Backup QB's in a 2 QB league (1 Viewer)

I'm playing in two 2 QB leagues this year and am planning on spending most of my cap money on starters. This leaves me the question of whom I should be considering for a backup. Somewhere between 40-45 QB's were picked up in last year's auctions, so hoping for someone on the waiver wire isn't really an option.

Obviously I'd love to grab someone in the Kolb/Fitzpatrick/McNabb range on the cheap, even someone like Kyle Orton if I had to, but I suspect that these type of players will still be considered "starters" by a few teams and are therefore not going to come cheap.

Out of the following players, which would you consider the most viable backups?

David Garrad

Matt Hasselbeck

Chad Henne

Colt McCoy

Alex Smith

(Washington QB)

Alternately, if my QB's have late bye weeks, I could also consider a couple of "might start later on" players:

Andy Dalton

Blaine Gabbert

Colin Kaepernick

Tim Tebow (though he'll probably be too expensive due to fandom)

Vince Young

I'd take McCoy as my #2 pretty easily. I'd be surprised if he doesn't start in a 2 QB league. Hass would be a cheap #2 if you spend $ elsewhere too and I'd take him in a heartbeat as my backup. VY is a lottery ticket but could pay off big

By "Backup", do you mean your 2nd QB or your 3rd?

I assume you mean as your #3 QB, as your #1 and #2 will be starting, but just wanted to clarify.

In my start 2 QB leagues, I have Romo and Cutler as my starter in one, with the SEA and MIA QB duos to battle for my #3 spot. I also have Beck on the backburner on the off chance he lights it up, and Ponder for the future. Of course, it is 55 man rosters, so I can afford to have 7 guys at the QB position.

For my other league, it is Romo and Cutler again, but I have Garrard and T-jackson there to battle for my #3.

Just take as good of QBs as you can find. The HARDEST position to get after the season starts, especially in a 2-QB league.

I actually like Grossman this year for the price. He looked pretty good in preseason. Put up decent FF stats at the end of last season. Beck ha has a hurt shoulder, groin and reports say he looks bad. Grossman taking a leadership role more this season.

McCoy should be solid if you can get him cheap.

Yes, I'm talking about my QB3.

Both leagues only have 18 player rosters and I'd prefer to load up on WR and RB, so I'm only likely to be carrying three QB's total (although I could make an argument for VY + backup if I get Vick).

So it seems the sentiment is to take a "traditional" backup, rather than a flyer?

I would take the QB that you think will start all year. Personally, I'd go with Hasselbeck.

take a last round flyer on Matt Moore ......... I don't think Henne is it in Miami, take a late round flyer on Tebow too in case a Denver trade happens or Orton injury

In a start 2 QB league with 18 man rosters, he needs his 3rd QB to be a starter. A player with upside like a Tebow won't do much good as a 3rd QB during bye weeks if he is on the bench.

On you first list I like McCoy best. He's going to be put in situations that play to his strengths.

Whenever I've been in 2QB leagues, I typically draft the actual backup to my #1 QB and try to find a good lower level guy for a bye week. I think that in a league where so much value is on the quarterbacks, it's worth four spots.

To actually answer the question, I would go for Alex Smith if he's available.
