Baseball Off-Season Thread (1 Viewer)

Oasis did put out a good album and now I'm an ET believer. Before the season? Probably not. In July? If the A's are struggling? Probably. Stop being so funny.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Indians reached agreement Friday on a Jason Michaels-for-Arthur Rhodes trade, a deal that could trigger a bigger swap involving the Boston Red Sox.

Rhodes was in Philadelphia taking a physical, two people familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been finalized.

If the trade is completed, the Indians could turn around and send center fielder Coco Crisp to the Red Sox to fill the gap left when free agent Johnny Damon left for the New York Yankees.

Boston had been trying to send third base prospect Andy Marte and reliever Guillermo Mota to Cleveland.

Trades involving the three teams had a hitch earlier this week when the Indians got an unfavorable medical report on Mota. The righty reliever spent about a month on the disabled list with Florida last season because of elbow inflammation.

Rhodes went 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 47 games for the Indians last year. But the left-handed reliever missed most of the final two months for family reasons.

Michaels hit .304 with four homers and 31 RBIs for the Phillies. He platooned in center field with Kenny Lofton.

Michaels recently was put on six months' probation and ordered to complete 100 hours of community service following a fight with a Philadelphia police officer last year.

Crisp was a sparkplug and fan favorite for Cleveland, hitting .300 with 16 home runs, 69 RBIs, and stealing 15 bases.

Mota went 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA and two saves in 56 games last season with the Florida Marlins.

There was a chance Boston catching prospect Kelly Shoppach and Cleveland reliever David Riske, as well as backup catcher Josh Bard could be involved in a larger deal.

anxious? They got what can be argued as the #1 prospect, and a clear cut top 10 prospect, in all of baseball in retiurn

Brian Giles

Richie Sexson

Sean Casey

Coco Crisp

Seems the Indians have not learned from their mistakes.
If I'm not mistaken Milwaukee wanted Russell Branyan instead of Sexson, but Cleveland refused to make that trade, and insisted on Sexson.

Crisp just had a breakout season, and is a leadoff hitter. No doubt Marte should have a great future, but isn't Cleveland taking a step back, at least until Marte lives up to his billing ?

What is the Cleveland projected OF now along side Grady Sizemore ?

Not enough to compete with the White Sox in the CentralAnd really, does anything else matter if you're the Indians right now?

GO WHITE SOX!!!!!

Shoppach is a top 10 prospect in all of baseball?
to Red Sox fans
Rotoworld has Shoppach as the 8th best RED SOX prospect.Marte as a Top 10 prospect in all of baseball I can buy, but I don't think he's as highly regarded as Delmon Young, etc.

Baseball Prospectus had Marte as their #1 prospect last year behind "prospect" Joe Mauer.

I'll grant that it is a clumsily worded sentence, but I'm pretty sure Wilked meant that Marte is a clear cut top 10 prospect, possibly even the #1 overall. Nothing about Shoppach at all.But hey, don't let me get in the way of your tired, whiny Red Sox rants.

I would assume, if they don't make any more moves, it would have to be Jason Michaels and Casey Blake

Saw on my local news that the MN Twins signed Ruben Sierra to a minor league deal.Pack it up and start playing for 2nd place boys. This move should send the Twins right to the top!Ruben Sierra? What the...?Oddibe McDowell wasn't available? Why not Cecil Espy?

Aw crud...I was hoping he'd sign with a team that has spring training in the Cactus League...I'll be down there for a week this spring and I was hoping I'd get him to autograph his CD covers. If you're into the Salsa sound, his CD's are pretty good actually.

The LA Times has reported the Red Sox tried to deal Manny Ramirez to the Angels this week but the Angels apparently balked at Boston's asking price. According to the paper, Boston wanted Chone Figgins, starter Ervin Santana, and two or three of the Angels' top prospects with Boston not kicking in any $$$ for the remaining $57 million of Manny's contract.

Although I like Ruben Sierra, Torre would habitually overuse him.

Got a rumor emailed to me about the White Sox and Phillies talking again

Rumored deal is

Contreras / Dye

for

Abreu / Gavin Floyd

ESPN is reporting that the BoSox want Ervin Santana, Chone Figgins and two or three of the Angels' top four prospects in return for Manny, and the Angels would have to pick up the rest of his contract.

Doesn't that sound a little steep, considering nobody even claimed him off waivers last year?

I heard the same rumor, but in addition to the ridiculous asking price the Red Sox would not pay any part of the remaining $57 M on Ramirez contract. Needless to say, this deal won't happen.

Gammons said these rumors were false

Nice move. They could probably fetch something for Zaun as well.Is anyone having a worse off-season than the Angels?
Jays lineup looking pretty good now.1. Adams - SS

2. Catalanatto - LF

3. Overbay - 1B

4. Glaus - 3B

5. Wells - CF

6. Hillenbrand - DH

7. Molina - C

8. Hill - 2B

9. Rios - RF

and still Hinske, RJohnson and Zaun as decent players on the bench.

