Baltimore a passing team this year? (1 Viewer)

Playcalling was more towards RUNNING last year due to Flacco learning the QB position. With now a year under his belt and with the progression he's made... could we see a shift in philosphy this year from the Ravens? Last year they passed 42% of the time.

There has to be a method to the madness...or am I being illogical? 42% to 60% this preseason is a significant shift.

Cam Cameron called passing plays 59% of the time his year as OC in Miami... just sayin..

If they do pass more, Rice gets a huge bump in PPR as well as the other WRs.

I think they'll pass more but I don't think that % is any way indicative of how they'll be in the regular season. I think they want to open things up and pass more than they did last year but they won't be a "passing" team by any stretch. They are a run team that plays good defense.

He did catch 8 balls in about a half of play the other day.

I doubt they pass 60% of the time, but at least 50% is a reasonable expectation. People have been increasingly excited about Ray Rice all August. QB has more experience and the defense is another year older (Lewis) and lost its coordinator, so there are some indicators that the offense may be opened up a little.

I'm not buying it. Especially given the division/waether they play in. I think they'll pass more than they did a year ago(how could they not?), but with those WRs I can't believe he's going to start having them chuck it at a 60% clip. Closer to a 50/50 split will certainly not be a surprise, though. I still think they'll run more than they throw.(All that said, as a Steeler fan, I'd be happy as a pig in sh@#$ if Cam would like to drop Joe back 60% of the time for those two games. "Mr. Flacco, allow us to introduce you to Mr. Turf. Mr. Turf, this is Joe Flacco. You'll be seeing him again." :lmao: )

It's my opinion that they're just using preseason to practice the weakest part of their game. While they may indeed show a small uptick in passing once the games start, they're still a team built to stifle you with defense and bring the thunder out of the backfield.

That was my exact thought as well. They are just slinging it around a bit to see if any of these receivers can actually catch the ball. Makes it easier on the staff to figure out the pretty rough depth chart at WR.

Yup. Not much more to it.

One of the biggest concerns last year is that Joe got 'tunnel vision' too often and focused on his first read - primarily Mason. Being a rookie QB and just beginning to learn the playbook when he was thrust into the starting role had a lot to do with that. But even during the playoff stretch, Flacco did not show the knack for looking off receivers and moving through the reads efficiently.

Harbaugh and Cameron look to change that this season and the time to work on that is the pre-season. So the Ravens have been throwing the ball quite a bit. This will change once the season begins but the lessons will be there for Flacco and hopefully he will be able to see more of the field and process the routes of his receivers better in order to make the correct read of the defense. I would expect the run to dominate early and as long as the Ravens have the lead they will continue to pound the ball, but it is nice to know that if the team falls behind in a game and needs to rely on Flacco's arm that he is ready to throw the ball as well.

A lot of their passing has just been extended handoffs. So in that way I do think they will throw more, but they won't be a vertical, air it out team just yet.

What are people saying about Oher so far?
Early reports are good. He shoved the Skins around pretty well in the preseason opener and did a solid job against Peppers this past week. I'm thinking the Ratbirds have two talented young OTs who will be big assets in the years to come.
