Receiver Derrick Mason has become increasingly frustrated with the lack of offense this season. Running back Jamal Lewis voiced his anger over a season-low nine carries despite a season-high 4.6 yards per carry.
Billick said the Ravens removed Lewis late in the third quarter because they had previously planned to get Mike Anderson into the game at that point. By the time the Ravens got the ball back, they trailed by nine points midway through the fourth quarter and needed to abandon the run to play catch-up.
"I was frustrated with his lack of carries," Billick said. "We need to run the ball more. But I don't know if there were a lot of options in that regard. I'd love to get the ball in Jamal's hands a lot more, too."
Billick declined to talk specifically about the frustrations of Lewis and Mason, but he indicated he would address these matters privately.
"There's no upside to responding to the frustrations of a player," Billick said. "The biggest mistake is not that someone spoke out of frustration. The biggest mistake a team can make is someone else responding to it. I'm not going to do it. It's a frustrating time. I'm not going to exacerbate the situation by embarrassing them and hope they understand that we want the same thing."
These days, nearly all of the Ravens agree the team needs this bye, giving everyone some time away from the problems surfacing from their two-game losing streak.
The players were given off after yesterday's team meeting and won't have to reconvene until Sunday.
"Luckily we got a bye week and I get to forget about football for a week," Mason said. "I'll be with my family and rest. It's really frustrating for me. Hopefully, I can go home, see my kids and they'll make me laugh a little bit. Right now, football is not fun."