GM Kenny Williams actually put out a statement saying he hasn't spoken to the Phillies in the last 10 days....We'll see if anything comes from this one.

Can someone tell me why the Phillies are so set on getting rid of Abreu? I would think he is a player you would do what you could to keep.
Phillies fans will tell you that he is an overrated and soft player......of course they said the same thing about Scott Rolen.....

they also said the same thing about Mike Schmidt......

they liked Pete Incavigila though.....

Seems like a bargain for Molina. Angels seem to be asleep at the wheel.
Angels didn't offer Molina arbitration like 2 months ago. They didn't get outbid for him, it was a conscious effort to not re-sign him.

He did hit a ball through a wall once.

Yanks agree to 1-year $3.6M deal w/ Chacon and avoid arbitration.

HUGE bargain. Chacon is money.

16 wins (or more) in '06 if he stays healthy. I think he'll get to 17 wins or more.

Bostonb Globe reporting that hte Red Sox are going to make a major run to get Roger Clemens back to Boston.

Jeff Weaver signs one-year, $8.4 million contract with LA Angels

http://sports.iwon.com/news/02152006/v6006.html

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Right-hander Jeff Weaver and the Los Angeles Angels agreed Wednesday to an $8.4 million, one-year contract.

Weaver can earn an additional $600,000 in performance bonuses.

He went 14-11 with three complete games, two shutouts and a 4.22 ERA in 34 starts last season with the Dodgers. He was eighth in the NL in starts and innings (224) and sixth in complete games. He also had 157 strikeouts and 43 walks, a ratio of 3.65 that was eighth in the league.

He set career highs in wins, strikeouts and fewest walks, and tied his mark for starts.

Weaver also had a career-best six straight victories from July 22-Aug. 28 and pitched into the seventh inning in 18 consecutive starts from May 24-Aug. 28, another career high.

His younger brother, Jered, a former pitching star for Long Beach State, is a prospect in the Angels' organization.

The Angels cut loose two of their starters from last year, left-hander Jarrod Washburn and right-hander Paul Byrd.

Weaver has a 78-87 career record, with 13 complete games, five shutouts, two saves and a 4.44 ERA in 226 major league games, including 209 starts.

He pitched for the Tigers from 1999-2002, the New York Yankees from 2002-2003 and the Dodgers the past two seasons. He has appeared in the postseason twice, for the Yankees in 2002 and 2003, and the Dodgers in 2004.

shady, I'm not being a jerk, I just don't know the answer. When the Yankees got Weaver, they got him as a free agent, correct? Was he the best free agent that year or was he the middle of the road kind of FA that year.

Just wondering....

8 million is insane for Jeff Weaver.

 8mil

Really....didn't realize that. He came to NY and couldn't handle the pressure (a la Ed Whitson type?) And then got moved for Kevin Brown? Do I have that correct?

yup.but hey on the bright side, at least griffin had a terrific year last year and kevin brown proved he could handle the pressure of NY. :sarcasm:

I was doing some research, and I think I have a player in mind who seems very likely to outperform his ADP by a huge margin. The proverbial "SOD," if you will.

Here's a look at a few of his statistics. I'll let you look at these, and try to guess who it is.

Statistics per ESPN.com

OPS by Month

April.............. .651

May.............. .725

June............. .808

July............. .854

August........... .934

September...... 1.050
As you can see, his numbers steadily improved throughout the season, but there was a noticeable jump in the month of July/August. It was around that time that he stepped into the role of lead-off hitter, the same role which he will assume this year.
Statistics by Batting Order

Order.............AB.........R.............H......2B.....3B......HR.....RBI....B

.....HBP.....SO.....SB.....CS.....AVG....OBP..... SLG.........OPS

Batting #1.....114.....28..............44......6.....2.........6....15.......11....3....

....16.......0.......1..... .386..... .453..... .632..... 1.085
I calculated his total number of at-bats last year (434) divided by the number of games he played in (122) to find his average number of at-bats per game (3.55, roughly). His 114 at-bats in the lead-off spot, based on the figure above, work out to roughly 32 games played at that position in the batting order. The #1 player in my fantasy league averaged 3.1 fp/g at this position. This player's line of 28 runs, 44 hits, 6 doubles, 2 triples, 6 HRs, 15 RBI, 11 BB, 3 HBP, and 16 Ks works out to roughly 112 points in 32 games, or about 3.47 fp/g. I'll let you guys guess who it is first before I post the answer, but I found it interesting nonetheless considering this guy is generally falling well below the first 150 picks in most drafts.
