Baltimore Ravens news at 12pm EST (1 Viewer)

I don't condone players taking a whack at their coaches head but if there was ever a guy that needed one it would be Billick.

Maybe he feels like he needs to try and regain the cranky coach crown from Denny Green after last night's tirade.

As per PFT:FASSEL OUT AS RAVENS OFFENSIVE COORDINATORA league source tells us (and a reader advises us that there's a radio report to this effect) that the Ravens have fired offensive coordinator Jim Fassel.More to come.

Hmmmm special announcement? Gotta be something to do with his coaching staff. Someone is getting promoted. I like the Rick Neuheisel as OC suggestion.

He's announcing that Boller can now throw the ball, on his knees, through the uprights from the opponent's 45, as opposed to only midfield. He thinks that now it will REALLY make a difference on Sundays.

I seem to remember a team or two being interested in Fassel as a HC at some point in the not to recent past... did I make that up?? If not - what teams wanted to talk to Fassel?

Sounds like the players were unhappy with the O.

Receiver Derrick Mason has become increasingly frustrated with the lack of offense this season. Running back Jamal Lewis voiced his anger over a season-low nine carries despite a season-high 4.6 yards per carry.

Billick said the Ravens removed Lewis late in the third quarter because they had previously planned to get Mike Anderson into the game at that point. By the time the Ravens got the ball back, they trailed by nine points midway through the fourth quarter and needed to abandon the run to play catch-up.

"I was frustrated with his lack of carries," Billick said. "We need to run the ball more. But I don't know if there were a lot of options in that regard. I'd love to get the ball in Jamal's hands a lot more, too."

Billick declined to talk specifically about the frustrations of Lewis and Mason, but he indicated he would address these matters privately.

"There's no upside to responding to the frustrations of a player," Billick said. "The biggest mistake is not that someone spoke out of frustration. The biggest mistake a team can make is someone else responding to it. I'm not going to do it. It's a frustrating time. I'm not going to exacerbate the situation by embarrassing them and hope they understand that we want the same thing."

These days, nearly all of the Ravens agree the team needs this bye, giving everyone some time away from the problems surfacing from their two-game losing streak.

The players were given off after yesterday's team meeting and won't have to reconvene until Sunday.

"Luckily we got a bye week and I get to forget about football for a week," Mason said. "I'll be with my family and rest. It's really frustrating for me. Hopefully, I can go home, see my kids and they'll make me laugh a little bit. Right now, football is not fun."

Ya know...I'd like to see Fassel in Oakland. His hard @-S-$ persona seems like it would fit perfect there. He's gotta be better than Shell!! Right?

Interesting approach. Fire the OC after giving up over 400 yards (350+ passing).
I think the assumption is that Neuheisel can design scoring plays that don't involve bouncing the ball off of another player on the way to the receiver.

I don't remember which teams, but there were definitely a few interested a few years back. IIRC, Fassel was kind of playing it coy, and wound up missing out on opportunities that were subsequently filled.

Guess you missed the sarcasm. :bag:

shell isn't OC Fassel's a pretty good coach. I'm not sure why I haven't seen him applying for HC jobs. His Giant teams were sometimes frustratingly bad and sometimes way better than expected(Supe). He's also a close friend of Billick's so I bet this was a difficult move for Brian

Shortly after being fired by the Giants there was but he wanted a year off, then wanted to stay involved and took an almost consultant role with Balt.

With Billick's gigantic ego, it's probably not as hard as we think.

what about the Raider OC - the guy who was running a bed & breakfast last year? Would Fassel really be much of an upgrade over him?

 If it's not clear now that when he was succesful with the Giants it was a result of Sean Payton and John Fox he will further prove it with another ####ty performance as a coach.

Sure, most coaches would. Fassel established himself as an O cooridinator and became coach of the Giants. That job is probably simple to him now. The Ravens can't run and keeping Lewis was the wrong move. McNair's hurt and Boller stinks. I saw the pinball throws and catches but even still 3 TDs is probably a high for Boller. I don't see that he was the prob in Balt at all. If anything, the GM goofed. I'd have kept Lewis probably but it's still a mistake and that line needed help it didn't get. When Fassel was with Arizona, old Boomer did pretty well. Post-drinking Kerry looked best under him. I could see Davis liking Fassel.

yeah don't give him credit for them learning under him

Art Shell had this to say about the previous quote:

With the trade deadline today, it's gotta be a trade. You'd think right? If it's a trade other teams would be announcing something too.

:goodposting: Having Payton and Fox as your coordinators would make even Thiesman look good

 The local radio guys are talking to reporters and "Fassel gone" is all but official. The only intrigue seems to be whether Neuheisel takes over the offense or whether Billick is going to call plays.

Good thing that hack coach from New England had Charlie Weis and Romeo Crenell on his staff.

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Fassel has resigned, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported Tuesday.

The team will make the announcement official at a noon news conference.

A veteran NFL coach, Fassel was the New York Giants head coach for seven seasons, from 1997 through 2003. His teams posted a 60-56-1 record and won two division titles, made the playoffs three times, and went to Super Bowl XXXV in 2000.

Fassel has also been an assistant coach with the Giants (1991-92), Denver (1993-94), Oakland (1995), Arizona (1996) and Baltimore, starting in 2004.

Hi Jim. Just wanted to let you know that Rick here is going to put together our game plan and I'm going to call the plays from now on. Do you want to resign, or do I need to fire you.
