Cowboys toying with package that puts Felix Jones, Marion Barber on field together

Jerry Jones picked Felix Jones (no relation) over Rashard Mendenhall in large part because they thought the Razorback back was a better complement for Marion "The Barbarian" Barber.

Felix's primary offensive role as a rookie will be a change-of-pace back. But the Cowboys also plan to put him on the field with Barber on occasion.

Barber and Felix lined up in the backfield together several times during today's workout. Barber lined up in front of the offset I with Felix starting at tailback and motioning out wide.

"I'm very comfortable with it," said Felix, who played some slot receiver at Arkansas. "Right now, they're just getting me introduced to it. They're just showing me some of the things that I can do in the future."

Felix didn't put up big receiving numbers at Arkansas, which had a poor passing games. But the Cowboys' scouts and coaches saw a back with good hands and route-running ability who could blossom as a receiver in the pros.

Rotoworld speculates: "It might be a third-down look that could threaten defenses with Jones' speed and still keep MBIII in to block. Jones is unlikely to be asked to pick up many blitzes as a rookie. He may also motion out wide from this formation."

It will be interesting to see how they use the two, but I can definitely see a 2-backfield formation. Jones should see a lot of receptions out of this. I sorta reminds me also of how the Saints used Bush as a decoy on short yardage up-the-middle runs.

Seems like for years every first round back who wasnt expected to take over immediately was toyed in the same backfield with the other back during camp. Other than a handful of receptions that might have otherwise gone to a receiver, it doesnt help the fantasy production of either back. It does give a defense an occassional fit but the media will make it sound like both backs are touching the ball at the same time. Remember when Marcus Allen played in the same backfield with Bo Jackson? It was all the announcers could talk about was how unstoppable that backfield was. In reality, it wasnt any better than putting either one with a real fullback. It just sounds better than calling out the name of an underappreciated fullback. I've been over the duo back talk for a long time now.

I always get a kick out of stuff like that.

felix will be a better compliment than julius ever was. the past few years mbiii was undervalued and a steal in drafts. this year it changes as the value will be felix in the 10th round instead of mbiii in the mid first.
