Phillies reportedly persuing a Tejada for Abreu deal. Baltimore wants a pitcher added in, and Philly would ask Tejada to play third. OR, they might flip Tejada to Chicago for Mark Prior.

If the D-Rays can get Reed for Gathright, why don't they just do it themse.....ah nevermind. That would make too much sense.

Koskie to the Brewers for a used jockstrap.. :bag:

MILWAUKEE -- Unable to meet his free agent price tag a year ago, the Brewers swung a surprising trade late Friday night to acquire veteran third baseman Corey Koskie from the Blue Jays for a Minor League pitcher. The Brewers, who will decide whether to start Koskie at third base over Bill Hall, parted with right-hander Brian Wolfe in their second trade with Toronto in less than a month. Koskie, a 32-year-old left-handed hitter, is a career .277 hitter in eight Major League seasons. He became expendable after the Blue Jays traded for slugging third baseman Troy Glaus, giving the team a surplus of corner infielders. Koskie is reportedly signed for two more years at a guaranteed $11.5 million, but the Jays picked up a portion of that cost. "Having flexibility is key because when these opportunities come up, you can take advantage," said Brewers general manager Doug Melvin, who declined to say how much of Koskie's contract will be paid by Toronto. The Associated Press reported this week that Toronto was willing to pay as much as $3 million to expedite a trade sending him back to Minnesota, but the Twins declined. Melvin followed those reports, and when Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi called earlier in the week to gauge Milwaukee's interest, both sides began negotiating. "This is a player we showed interest in when he was a free agent, and we were one of the teams he was interested in at the time," Melvin said. "Now we were able to get him at the right price." Koskie ended up signing a three-year, $17 million deal with the Blue Jays after playing his first 10 professional seasons in the Twins organization. He earned $2.5 million in 2005 and is set to make $5.25 million 2006 and $5.75 million in 2007. The original deal also included a $6.5 million club option for 2008 with a $500,000 buyout. According to the Toronto Sun, should Koskie amass 600 plate appearances in either 2006 or '07 -- or combine for at least 1,200 over that span -- it would cause his 2008 option to vest. In 2005, Koskie was limited to 97 games by a broken right thumb that required surgery to repair ligament damage. He batted .249 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs. "The more I get over the initial shock, the more and more I am excited about it," said Koskie. "Last year during free agency, I called my agent and said 'What about Milwaukee? I hear good things.'" Koskie was also surprised by the trade's timing. "I just didn't think anything would happen until closer to Spring Training," he said. Melvin also worked out a trade with Ricciardi at the Winter Meetings last month that sent first baseman Lyle Overbay to Toronto for pitchers Dave Bush and Zach Jackson and outfielder Gabe Gross. Koskie's presence calls into question the role of Hall, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2005 while playing three infield positions. At the Winter Meetings, Brewers manager Ned Yost said he expected Hall to be the frontrunner for Opening Day duties at third. "I talked to Bill Hall today and told him we had a chance to get a player [who would affect Hall's role]," Melvin said. "Nothing had been done at that point, but being the guy that he his, he understood it. "Corey will play some third base and so will Billy. Will it be a total platoon? I don't know at this point. ... That will be Ned's to handle. As we get better as a team, we need to get as many good players as we can." Wolfe, 25, missed 2004 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and signed with the Brewers in May of last season. He was 5-2 with eight saves in the Brewers' Minor League chain and pitched in the Arizona Fall League. To make room for Koskie on the 40-man roster, the Brewers will need to designate a player for assignment on Monday.

