scoring. (obviously this assumes Gates or Manning don't fall to you at great value. Again, you need to adapt to how your draft evolves)

If there are 12 teams that means that only 24 QBs and TEs will be taken. There will be 8 starting QBs (at least) on the waiver wire every week. There will not be any starting RBs. or decent WRs. Get the RBs and WRs first.

Personally, I see no value in a back up kicker. Or a D. Get a decent starter and (only if you have to) a backup with a different bye week. THat's all you need.

It's going to depend in good part on your early picks, especially at QB1 and to a lesser extent, TE1.K2 is last, and D/ST2 is second to last. If you've got Peyton Manning, your QB2 isn't very important. If you've got Eli Manning, your QB2 is a bit more important. if your QB1 is Drew Blesoe or Mike Vick, then your QB2 is real important.

The same idea applies at TE. If you've got Gates or Gonzo, you don't care much about your TE2. If you're rolling with KW2, then you better think carefully about who your TE2 would be. But you can usually pick up a decent TE off the WW, so I wouldn't rank it too high.

RB3

RB4

WR4

WR5

TE2

D/ST2

K2

With QB2 ranking anywhere from between RB3/4 on that list to between WR4/5.

My little rule is this: When in doubt draft a RB.

So in other words draft your RB3 and RB4 before WR3/4 or QB2 or TE/K/Def unless there is great value or someone that you weren't expecting slides to you.

As for kickers, I try not to touch one until my QBs/RBs/WRs rosters are full. Usually don't sniff at 2 kickers until final 4 rounds of draft, unless scoring is crazy loaded (which I've never seen)

edit - Of course this assumes standard scoring/ppr leagues where scoring has been skewed to take away from the RB.
