Bad Corners/Safeties (1 Viewer)

I'm not sure if anything brilliant will come of this, but hopefully we can gain some collective insight here.

For those watching full games or homers...which DBs stood out as being really awful this weekend? Whether there were consistently blown assignments, bad on certain coverages, (slants, go routes, out posts, etc), slow, whatever. I don't just want the highlight plays but near misses too, such as instances where you noticed a play could have been made with the right throw or had the receiver been able to make the grab but came up empty. We focus a lot on the 'Revis, Asomugha matchups vs stud WR' kind of thing, but I'm just trying to get a feel for some sneaky one week plays for a less than top end fantasy WR. Call it 'Horrible DB vs normally mediocre WR' information.

Like I said, may be useful, may not be, depending on the level of info provided here. I would start off but circumstances had me unable to watch a full game this week...I guess thats why I would love to keep a thread like this going all season.

Updated to summarize thread...(I apologize for formatting, will have to come up with a better way going forward) Also, where there was info, I tried to match the players based on right corner, left corner etc. If it's a safety mainly I tried to find out who it might impact if they're double covering. Since this is new territory for me, I assume most of that kind of info will come with time and data.

Player PO TM (Opp - Possible impacted players)

Terence Newman LCB Dal (SF - Braylon Edwards)

Ronde Barber RCB TB (Min - Bernard Berrian, Jenkins)

Jarret Bush LCB GB (Car - Brandon Lafell ,Legedu Naanee)

Nolan Carroll RCB Mia (Hou- Jacoby Jones)

Jim Leonard SS NYJ (Jax - Marcedes Lewis, Mike Thomas)

Mike Jenkins RCB Dal (SF - John Morgan, Crabtree)

Tim Jennings LCB Chi (NO - Moore, Henderson, Meachem)

Donte Whitner SS SF (Dal - Mile Austin Jason Witten)

B Meriweather FS Chi (NO - Meachem, Henderson, Moore)

Bryant Mcfadden LCB - Pitt (Sea - Rice, D. Baldwin)

Alan Ball RCB Dal (SF - Morgan, Crabtree)

Brandon Browner RCB Sea (Pitt - Wallace, H Ward)

Brian Dawkins SS Den (Cinn - Gresham)

Deangelo Hall LCB Wash (Ari - Fitz kinda pointless info here)

Roman Harper SS NO (Chi - Knox, Bennett)

Abram Elam SS Dal (SF - Vernon Davis, Morgan)

Chris Gamble LCB Car (GB - Jordy Nelson, Jennings)

If healthy, Bryant McFadden(or, if not healthy, William Gay). He's not good in coverage, but he's a strong tackler so Pittsburgh will roll him out there opposite Taylor every week that he's able to play. Teams attack the guy opposite Taylor with alacrity.

Not only does McFadden pretty consistently get beat man-on-man, but neither does he react well in zone. While he may not give up a horde of big plays or TDs over the course of the season, he will go through periods where he give up catches in droves.

Brandon Browner, Seattle. This was the guy who left Oregon State after his sophomore year in 2004, only to go undrafted. He managed to find a job in the CFL and then shockingly got a tryout with the Seahawks 6 years later, then (even more shocking) won the starting CB job.

His size (6-4) is tantalizing, but he's just not very good at coverage. He was called for multiple penalties in Sunday's game. I won't be surprised if he's demoted or cut before Seattle's BYE week, but in the meantime I'd bump up any WR that faces the Seahawks.

Roman Harper/Brian Dawkins/Deangelo Hall/terrence newman/rhonde barber(still good covering slot altho)/chris gamble/abram elam off the top of my head are living on past or fantasy glory.

 Thats what I'm talking about...Good stuff guys. Re-watching the Thursday game and it seems like Aaron Rodgers made Patrick Robinson his girlfriend for the evening. They made a point to go at him no matter who he was covering. The Pack obviously had some video on this guy they liked and wanted to take advantage of it. Other teams will pick up on that going forward.I'm gonna cobble together the list of DB's here and hopefully add to it throughout the season. Each week I'll try to see if there is a noticable bump to any off-brand WR they're matched up on. If a solid trend starts to appear, I'll be able to go back and look at each of their games in more detail. Maybe by end of season we might have some interesting data to pore over.