Astros sign Trever Miller.HOUSTON - The Houston Astros announced today that the club has signed free-agent left-handed reliever Trever Miller to a one-year, $1.3-million contract. The deal includes a one-year vesting option. The announcement was made by General Manager Tim Purpura. The club also announced that it has signed left-handed pitcher Carlos Hernandez and catcher Alan Zinter to minor league contracts with invitations to Major League Spring Training. In addition, the Astros have invited minor league right-handed pitcher Jared Gothreaux to Major League Spring Training. Miller, 32, was 2-2 with a 4.06 ERA (20ER/44.1IP) in 61 games for Tampa Bay in 2005. The 61 appearances marked the second-highest total of his career, and he did not allow a run in his last eight outings of the season. He also spent the 2004 season with the Devil Rays and finished 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA (17ER/49IP) in 60 appearances, including one save. Miller pitched for the Astros from 1998-99, when he was a combined 5-2 with a 4.02 ERA (46ER/103IP) in 84 games over the two-season span, including two saves. In seven Major League seasons, including stints with Detroit (1996), Houston (1998-99), Philadelphia (2000), the Los Angeles Dodgers (2000), Toronto (2003), and Tampa Bay (2004-05), Miller is 10-11 with a 4.66 ERA (146ER/282IP) in 305 career appearances, including six saves. Hernandez, 25, was 5-8 with a 5.56 ERA (55ER/89IP) in 21 starts for Triple A Round Rock in 2005, including 66 strikeouts and 54 walks. He appeared in a combined 35 big league games (33 starts) for Astros over the 2001, 2002, and 2004 seasons, posting a 9-8 record with a 4.54 ERA (86ER/170.2IP). His last big league season was 2004, when he went 1-3 with a 6.43 ERA (30ER/42IP) in nine starts. Zinter, 37, has hit .167 (13x78) in 67 career big league games with Houston (2002) and Arizona (2004). He spent the last two seasons in the Arizona organization and hit .216 (24x111) with two home runs and 14 RBI in 47 games for Triple A Tucson in 2005. Zinter made his Major League debut with the Astros in 2002, which was his 14th professional season. He hit .136 (6x44) with two home runs and three RBI for Houston that season. His other Major League action was with the Diamondbacks in 2004, when he hit .206 (7x34) with one home run and six RBI. Gothreaux, who turns 26 on Jan. 27, was 3-8 with a 4.29 ERA (41ER/86IP) in 15 starts for Triple A Round Rock in 2005. He was a member of the Astros' 40-man roster in 2005 but was outrighted from the 40-man to the Express on Nov. 16, 2005.

Wow, is that really all they could get for the guy?Great deal for the O's. That's like getting a taste of goat cheese pizza on Saturday display day at the grocery store. If you like it, you can get more. If you don't like it, you've only had a little taste, and the soda display is in the next aisle.

This metaphor needs more explanation.

The Red Sox are now trying to swing a three way deal with OAK and LAD to get back Jay Payton while giving up David Wells.
Could Terry Francona have less of a say in personnel matters? It's almost embarassing.

How do you know the BOS Front Office didn't talk to Francona about it (assuming it's even true)?

HOPEFULLY they talked to francona and realized that they are both grown men and can chill.Payton liked Boston at first, but hated being a platoon guy. If he could get the starting gig I think he'd thrive in Fenway.

I'm sure they talked with Francona. I don't like the idea of bringing back a guy who essentially said, "I don't give a f*** about the team".

Mets sign Ramon Castro.Mets Agree to $800,000 Deal With CastroBy Associated Press NEW YORK -- Backup catcher Ramon Castro and the New York Mets agreed Tuesday to an $800,000, one-year contract. He hit .244 in 99 games last season with eight homers and 41 RBIs, getting more playing time than anticipated because Mike Piazza got hurt. Piazza became a free agent, and the Mets acquired Paul Lo Duca from Florida. Castro also has the chance to earn $50,000 bonuses for 60, 70 and 80 games played. Infielder Chris Woodward and pitcher Victor Zambrano are the only Mets remaining eligible for arbitration.

Payton admitted that he started a fight with Francona simply to facilitate a trade. Now I happen to agree with Payton that Francona didn't use him properly, but still, that's a pretty low move.I'm sure the FO did consult with Francona. But in no way can I imagine Francona actually having any meaningful input into the personnel decisions. Put it this way-I think Francona's opinion on a player is about 38th on the FO's list of concerns when deciding on acquiring a player. They know he will go along.

Message board rumor... normally I wouldnt even bother posting somthing like this, but this guy has SO much credibility that the phils board has absolutely exploded... he posted both the Milton and Wagner deals (along with exact specifics on salary AND the day and time of the press conference before it broke ANYWHERE)... he also broke several other Phils minor moves before they were posted anywhere else... anyway, here is the post...

Manny will be a PhillieI'm back. I had to come out of retirement to post this. This is basically a done deal with some minor issues to iron out. I would anticipate a press conference later this week. Abreu will be involved.
He did also suggest that a Nomar for Abreu was "close" a few years back and got absolutely slaughtered when it didnt happen. Take it FWIW. :o

No, I dont think it would be a straight one-for-one swap... Id guess the Phils give back prospect(s) (Gavin Floyd maybe?)... and the Sawx pass back some $$$ to help balance out the remainder of contracts?

I'm sure the FO will do whatever it wants and Francona will make do with what he's got. I just don't like the selfish attitude that Payton showed when he was in Boston. If it happened once, whats to say it wouldn't happen again over playing time, where he hits in the order, why he gets a day off, etc, etc, etc.

Well, one thing's for sure... when this guy talks, people listen. The thread has ballooned to 44 pages on the Phils board with lots of fans from SoSH weighing in. It has also garnered some attention from major media outlets...From ESPN...

Manny not going anywhere

Jan 10 - A Phillies source told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that the Manny Ramirez-for-Bobby Abreu rumor is "completely false." The source said there has been "absolutely no discussion" of that deal, even as part of a three-team scenario involving Miguel Tejada.

The Red Sox and Phillies did talk briefly about a deal built around those two early in the offseason. But it's not alive anymore. And the Phillies never discussed trading Abreu for Tejada and then moving Tejada to the Red Sox or Cubs. And a Cubs source confirmed they were never involved in any three-team discussions involving Tejada, with the Phillies or any other team.

Last week, Ramirez said he didn't think he would be traded anywhere. "There will be no trade, I'm staying in Boston, where I'm familiar with the system and where I have a lot of friends, especially David Ortiz," Ramirez told ESPNdeportes.com while in Miami on personal business.

Manny To Philly Rumor Looks False

This trade rumor has been lighting up forums across the Internet all day long: Manny Ramirez to the Phillies for Bobby Abreu. According to the rumor, it's "basically a done deal." I got in touch with my very best Phillies source for the scoop. According to my source:

"I checked it out with high-ranking sources as early as 4 p.m., then again at 7. Nothing is going on."
As of last night, the source was still claiming it was true...
the small issue is Boston eating part of Manny's contract. The Phils want 5 million per year, where the Sox want 3. This is the only delay in an announcement and both sides are optimistic in a posit... sometimes the smallest things happen at the last minute to kill a deal, like this money issue, but like i said, from what is happening over the past 24 hours, i would anticipate a press conference by the end of the week
I dont know if it has any legs or not, but its certainly generating a lot of discussion. It's really impossible to weigh in with an opinion with no idea of who/what is involved other than to say, Id love to get Manny, and Id hate to lose Abreu.

Well still no SS or CF but we do have a nice looking bullpen this year!
Please tell me you're joking. Julian Tavarez is not nice looking, neither in terms of his ability to pitch nor his facial features.
Not nice looking in a Brokeback Mountain way! but should be solid with holding leads from the 7th inning on. Mota, Timlin, Tavarez + Foulke is a quality bullpen in my book!

I think Bostonians will enjoy his psychotic nature on the mound in addition to the solid ERA he will provide. He'll get a good amount of holds for you.
As a friendly word of advice, I recommend that Boston install softer walls in the bullpen area, lockerroom and dugout should Tavarez ever become upset about his pitching performance.
Some Xanex might work, too.

Finally some names are being mentioned... another has said this could be announced tomorrow.
Bobby Abreu, Jason Michaels, and Rob Tejeda/Gavin Floyd to Boston

for

Manny Ramirez, Matt Clement, and Kelly Soppach/Andy Marte/Kevin Youkillis
Boston is also rumored to be sending some money the Phils way to help pay for the difference. No way do I see Boston including Marte in this deal.

Can Michaels play CF?? There is a little bit of talk about this on the SOSH message board but nobody there seems to be convinced of an impending deal.

Turns out the whole Manny/Abreu thing was a hoax. Someone hacked the previous "insiders" account and posted the rumor. So much for Innernet rumors. :hophead:

*cough* Dewon *cough cough* Brazelton *hack*Just kidding, Edwin was a nice coop for Baez, and Tiffany could turn to be a stud as well. All for the cost of one good and one "meh" reliever.

Nice to see the new D-Rays ownership thinking progressively.

"In Danys' case, it takes a player with his talents, character and accomplishments to create an opportunity to acquire such talented pitching prospects. There are no guarantees with young pitching. The more top prospects in our system, the greater our chances for developing impact players who will play key roles over the coming years."

In Jackson, the Rays get a 22-year-old premium prospect who they expect to be a key part of their rotation for years. Baseball America rated him the Dodgers' top prospect in 2004 and their third-best in 2005.

Jackson has pitched in 19 major-league games over parts of the past three seasons, compiling a 6-4 record and 5.50 ERA. In 2005 he was a combined 9-11 with a 5.91 ERA at Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A Las Vegas, and 2-2 with a 6.28 ERA in seven games for the Dodgers.

In Tiffany, the Rays get a 20-year-old left-hander who has compiled impressive minor-league numbers, including an 11-7 record, 3.93 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 110 innings in 2005 at Class A Vero Beach. Baseball America had him rated in the 12-15 range among Dodgers prospects
Nice to get Edwin.
Yeah, the Dodgers have kept the Jacksonville Suns loaded with talent the last couple of years. I think he must have struggled a little bit with Las Vegas since I thought his ERA was considerably lower here.

ST. PETERSBURG - The Devil Rays made their first major move of the offseason on Saturday, acquiring pitching prospects Edwin Jackson and Chuck Tiffany from the Dodgers for closer Danys Baez, middle reliever Lance Carter and a player to be named.

The trade allows the Rays to add depth to their starting pitching prospects but creates a hole at the back end of their bullpen.