Dave - that would be awesome to put together. My only request would be to identify the teams with these DBs. I know where most but not all the DBs are playing. With the lockout I think a couple of them were picked up by new teams and I probably missed it amongst the other 1000 FAs being signed in a weeks time.

If Tramon Williams is out for GB.

Could see a lot of Jarrett Bush and Pat Lee on the field. As a Packer fan...its a cause for some uneasy nerves.

They will probably keep Shields on Smith though.

When Smith or Davis were out for Miami Nolan Carroll was used and abused by Deion Branch.

Jet safeties Jim Leonard, Erik Smith and Brodney Pool are all pretty poor in coverage and have allowed TEs and slot WRs to dominate against the Jets.

On Monday night Dawkins was coming out on many passing downs, and he was all over the place when he was in. Hes certainly not the player he once was, but he's still got a little left in the tank.

Deangelo Hall (WAS)- he gambles a lot and he has the worst safety in football protecting him deep..REED DOUGHTY.

bears secondary in general is pretty horrible, but then again i'm sure everyone knows that
9 times out of 10 Tillman is good. Jennings, on the other hand, will blow his coverage and think he has safety help over the top when he doesn't giving a chance for a long TD. And yea, none of their safeties can cover worth a damn. Urlacher makes up for that against TEs up the seam though.

Yeah. Slot receivers and tight ends should be money against the Jets.

:goodposting: McFadden is awful and Gay isn't much better. Ike Taylor (on the right side) is pretty good but he rarely gets tested because it is such easy pickings on the left. The Steelers either need to get McFadden some help or get him out of there. Personally I would rather roll the dice with Keenan Lewis, Curtis Brown or Cortez Allen.

Would've said the same re: Chris Gamble, prior to week 1. But he was on Larry Fitzgerald most of the game, and did an excellent job (Fitz: 3-62). Maybe he had help there, but I was stunned. Let's see how he does on Greg Jennings, this week.

Benny Sapp.

Edit: My fault. The Fins released him after the Monday night game.

I don't have a particular player to add at this point but just would like to suggest that as these recommendations start piling up maybe the OP can do a summary list in the first post. Just a thought - always easy to suggest someone else do work :)

Good idea. Updated my post.Going forward, I'll have to put this on a spreadsheet, blog or something that is easier on the eyes and a bit more user friendly.

Agree with GB here on all fronts.McFadden is terrible and he got picked on relentlessly the past few games; Rodgers picked on him in SB and Flacco went exclusively to his side last week as Boldin had a nice game and Lee Evans had 0 catches (who Ike Taylor was covering). Only positive is that McFadden is a decent tackler, as some have already mentioned.Randall Gay is more of the same, slightly better but still not good. He's very quick but is often out of position and is not a sure tackler at all. He is the defacto nickel CB as he is the most seasoned vet in the group, and LeBeau tends to play veterans/incumbents unless a player goes lights out and forces his hand. Case in point, 3rd yr player Ziggy Hood was extremely good in place of Aaron Smith last year when he went down w/ a torn bicep, YET 37 yr old A. Smith is still starting over him this year and getting much more snaps.Keenan Lewis is the guy I'd like the Steelers to throw in here. Granted he's feast or famine, as there are times he makes the biggest bonehead play you ever saw and then on the very next play he makes an incredible read and makes the INT or deflects the ball, but I like what he has to offer and has the most upside. Started w/ 1st team a few games this preseason when McFadden was mercifully hurt and looked capable of starting (for us). This is his 3rd yr in the same defense so he should be able to step in and not get lost in LeBeau's scheme. Much rather have someone like him starting than McFadden, who is shaky at best, makes 0 big plays and when he is in seems like he's always playing injured.Curtis Brown sure looked good in limited action, but that was in preseason and he is rather green for LeBeau's defense (Rookie, and even missed a few preseason games this year). This is the same for Cortez Allen, who missed even more action and obviously isnt anywhere nearready for full time action (although I think he is the better long-term project for the team, reminds me of Ike Taylor w/ better hands)

Did we watch the same game? Yeah, he had a couple calls for being physical, but he was pretty solid. One call both he and Edwards where holding each others jerseys. Looked to me that the 9ers started exploiting Trufant once they couldn't do much Browners way.Speaking of terrible ex-Seahawks, bump anyone going up against Kelly Jennings (traded to CIN).
